  • Sustainable steelSteel is an essential material, intrinsic to ourway of life and to the products society willdemand in a sustainable future. Steel is amaterial that is used, not consumed. It isrecycled and used again, without any loss ofquality, time after time. At Tata Steel, we arecommitted to making the products societyneeds and to making them in the mostresponsible way possible.

This means, practically, that we commit to:

    • Producing steel products for the future.

    • Investing in sustainable steel-making.

    • Improving our existing processes.

    • Facilitating the recycling loop.

Our steel enables our customers to make safercars, more energy-efficient buildings andinfrastructure, easily-recoverable andrecyclable packaging and many otherproducts which help to move society towardsour vision of a sustainable future.

Because where it comes frommattersThere is no single answer to sustainabledevelopment – the sustainability of a buildingis instead determined by a combination offactors including initial design andconstruction, occupation and end of life.Whilst in a narrow definition of sustainabilityenvironmental factors dominate, as theindustry strives to build in a less impactful waythe onus is increasingly being put onmanufacturers to demonstrate responsiblesourcing of products used in construction.

At Tata Steel we take this responsibility veryseriously and have secured BES 6001Responsible Sourcing certification for ourColorcoat® products, the first pre-finished steelbusiness to do so. This reinforces ourcommitment to sustainability and to activelymanaging our impacts and contribution interms of inputs, manufacture and finishedproduct.

Awarded a ‘very good’ performance rating, thecertification is for Tata Steel’s entire Colorcoat®product range manufactured at our Shottonsite. With one assessment covering rawmaterials, manufacture, delivery, use, re-useand recyclability, the universal rating systemenables architects, specifiers and constructionprofessionals to meet sustainability targetsmore easily.

The independent endorsement reinforces ourcommitment to producing materials in asustainable manner and helps our customersto achieve the highest standards ofresponsible sourcing against schemes likeBREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes(CfSH).

Sustainable BuildingEnvelope CentreDemonstrating our commitment tosustainable construction, we are investing, together with the Low Carbon ResearchInstitute (LCRI) and Welsh AssemblyGovernment, £6 million to create a‘Sustainable Building Envelope Centre’(SBEC) at Shotton which will lead in thedevelopment of low carbon, low energytechnologies. This centre of excellence willaccelerate the development of low andzero carbon solutions for the builtenvironment using steel in combinationwith other materials.

  • An essential ingredient of thecladding system, pre-finished steelplays a major role in the aestheticsand durability of the buildingenvelope and as such needs carefulconsideration to ensure the rightproduct is chosen. Each Colorcoat®product is made up of a number oflayers which perform differentfunctions as shown in Figure 2.

Topcoat:The topcoat provides a protection barrier tothe external environment and the finalappearance. In terms of barrier protection, thethicker the coating the better. From theColorcoat® product range, Colorcoat HPS200Ultra® and Colorcoat® LG are the most robust. The UV resistance is dependant on the coatingtype. The paint system for Colorcoat Prisma®has excellent UV resistance, and achieves RUV4rating, the highest available, meaning it willretain its colour and gloss for longer thanlower performing coatings.

Backing coat:We use a high performance backing coat asstandard for all of our Colorcoat® productswhich also provides corrosion resistance. A double-sided product, where the samecoating is applied to the top and reverse sidesof the steel coil, should be used if extraprotection is required internally, such as inswimming pools and energy from wasteschemes.

Metallic coating:The metallic coating plays an integral role inthe corrosion protection of the building. Weuse two types of metallic coating in the UKnamely hot dip galvanising (HDG) with Zinc, and our unique Galvalloy® metallic coatingwhich is a special mix of 95 per cent Zinc and5 per cent Aluminium. Both provide sacrificialprotection but the HDG can leave cut edgesvulnerable to increased rates of corrosion inaggressive environments. The thicker the HDG,i.e. the higher coating weight, the moreprotection this offers. Galvalloy® offers a

combination of increased barrier andsacrificial protection, which both inhibits andslows the rate of corrosion in comparison withHDG which only has sacrificial protection.

Corrosion resistance:The rating of corrosion resistance is a functionof the whole coating system, and is a measureof the durability of the pre-finished steel. Our most resistant pre-finished steel isColorcoat HPS200 Ultra®, this has the leadingcorrosion resistance on the market and willlast the longest before requiring maintenancesuch as a costly repaint.

Guarantee:Our guarantees cover Colorcoat® productsagainst unexpected coating failure. What iscovered in each guarantee is dependent onthe product used.

The most comprehensive guarantee is theConfidex® Guarantee which covers theweatherside of Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® andColorcoat Prisma®. Its benefits include thelongest length of cover on the market, including cut edges, no requirement forinspection or maintenance to retain itsvalidity, and covers all rectification costsshould a failure occur.

Products not covered by the Confidex®Guarantee may be available with alternativeguarantees which are either project orapplication specific. Please contact theColorcoat Connection® helpline for moreinformation on +44 (0) 1244 892434.

  • ConfidexSustain®We focus on responsibly managing our impacts atShotton, where Colorcoat® products are manufacturedand aim to develop products and expertise to helpbuild better and more sustainable buildings. As such,we have set ourselves a challenging target to deliver a50 per cent reduction in Shotton’s CO2 emissions by2012, and are already on the way to achieving this. Interms of waste, we reduced site waste to landfill in2010 by 54 per cent, and we have worked to help thelocal council find an alternative to landfillinghousehold waste.

We are committed to go beyond mere compliance on environmentalissues, as demonstrated by our certification to BES 6001 for responsiblesourcing. And have been working over a number of years to makeColorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and Colorcoat Prisma® the most sustainablepre-finished steel products on the market in manufacture and in use.

The introduction of Confidex Sustain® supports this approach andfurther enhances their sustainability credentials. Importantly ConfidexSustain® will offset the impact from the entire building envelope systemrather than just one element such as the pre-finished steel.

  • What is Confidex Sustain®?Confidex Sustain® offers the firstCarbonNeutral® building envelope in theworld measuring and offsetting its impactfrom cradle to cradle i.e. manufacture throughto installation, use and end of life, re-use,recycling or disposal. This means for every 1kgof CO2 emitted by the pre-finished steelcladding, fixings and insulation, we will offset1kg in climate friendly projects overseas.

These have a social as well as environmentalbenefit and will see us investing in renewableenergy and energy efficiency projects invarious locations worldwide.

Building on the success of our Confidex®Guarantee, the first and most reliableconstruction product guarantee, ConfidexSustain® offers a zero carbon buildingenvelope system. It goes beyond consideringjust one element of the cladding system toassess and offset all parts including theinternal and external pre-finished steelcladding sheets, fixings and insulation.

Confidex Sustain® is available when Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® or Colorcoat Prisma®pre-finished steel is used for the external skinof the Colorcoat® assessed cladding system, and Colorcoat® PE 15 is used for the liningsheet.

Balance for the environmentUsing Life Cycle Assessment data for each partof the cladding system, we can accuratelyidentify how much gas, that contributes toglobal warming, has been emitted at eachstage of the process from manufacture andinstallation, to use and end of life, re-use,recycling or disposal. This will be balanced andoffset by proactively investing in climatefriendly projects which make use of renewablesources such as wind and solar and alsoimprove the efficiency with which energy isused.

Applying for Confidex Sustain®Once you have determined the best claddingsolution for your building. To benefit from theConfidex Sustain® zero carbon buildingenvelope, building projects will need to:

    • Ensure Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® and/orColorcoat Prisma® by Tata Steel arespecified for the exterior roof and/or walls.

    • Ensure Colorcoat® PE 15 by Tata Steel isspecified for the corresponding interiorroof and/or walls.

    • Use a Colorcoat® assessed cladding system.

Applications should be made at the start ofthe building project using the ConfidexSustain® registration form, Part 1 availableonline at www.colorcoat-online.com/sustain

This form gives us brief details that allows usto ensure that we have adequate carbonallowances available on building completion.Anyone in the supply chain can register, butmore commonly it is the system manufactureron the clients behalf.

Once the building envelope is complete, Part 2 of the online registration process mustbe completed. This includes details of thesystem, the size of the project and theColorcoat® product used so that the offsettingcan be calculated and undertaken. Again, thisform is available electronically on www.colorcoat-online.com/sustain

If any problems are experienced or you haveany questions regarding the form, pleasecontact the Colorcoat Connection® helplineon +44 (0) 1244 892434.

Following registration, the buildingowner/occupier will receive a ConfidexSustain® certificate with details of how muchcarbon has been offset.

  • Meeting BuildingRegulationsIt is important that buildingproducts are not only guaranteedfor their long-term performance, but that they are also consideredas part of regulation compliance, risk management and an overallsustainability strategy. Pre-finished steel cladding systemseasily meet fire and acousticperformance requirements, aresecure and give an energyefficient sustainable solution foryour building envelope.

Part L2 2010We have reviewed the 2010 Part L2regulations along with our supply chainpartners and modelled the effects of alteringbuilding envelope parameters such as air-tightness and U values for different buildingsizes/geometries. The outcomes are reportedin the Colorcoat® Technical Paper ‘The role ofthe building envelope in Part L 2010 compliance’.

The main points from this paper are:

    • Colorcoat® roof and wall cladding systemscan meet the Part L2 A “2010 NotionalBuilding” specification for new build, andthe Part L2 B ‘U’ value requirements forwork in existing buildings for new andretained roof and wall elements.

    • There are more cost effective solutionsthan using the 2010 Notional Buildingspecification for Part L compliance.

    • For larger buildings, improving the air-tightness, is the most cost effectiveapproach to reducing building heat losses.

    • All Tata Steel supply chain partners providebuilding details, which have beenthermally modelled and have beenindependently assessed.

Fire performanceWe have performed numerous fire tests on allColorcoat® products, and the cladding systemsthey are used for.

The results can be seen in the Colorcoat®Technical Paper: ‘Fire performance of pre-finished steel cladding systems’. The keypoints of this paper are summarised below.

Building systems that use Colorcoat® pre-finished steel products:

    • Meet the Building Regulation, ApprovedDocument B requirements for externalsurfaces, for all applications, when used aspart of a roof cladding system and/or wallcladding system.

    • Can be used in roofing systems to achievea Class AA, National Class, or B ROOF (t4),European Class.

Acoustic performanceNoise and its control are important aspectswhen designing the ideal environment.

The building envelope plays a key role in:

    • Keeping internal airborne noise in.• Keeping external airborne noise out.• Minimising rain impact noise inside the

    building.

    • Improving internal sound clarity.

Our research into the acoustic performance ofa number of different cladding systems hasconfirmed that Colorcoat® pre-finished steelcladding systems form the basis of acousticallyhigh-performing building envelopes.

The full results of the research can be found inthe Colorcoat® Technical Paper: ‘Acousticperformance of pre-finished steel claddingsystems’.

Gauge specificationThe gauge of the pre-finished steel coil orsheet plays a vital role in the physicalproperties and performance of the wall or roofcladding that is manufactured from it.Incorrect specification may, in the worst cases, have safety implications such as roof fragility. The European standard EN 10143:2006 definesthe tolerances for different grade, width andgauge material for normal and specialtolerance categories.

We are able to supply pre-finished steel tonormal and special tolerances according to EN 10143:2006, and tighter tolerances subjectto commercial agreement, to ensure that thecladding performs as designed.

Incorrectly specifying gauge or gaugetolerances can affect:

    • Structural performance, including in-useloads and purlin spacings as well as safetyimplications during construction andmaintenance.

    • A buildings visual appearance, lightergauge material is more prone to damageduring installation, and distortion of theprofile around fasteners due to slightmisalignment of the primary/secondarystructure.

More details are available in the Colorcoat®Technical Paper ‘The effect of gauge on pre-finished steel roof and wall claddingperformance.’ For full details of the Colorcoat®Technical Papers available please visit: www.colorcoat-online.com/technical
