  • S I N O P S I S

Hernán, a middle-aged geologist working at a public investi-gation center, arrives with a group of strangers to an isolated hotel resort in the Delta area of Tigre, a labyrinth of small islands surrounded by streams and rivers. Amongst house-wives and professionals, Hernán is part of a middle-class community that has left their comfortable lives of suburban Buenos Aires. Together, they train, following strict guidelines for what seems to be the impending arrival of the end of the world.

    D I R E C TO R ’ S N OT E

In the last few years, the unease over the forthcoming end of the world came to resonate progressively stronger in the media, perhaps as a result of the devastating effects of global contemporary capitalism, yet at the same time, as a new prod-uct of consumption.

Facing this situation, it is not hard to think that the aim of a community to reconnect with nature or to isolate themselves in the countryside to prepare for the end of the world, is also understood as a touristic alternative that allows a customer to escape from their demoralising routine in the city.

In Parabellum, a group of people consent to receive grueling survival training in the forest, as if it were an extreme sport whose core is danger. In this isolated context, violence takes on a natural functionality that allows for exploring the possi-bilities of man as a predator and to approach one’s attraction for danger without prejudice.

These characters can finally part from the humanist discourse and explore the limits that they themselves are capable of do-ing. Parabellum examines this transformation, looking to take the ideals and aspirations of a global culture to an extreme: a power that goes beyond any state authority and the absolute “freedom” of individuals.

  • Lukas Valenta Rinner (Salzburg, 1985) studied film direction at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. In 2012 he founded the Argentinian and Aus-trian based production company Nabis Filmgroup, striving to establish a link be-tween the two countries in order to produce and distribute Latin-american arthouse productions. The projects of Nabis have received the support of festivals and institutions such as the BAL, Berlinale Script station, San Sebastian, Typa, Iber-media, World Cineema Fund among others. Parabellum is his first feature film.
