• The vision is to develop the world’s first continuously manufactured PV product on steel for building integrated applications.

• Dye sensitised solar cells work on a principle similar to photo-synthesis and are efficient under all sunlight conditions.

• Tata Steel has chosen as its partner Dyesol, who are a global leader in this field.

PV OfferingsTata Steel PV accelerator project

23

• A 3-year £10m project aims to deliver a product that can be made cost effectively and that will last the lifetime of a building.

• The project is ~50% funded by the Welsh Assembly and on 30th October 2008, Rhodri Morgan officially opened the new facility.

• Once the product is proven, the aim is to establish manufacturing at the Shotton site.

Recommendations for PV installations

• Ensure that the full structural implications have been calculated and allowed for in the design. For retrofit a full structural assessment should be carried out

• Ensure that the roof structure is non fragile and walkable to allow easy access during installation and maintenance of the PV system (importance of material gauge and load span tables)

• Specify a more durable coating, with an application specific

The importance of lighting

• Lighting typically accounts for 20% – 30% of all energy used in industrial and commercial buildings.

• For a medium sized warehouse, lighting control can reduce the carbon emissions by 19.7%.

• The logical approach to low-energy lighting design is:

• Define the lowest feasible design lighting level for the specified use.

35

• Define the lowest feasible design lighting level for the specified use.

• Make the best use of natural light, while not creating over-heating problems.

 Daytime operation – 10%

 24hr operation – 8-12%

• Install low-energy lighting and efficient control systems.

BREEAM - Background

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.

BREEAM provides clients, developers, designers and others with:

• market recognition for low environmental impact buildings

• assurance that best environmental practice is incorporated into a building

44

• inspiration to find innovative solutions that minimise the environmental impact

• a benchmark that is higher than regulation

• a tool to help reduce running costs, improve working and living environments

• a standard that demonstrates progress towards corporate and organisational environmental objectives
