This issue of PPaarrttnneerrss begins what we hope willbe a tradition, a chance to thank all those whogive of their time and resources to provide guidedogs for people who are blind or visuallyimpaired.

“Every charitable organization says they lovetheir volunteers and supporters,” GDA PresidentJay Bormann says. “But GDA is really different.Maybe it’s because we provide a service that costsover $38,000 per team, and we do it without anygovernment support.

“Our mission wouldn’t be possible without thesefriends. It’s really that simple. Everyone saysthat, but for GDA, it’s really true.

“We want to make sure our supporters and volun-teers know how much they mean to us and howmuch we appreciate them. That’s why we arestarting this new tradition of dedicating an issueof PPaarrttnneerrss to saying ‘THANKS!’”

On the following pages, you’ll see lists of manynames. But these are not just any names. To us,they are a PPaarraaddee ooff PPaarrttnneerrss – generous friendswho are making life better for people who livewithout sight.

The people who are honored here are just asmuch a part of the GDA family as our staff andour dogs. Together, we bring safety, indepen-dence, mobility and companionship to peoplewho are blind or visually impaired.

If it were possible to take a vote of “favorite peo-ple” among our dogs, there’s no doubt thatFlorence Mast would be the candidate to beat.For 20 years, Florence has come to GDA everySaturday to give dogs staying at our kennel a littleattention and care. Florence’s unique ability tocomfort and amuse our dogs is proven by the factthat years later, even older dogs turn into helpless-ly wagging puppies in her presence.

When Florence retired in 1985 at the age of 64,after being widowed twice, she was determinedto start a new life, not simply sit around thinkingabout the past. “I moved to a senior center, but Ijust couldn’t see sitting around watching televisionand playing Bingo all day. I wanted to DO some-thing. So when I saw an ad from what was thenInternational Guiding Eyes, I thought it was justfor me. I had always had dogs, but I couldn’t haveone in my small apartment, so I would go to GDAonce a week to get my fix of dogs.”

Florence has also been a steady and regular volun-teer for the Burbank Retired Senior Volunteer

Program, helpingout in local hospi-tals, libraries andnursing homes.

Sadly for GDA,the need to care for her ailing 91 year old auntand 73 year old cousin, coupled with theincreasing strain of making the trip to and fromGDA means that Florence has been forced toend her amazing stint of volunteering for GDA.

“I have always been active, but those dogs, theytired me out. It was good for me. Volunteering forGDA was very rewarding. I went to nearly everygraduation for 20 years because I wanted to see theend result. It was wonderful.”

At a special party in her honor in August, everyoneat GDA expressed their enormous gratitude to ourmost dedicated volunteer. We will miss her terri-bly. But it’s a safe bet that those who will miss hermost are her four-legged friends who gained somuch from her tender loving care over the years.

the funds for breeding and delivery, as well as GDA’s expenses of raising a puppy to the point at which it is

ready for formal training. Puppy Sponsors recieve regular updates on their sponsored dog’s progress.

GDA PUPPY RAISERS

The process of turning an eight week old puppy into a well-socialized

and trainable young dog of 16-18 months is crucial to developing great guide dogs. Our Puppy Raisers share

their homes, their lives, and enormous amounts of their time with our guide-dogs-to-be. And they accept the pain

of giving up a dog they have grown to love. For all those reasons, our great thanks go to all our dedicated Puppy Raisers!

A Day for Everyday HeroesIt is fitting that our first PPaarraaddee ooff PPaarrttnneerrss issue follows closeon the heels of our most successful Open House on June 11th.The theme of this year’s Open House was “GDA HonorsEveryday Heroes.” And so many of the names listed in thisissue of Partners truly fall into that special category.

The Open House was a great day for remembering all thosewho with courage and generosity live heroically every day.Almost 1,000 people joined us for a fun and inspiring familyevent that included our famous puppy trials, guide dogdemonstrations, and a very successful silent auction.

Two raffle events proved to be the highlights of the day. Firstwas a raffle of a Harley Davidson motorcycle donated by Chetand Merlene Diercks, owners of the Eagle Rider of Las Vegas.The thrilled winners were Eric and Martha Ayala of centralcoast, CA. Eric is a member of the International Association ofMachinists and Aerospace Workers.

The other raffle that generated great excitement was our “A DayWith a Trainer” prize. Kandace Delgado and Nancy Bensonspent a full day working with our trainers and future guide dogs.Past winners have hailed this as a life-changing day and we hopeKandace and Nancy agree.

All in all, the Open House was a great day to celebrate some amazingguide dogs – who are themselves everyday heroes. And the food wasfabulous!

For a gift of $2,500 or more, you cansponsor one litter of future guide dogs (GDA’s

choice). Your generous dona-tion covers the breeding anddelivery expenses of the litter.You’ll receive a special certifi-cate and a photo of the motherand puppies.

Newborn Sponsor

For a gift of $1,000 or more, you cansponsor an individual puppy (GDA’s choice). Yourgift covers the cost of breeding and delivery of aguide dog puppy. You’ll receive a special certificateand a photo of the puppy you are helping.
