The Olympic Park in Stratford will unite the world this year hosting the Paralympics and Olympics, with more than 205 participating countries and over 10,500 competing athletes. London promises the greatest show on earth! The Year 10 Business Studies group decided to visit the park to find out more about the journey towards the Olympics: from the very start when the initial bid was put in to the very end of its completion. ‘The Hots’ Project’ in Hounslow are active participants in getting schools around the Borough more involved in Olympic and Paralympic events; they see this year as the ideal opportunity for all students and teachers to thrive during the stages of the games, making particular use of the event as it is based in the very heart of our capital. The Year 10s were given a full tour of the stadium where the students learned about the social, cultural, environmental and economic factors of the event. One student said: “I had no idea that the stadium was the most sustainable stadium we have ever had. I learned that it was seventy-five percent lighter than originally planned”. Another student said “When we got there it was really interesting, because if you looked closely the village, the aquatics centre and the park looked like an island. There was a lot of greenery and the stadium was massive. it holds 80,000 people!” The group then designed their own stadium presenting it at briefing in The Gallery to conclude the day. Since 1965 the 8th March, has been declared as International Women’s Day. In 2010 the women of Rwanda and the Congo joined together the bridge connecting their two countries; the idea was to build a bridge of peace and hope for the future. Additionally it aimed to accelerate economic empowerment of women in Rwanda, to bring an end to violence against women and girls and to promote women in education. Since then this has become a global movement and there are ‘meet on the bridge’ events throughout the world on International Women’s Day.

This inspired 6th formers to organise a chain of students holding hands during second break. Miss Mills said “it was fantastic to see students joining together to celebrate International Women’s Day and acknowledge that there is still work to be done for equality”

‘It was really good to draw attention to International Women’s Day and it was great that the students responded so positively’, said Jonida Tafilakn who initiated the event.

ACHiEVERTurning a life Around

Georgina has made positive changes to her life and is now seeing the benefits. ‘I used to go out and hang around on the streets’, she said. ‘It only got me into trouble with the police. I realised that the people I hung around with were not going to help me in my life.’ Georgina made a decision to stay at home most evenings and go to Cobbs Hall, a youth scheme in Hammersmith instead. Through this scheme, Georgina has gained a qualification in Hair and Beauty in the holidays. She was then chosen to take part in a first aid course which she passed with flying colours. ‘I am really proud of my achievement’, says Georgina. Her decision to refocus her life has also benefited her in school. Now her attendance is up to 97%. She is following a Health and Social care course and has achieved distinctions in all her units to date and is predicted distinctions for those she has yet to complete. Her grades in other subjects like Maths and English are also improving. ‘I want to work with children’, Georgina said. ‘I am now working hard to achieve my goal.’ Georgina has clearly turned a corner and is a good role model for students who have been in trouble on the street. ‘You can make the right choices,’ she concluded.

Mr Southgate Year 10 CSO said, ‘I am really proud of how she has battled hard against the odds to make a success of herself.’ We wish her all the best in the future.

Georgina Newman, Year 10

Year 9 experienced their first WEX factor last Tuesday. The day, the first of three, is designed to introduce Year 9 to the qualities employers require at work and get them thinking about their own careers. The whole year group produced their own CV which they will be able to use later to apply for work experience or part time work. The year group dressed for work in a business rather than in school uniform.

The day started with a surprise assembly delivered by a visiting theatre company about what employers are looking for in an employee and how to behave at an interview. After the fireworks had finished students went to classrooms to think about different careers and the skills and qualities they had as young people.

After break, it was off to an ICT suite to put together their own CV and further research their careers. Some excellent work was produced.

The day finished with a game called Communication Stations in which the year group were asked to think about the importance of various types of communication at work. The next WEX factor day will take place in May when Year 9 will visit Chiswick Business Park and interview a range of people in different kinds of work. Samya Abdul Aziz and Zakariye Abdi Ali won best dressed girl and boy prizes.

‘It was a fantastic day for the year group’, said Ms Pilbrow, Year 9 Learning Coordinator. ‘They all looked really smart, worked hard and enjoyed the day’.
