    The Beginning

Parivartan was set up in 1997 by Shakil Ahmed , a human rights activist andlawyer who grew up in the slums and dedicated his life to championing the under privileged. To this day he still remains in the slums, choosing to stay connected tohis community.

Parivartan is currently running two centres within the Sangam Nagar Wadalaslums, providing a non-formal education to children who do not attend school dueto issues that surround social, political and gender discrimination.

In 1999 Shakil made a petition in the high court against the Government, requesting a public school be built within this area and won the case

Parviartan along with other organisations are currently awaiting the results of apetition filed against the Government on the neglect and lack of protection thatsurrounds the education of children from 0-6 yrs old

Labour and household work: When both parents are out earning, the older children are dropped from their school to look after their younger siblings.

Gender Discrimination : girls are grown up as little parents and told todiscontinue their study. The overall responsibility of household work then lies withthem whereas their brothers are allowed to continue with their studies.
