I am always so thankful for many things at Bishop Montgomery, most of all our wonderful students, but there is so much more for which I am thankful. They are always too numerous to name! I do, however, want to thank those of you who completed the online evaluation of the school. We appreciate the time and effort you invested in this process which helps us to continue to evaluate and improve. And thanks, too, to all of you who contributed to the Queen of Angels Fund. I am so very grateful. St. Paul says it best, “I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers.”

I hope that you’ll continue to pray for our seniors and their parents as they await decisions from colleges during the months of March and April. The Class of 2016 is nearing the end of their journey here at Bishop Montgomery and we are so proud of them.

Congratulations to Daniel Muncherian and Tamaya Devereaux who have been chosen as our Christian Service Award representatives to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. They will be honored and receive their medals at a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jose Gomez on Wednesday, March 16th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Finally, my prayer for all of you is that the liturgical season of Lent continues to be a deeply prayerful time spent in preparation and anticipation of Holy Week. During Holy Week we prepare and anticipate the Risen Christ who is the source of our life and our salvation. How miraculous that the story of Jesus Christ does not end with the Crucifixion, but is fulfilled in the glory of the Resurrection and that through His sacrifice we can become transformed, become new in Christ. It is important to remember that we are not transformed alone but in community. As I so often remind the students, we strive for sanctity together, we participate in that

search for God with others, we share that desire to be transformed. And so I share the following meditation by Cardinal Newman with you which speaks so clearly about what it means to be transformed by God’s grace. It is one of my favorite meditations.

Re-registration will take place on Friday, April 14th. Re-registration Day is a mandatory school day for all students grades 9-11. Counselors will be visiting classes during the month of March to review registration materials and assist with planning courses for the 2016-2017 school year. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Seniors:

As I mentioned last month, many local organizations are now publishing and distributing their scholarship applications. Those students who have attained high academic marks and are involved in the school and the community are strongly encouraged to apply for these grant awards. Also, the FAFSA must be submitted or postmarked no later than March 2nd. We have submitted GPA verifications electronically to the California Student Aid Commission. If we have your student’s social security number on file, the verification has been received. Hopefully, both you and your child have applied for and received a pin number to be used as the electronic signature for the FAFSA if you will be submitting online.

Student Drop-off and Pick-up: Thank you for your cooperation with the Student Drop-off and Pick-up procedures. The Traffic Division of the Torrance Police Department and Bishop Montgomery HS appreciate your efforts in keeping our students and our community safe. Please continue to pick-up and drop-off your student at the pick-up and drop-off zone located in the east parking lot adjacent to the school. *****STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP PROCEDURES*****

Drop-off Procedures Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd.

1. Parents driving west on Torrance Blvd., who are making a left turn, can come into the campus.2. Parents may not make a left turn into the East Parking Lot.3. Parents must drive onto the campus and continue driving until they have arrived to the designated drop-off

point located in the East Parking Lot.4. Drop-offs are prohibited in front of the school. Parents must drop-off students in the designated passenger

must proceed to enter the East Parking Lot in order to drop-off their students in the designated drop-off points. Students may not be dropped-off on Torrance Blvd.

Please note that U-turns are not permitted. The only legal place to make a U-turn is on Torrance Blvd. and Prospect.

Exiting the East Parking Lot1. All drivers exiting the East Parking Lot must make a right turn only. Cars may not proceed onto the street until

they have stopped at the stop sign.2. Please do not merge to make a left on Henrietta, as attempting to do so will cause

a delay for the other parents who are attempting to exit.

Picking-up and Dropping-off Off-Campus:All drivers should pick-up and drop-off their students on-campus. To avoid the last minute rush, we encourage you to arrive before 7:30AM. The traffic flow on Torrance Blvd. is heavier after this time and may affect how quickly you are able to exit the campus. If you decide to pick-up or drop-off your students anywhere else, please refrain from picking up or dropping off your students at our neighboring businesses or residential driveways as this creates an inconvenience for our neighbors. Please respect the property of our neighbors by refraining from moving trashcans, taking property, littering, or parking or pulling into our neighbors’ driveways. Also, please make sure to drop-off your students in areas that are safe and legal. We have received many reports that there have been BMHS parents or carpools driving recklessly on Palos Verdes Boulevard and students are being dropped-off by their parents/carpool drivers illegally by the red curb zones, in front of fire hydrants or in the middle of the street. In the interest of the safety of all pedestrians and drivers and as a courtesy to our neighbors, students should be dropped-off on campus. Students whose parents fail to comply with the pick-up and drop-off procedures will be dealt with on campus. The Torrance Police Department has also been contacted and they have informed us that they will be citing drivers along Torrance Boulevard, Henrietta and Palos Verdes Boulevard. It is essential to give our neighbors the same respect and courtesy that we expect from each other on campus.


Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to obey all traffic and pedestrian laws. Many students are crossing the street when the signal light is red or are not using the appropriate crosswalks. We have received phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. Please remind them to follow all traffic and pedestrian laws.

Jackets: Have we forgotten? The ONLY logo jackets acceptable to wear during the school day are official BMHS jackets or BMHS athletic team jackets. Students wearing logo jackets or jackets with graphics and emblems that are not affiliated with Bishop Montgomery High School or a BMHS athletic team will be receiving violations/detentions.

Sweatshirts: BMHS sweatshirts are the ONLY sweatshirts that are allowed. They DO NOT SHRINK, please purchase a size appropriate for your student. During the 2nd Semester, Seniors are allowed to wear a non-hooded college sweatshirt of the college they will be attending.

Prom Time. Prom is just around the corner. As per the Parent-Student Handbook pg. 22, “The school does not permit the renting of hotel rooms or other facilities for students’ use for activities pre- or post- Bishop Montgomery dances. The school does not assume responsibility or liability for damages, loss of property, or injury caused when such rental agreements are incurred by students or their parents.”

Prom Dance: Remember that your student must fill out the Prom Bid when bringing a non-BMHS student to the dance. The Guest Pass must be signed by the Discipline Office & turned in to the Bookstore by the deadline. The bid must also include a signature from the dean of the student’s school along with a stamp of the school seal. The Deans reserve the right to refuse any non-BMHS student from attending the Prom. All students and their guests are required to bring and show a picture ID card from their school. YOU are responsible for the behavior of your student’s guest.

Prom Dress Attire. The dance is formal.

Dress Code for Prom

Please adhere to the following dress code for Prom, and do not assume any liberties with these guidelines when you, or an invited guest, purchase dress attire for the event. All BMHS and non-BMHS guests are required to conform to these guidelines. Anyone not adhering to the guidelines WILL NOT be permitted to enter the dance, and will be sent home. If you are asked to leave Prom, the bid money will not be refunded, and may result in disciplinary action from the Deans. BMHS reserves the right to refuse admittance to any person not properly attired.

Gentlemen-Required to wear tuxes or suits.Ties are required unless dress shirts with a mandarin collar are worn. Dress shoes are required.MAY NOT WEAR earrings, sunglasses, hats, gloves, nor may they carry canes.

Revised as of 9/9/15Ladies-May wear two pairs of earrings in the lower lobe, but may not wear sunglasses.The length of the dress should be in accordance with the stated uniform dress code guidelines for skirts and shorts, as stated on page 32 of the BMHS Student Handbook. The dress material must be solid material throughout. Fitted dresses may not be excessively tight. Dresses should be comfortable for dancing and sitting. Neither backless nor strapless dresses are permitted. The back of the dress may not fall below mid-back. Dresses may not show a bare midriff or contain cutouts, which expose the torso (front or back). Ladies are reminded that the display of excessive cleavage is inappropriate and unbecoming.


Just a reminder that the hotel requires that shoes remain on at all times while on the premises. Students attire should be appropriate, modest, and in good taste.

Lastly, in the interest of our students’ safety, we also would like for you to remind your children to pay attention while either walking home or waiting for their rides. We have received numerous phone calls from parents, faculty, and residents concerned over our students’ safety. We have heard reports of students being distracted while listening to their mobile device, texting while walking or waiting, and not paying attention to their surroundings. Please remind all students to be aware of their surroundings and be conscious to what is going on around them.

We have also been informed by our school resource officer that as of January 1st, 2014, a law went into effect prohibiting underage drivers from using any mobile device while driving. This includes all hands-free and Bluetooth devices. Please remind your children to adhere to all traffic laws when driving.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR 2016-2017The deadline to apply for financial assistance for the 2016-2017-school year was January 14, 2016. Anyone applying after January 14th will be placed on a wait list to be considered if and when funds are available.All tuition accounts must be paid in full at the end of this school year in order to be considered for financial assistance in the 2016-2017 school year.

DELINQUENT ACCOUNTSSENIORS:All senior accounts must be current by March 1st, 2016 in order for your student(s) to purchase a Prom Bid which goes on sale March 8th, 2016.All accounts must be paid in full by May 1, 2016 in order for your student(s) to sit for Final Exams beginning on May 18th, 2016.ALL OTHER CLASSES:All Accounts must be paid in full by May 1st, 2016 in order for your student(s) to sit for Final Exams beginning on June 6th, 2016.

Winter Spirit Week/Catholic Schools WeekThe Bishop community celebrated Winter Spirit Week during Catholic Schools Week, February 1st – 5th, and it included some fun activities for the week. Winter varsity athletic teams were recognized, and we were entertained by the jazz band, color guard and spirit squads, as they kicked off the week with a lunchtime performance. The juniors were welcomed as upper classmen at the Junior Ring Mass and Blessing, and students were invited to showed their class spirit on class color day. One of the highlights of the week was watching BMHS faculty work behind the counter at the third annual “McTeachers Night” at McDonald’s, which was sponsored by the senior class. Lunchapalooza on Thursday showcased lip sync performances and music on the Lower Field. The week wrapped up with Black and Gold Day on Friday and the ever-popular student vs. teacher volleyball match. Thanks to everyone for their spirited participation! National Honor Society Induction CeremonyThe National Honor Society honors students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. We held our fourth induction ceremony on February 16th, and are happy to announce that we inducted 32 10th-12th graders into our chapter. Congratulations to these students on this wonderful achievement. More information about the National Honor Society can be found on the website under “Academics.”

HOBY Conference RepresentativesThe Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership Conference is a three-day conference for high school sophomores. The sophomores that attend HOBY are specially selected because of their leadership abilities and roles. Approximately 180 sophomores from all around Southern California will attend the conference this summer.

The goals of the conference are:• To seek out, recognize, and develop leadership potential• To encourage and assist students in their quest for self-development and self-identification• To introduce potential leaders to today’s recognized leaders• To explore America’s incentive system, the democratic process and community service

Applications for 2016-2017 ASB and Class OfficersThis is an important time as students select their student government leaders for the next school year. Student government provides an excellent opportunity for students to hone leadership skills and take an active role in their school community. Please encourage your students to run for an office and get more involved in their school next year.


ASB OFFICERS: Applications were distributed on Wednesday, February 3rd in the Activities Office. Elections for ASB Officers will take place electronically from Tuesday, February 23rd through Thursday, February 25th. Students will be able to access the ballot from their BMHS Gmail account from their own devices.

CLASS OFFICERS: If your student is interested in running for class office, they should attend a mandatory informational meeting on Wednesday, March 9th. Application packets will be distributed only at this meeting and will be due on Tuesday, March 15th.

Blood Drive with Providence Little Company of Mary HospitalKey Club will sponsor our annual blood drive on campus Wednesday, February 24th. This is a great way for our students, faculty and parents to help support important needs in our local community. Parents interested in donating can call the Activities Office for more information. Thanks to all the students, faculty and parents who participate this year.

Senior ShowcaseThe Senior Showcase was held on Thursday, February 19th. This event is always a little bittersweet, as it’s the last opportunity for our talented seniors to share their talents with the BMHS community. Great job to all our performers!

Club Proposals for 2016-2017Bishop’s active club program continues to be a great way for students to become more involved at student life. Club proposals for next school-year will be accepted this spring. If students are interested in proposing a new club, they must attend the lunch meeting on Tuesday, March 1st in the Activities Office. Students are responsible for defining the purpose and goals of the club, recruiting a faculty moderator, and should be prepared to use this as an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. They should be committed to making this a priority. Approval for all 2016-2017 clubs will be finalized by the end of March. Further details on dates and deadlines will be given in morning announcements.

Spirit Squad, Band, and Color Guard Applications for 2016-2017Is your student interested in trying out for the one of these groups? If so, they must attend the appropriate informational meeting, and pick up an application. Both new and returning members are required to attend the appropriate meeting. Students should listen to announcements for details and dates.

Spring Spirit WeekPlanning is underway for Spring Spirit Week March 14th – 18th. We look forward to honoring our spring varsity athletes, and will have more opportunities for students to show their school spirit at Class Color Day, and Black & Gold Day. Highlights of this week will include the Battle of the Bands during lunch, and Friday night’s Sadie Hawkins Dance. Students should listen to announcements for more details. Show your spirit, Knights! Bishop AmbassadorsBishop Ambassadors is a leadership organization that promotes student involvement in marketing our school to prospective families. Bishop Ambassadors are actively involved in Back to School Night, Open House, HSPT Testing Day, Freshman Registration, Feeder School Visits and Shadow Days. Applications will be distributed this spring for 2016-2017. Interested students should listen to announcements for more details on application dates and deadlines.

Senior ActitvitiesSpecific information regarding senior events, including Senior Luau, Prom, Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation, is sent home in a detailed letter the beginning of March. Watch for your letter and contact the Activities Office if you do not receive one. Please pay special attention to dates and deadlines so that you do not miss out on these important senior activities.

There are many upcoming activities this spring for all Knights! Please encourage your students to participate in these upcoming events. Their involvement in these activities makes for great high school experiences and wonderful memories for years to come!

Bishop Montgomery was well-represented in the the 52nd Annual West Torrance Lions All-Star Football Game on Saturday, January 30. The Blue Team, coached by BMHS’ Ed Hodgkiss and his staff, beat the Red Team 6-0 in a defensive battle. The only score came in the second quarter on a four yard run by BMHS quarterbackBrendan Marafino ‘16, who was one of three BMHS seniors to play in the game for the Blue Team. Late in the 4th quarter, Patrick Smith ‘16 broke up a 3rd down pass that would have given the Red Team a first down. A few minutes later, Dominic Johnson ‘16 had one of the key plays of the game. On 4th down at their own 28 yard line, the Blue Team ran a fake punt with Johnson carrying the ball 12 yards for the first down to put the game away.

Boys Basketball finished the regular season with another Del Rey championship going undefeated in League play. The boys will move onto the Open Division Championship then State Playoffs.

The Spring Athletic Season is set to begin. Track, Boys Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Swimming and Boys Golf will begin their regular seasons. Be sure to come out and support our student athletes.

“Knight Music” Booster Club The “Knight Music” Booster Club represents the Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Music Production, Video Production, and Music Ministry. Their meetings are usually on the same Monday nights as Athletic Booster Club and Mother’s Club, at 6:00 pm in room 318 – additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Please join them to help keep the many proj-ects they organize rolling.

We’re always practicing, planning, and organizing, including school concerts, local performances, competitions, pa-rades, tours, and lots of other important things – come on in any day before or after school, 6:30 am - 3:30pm (although we’re often there earlier and later.) ASB Elections: This year students will vote for their ASB council members through an online form. Tuesday February 23rd, “@student-bmhs-la.org” Gmail accounts will be emailed a link to the ballot. Each freshman, sophomore, and junior is allowed to cast one ballot. Thursday, February 25th at 3PM voting will close, and results will be announced by the end of the day on Monday, February 29th. Don’t forget to click submit at the bottom of your ballot. Good luck to all candidates! Freshman Computer Competency Examination: Incoming freshman are invited to participate in the BMHS Computer Competency Examination. The examination will take place April 12th from 2:30PM to 3:30PM. The Computer Competency Examination consists of multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and one performance based task. Students should be prepared to demonstrate knowledge and ability in topics such as, but not limited to: basic operation of technology, Google Apps proficiency, computer etiquette and student responsibilities, document formatting, and hardware identification. The fee for each exam is $25 and must be submitted with the appropriate registration form on registration day. We will not accept any late testing registration forms. If a student is unable to participate in the examination on April 12th, they will be provided an opportunity to take the Computer Competency Examination in future years.

GRADUATION 2016

UPDATE: This year, all seniors will receive NINE tickets to the graduation ceremony on Friday, May 27. Graduation for the Class of 2016 will be at Bishop Montgomery in Knight Stadium. Admission to the ceremony will be by ticket only—every person attending the ceremony, regardless of age, must present a ticket. The tickets will be distributed at graduation practice in May. WELCOME TO THE 2015-2016 BMHS Booster Club. The BMHS Booster Club is designed to provide support for all BMHS athletic programs. This is a great opportunity to consider joining the BMHS Booster Club. Membership is open to all BMHS families, not just those with student-athletes!! Members of the Booster Club volunteer their time at many athletic functions and provide support to the Athletic Director, Coaches, and Student-Athletes. Whether you are a NEW Bishop parent or a returning seasoned BMHS parent please plan on attending our monthly meetings. Please join us for the March meeting on Monday, March 21st and the April meeting on April 18th. Both meetings @ 6:30 BMHS Library.

Damion Mendoza Scholarship- Due April 2016The Mendoza Scholarship is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete 2015/2016 school year grade 9-11. Those wishing to apply must submit a 1 page essay on "What it means to be a student-athlete at Bishop Montgomery." Participation on a BMHS athletic team is mandatory to be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship amount is equal to (1) month Catholic tuition for the 2016/2017 school year. The scholarship is named in memory of former BMHS student Damion Mendoza, who passed away while in high school. He would have graduated in the Class of 1994.
