PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT THE 104TH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE VICTORIAN OLYMPIC COUNCIL (VOC) AT OUR ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING IN 2016, A SUMMER GAMES YEAR. The VOC thanks Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM for accepting the role of Patron in Chief of the VOC and we look forward to working with the Governor’s office to promote the Olympic principles throughout Victoria. I would like to acknowledge VOC Board Member, David Wansbrough OAM, who was a recipient of a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to hockey as an elite player and to sports administration, a well-deserved honour. As President, I acknowledge the 2014 Julius L. Patching Sports Official of the Year recipient, Mr Bill Mildenhall (Basketball). I also extend my sincere thanks to all of our constituent bodies for nominating their highly valued volunteers for this award, the interest in which is growing each year which is great to see. In 2015 we saw a lot of administrative work for the Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner and I am extremely grateful to the PMOD Executive Team and Chairman David Thodey who resigned from Telstra but did not miss a beat in the continued work of raising funds for the Rio 2016 Australian Olympic Team.

David and his team are committed to achieving our aim in exceeding the 2012 result of $2.2m. We are also extremely grateful to the State Government of Victoria for their ongoing support of the Olympic Movement via its $575,000 contribution to the Team Appeal, but also through their financial support of our educational programs including the Active Youth Development Program which was completed in 2015.

The Julius Patching Foundation continues to support the VOC in its break-even imperative and I thank Peter Halstead, James Tomkins OAM and my fellow Board member and sub-committee chair David Wansbrough OAM for their outstanding guidance and work on the investment portfolio. Once again Leon Wiegard OAM and the Olympians Club of Victoria (OCV) Committee delivered a successful dinner held at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins with more than 500 guests attending. It was pleasing to note that 11 of our State Sporting Organisations were in attendance that evening. This dinner is now a feature on the Australian sporting calendar as a must-be-at event. Well done to the Committee and all involved. Special thanks are extended to the staff of the VOC, Warwick Waters and Maria Cabeliza, who help myself and my fellow Board members maintain the high professional standards of the VOC across all of our activities and various interactions. I thank the Australian Olympic Committee for their ongoing support of the VOC and our Executive. I also acknowledge and thank the Education Commission, so well led by Luke Soulos, our many volunteers and Victorian Olympians for their commitment to the Olympic Movement and the activities and programs delivered by the VOC in 2015. Finally, I have every confidence that our athletes will justify our support of them in the lead up to Rio and wish them every success at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

THIS YEAR I HAVE INTRODUCED A NEW LOOK TO OUR ANNUAL REPORT WITH AN AIM TO REFLECT OUR ACTIVITIES AGAINST OUR STRATEGIC PLAN. THE REPORT IS SET OUT TO REFLECT THE FIVE PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS OF THE VICTORIAN OLYMPIC COUNCIL STRATEGIC PLAN 2013-16.

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution the Councils’ Board members make to the smooth operations of the VOC which is led in a very professional manner by the President Nick Green OAM, who continues to bring the outstanding qualities of an Olympic Gold Medallist to his role as VOC President. The day to day operation of the Council is a true partnership between directors and staff.

Both Maria and I along with the VOC Board recognise the ongoing contribution of the AOC’s James Edwards who works closely with the VOC to ensure we have an aligned vision and more importantly outcomes. James’ contribution has been embraced by the VOC given his energetic, positive and enthusiastic approach. I personally would like to thank Fiona de Jong AOC CEO, for the ongoing support and encouragement of our activities in representing the AOC here in Victoria.

We continue to provide administrative and secretarial support to the OCV with the highlight being delivery of the OCV annual dinner.

President Leon Wiegard OAM provides unparalleled energy and commitment to the Olympians Club. Leon once again provided a strong and passionate vision for the 2015 OCV Annual Dinner. This year we welcomed a significant number of State Sporting Associations and also sort three levels of sponsorship.

We thank the staff at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins for their efforts in supporting this annual event, particularly Director of Conferences and Events Sharon Bretz and her team for their generous assistance to the OCV.

Finally, I would like to thank the Olympians Club of Victoria (OCV) Committee led by Leon Wiegard OAM, OCV Forum members and our wonderful team of volunteers, all of whom regularly demonstrate their passion for the Olympic Movement in the many activities they undertake.

OPERATIONAL REPORTS

KEY RESULT AREA 1 FUNDRAISINGTHE AOC HAS ASSIGNED US THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RAISING $2.2 MILLION FOR THE 2016 AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM.

I am pleased to report that preparations for the 2016 Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner are well on track and 2015 has seen us making sure the event exceeds all expectations both in delivering the highest of quality event, but importantly exceeding our fundraising target for the Australian Team.

The Victorian Olympic Council has committed to raise $2.2million towards costs associated with the preparation of the 2016 Australian Olympic Team, the majority of which will be raised by the PMOD.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to each member of the Executive for their continued support in the lead up to this prestigious

celebration, the single most significant fundraising event to prepare the Australian Olympic Team for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

We look forward to welcoming corporate Australia on this journey, the Road to Rio.

OUR OLYMPIC VOLUNTEERS

The Annual Dinner held at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins was another great success. With 2015 being a non-games year we took the opportunity to look forward to Rio 2016. We had a number of new partner’s, along with 11 State Sporting Associations join us on the evening which all played a part, be it the supply of product or services or additional items for our auction. We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the great support provided by our Gold Partner QV Sports, (who provided each guest with a wonderful gift on the night) and the generous support of all our sponsors who have been an integral part in making the night such a great success.

We opened the night with a welcome to country which acknowledged the traditional owners of the land and provided a great start to the night. For those who attended they would know I could not be there due to prior commitments, but I did make an appearance by video to provide the loyal toast. It was pleasing to be able to hear from Kitty Chiller, Chef de Mission Rio 2016, along with Andrew Hoy OAM, Belinda Hocking and Carol Cook AM who all aim to compete in Rio in 2016.

A special thank you to our Gold Partner QV Sports and Bronze Partners, Involve Group, John Dryden Media, IMG Sports Technology Group along with Hamper World. Without their support we would not be able to continue to offer Olympians a subsidised cost to attend this event.

Some of the highlights of the night included the Victorian Governments confirmation of the $575,000 to support athletes representing Australia at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Minister for Sport , the Hon John Eren MP acknowledged the Victorian Governments funding at the dinner.

We also recognised a number of “Olympic Family” achievements from the past 12 months including; former Australian Hockey Team Member and recently retired Olympians Club of Victoria Committee member David Wansbrough OAM, for his service to the Olympians club.

A highlight of the evening was the overwhelming support for the 1956 Athlete pledge, we received just on fifty pledges within 90 seconds. The Olympians Club of Victoria thanks all of those who offered this kind offer and look forward to attracting as many of the 1956 Olympians we can to the 2016 dinner to celebrate their 60th anniversary.

On behalf on the OCV I would like to acknowledge the support provided by the Victorian Olympic Council team in helping the club deliver an outstanding event each year.

Finally, we are indebted to the ongoing support of people and organisations that supply auction and raffle items on the night and assist in meeting our break-even imperative:

Special thanks to our volunteers on the night, Kate Thomas, Sahil Dewan, Alex a’Beckett, Megan Burns and Jennifer White.

[ACTIVITY ONE: ACTIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM]

The Active Youth Development Program (AYDP) is delivered by the Victorian Olympic Council (VOC) and funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria.

The program aims to:

– Connect Olympians with the community to inspire participation in sport

– Connect schools and students with local clubs to foster an ongoing relationship

– Empower teachers with the tools needed to conduct the program with minimal support from the Victorian Olympic Council

– Increase participation in sport.

Students are given a unique insight into the Olympic Games as Olympians share stories about how they became involved in sport and the positive impact of sport on their lives.

Each one-day program delivers a range of sports. The 2015 program included the following sports across the four programs basketball, volleyball, athletics, table tennis, badminton, swimming, gymnastics, soccer, hockey and rugby. VOC enlists the support of Olympians to coach and inspire the students.

Every student had the opportunity to be coached in their preferred sport by an Olympian, coming away with a special tip from an Olympian that they will cherish for life. In the afternoon, Olympians combine with local clubs to run a “Come and Try” session to showcase their sport and the club.

The 2015 rollout of the AYDP saw the VOC partner with Regional Sport Assemblies and Regional Sports Academies along with Local Governments to expand the partnerships which have been traditionally used to deliver these programs.

We would like to acknowledge Mornington Secondary College, Valley Sports & Greater Shepparton City Council, Barwon Regional Sports Academy, Montpellier Primary School and Sports Focus for their support in the lead up and on the day of the programs.

In 2015, programs were delivered at four host schools/local venues including, Mornington Secondary College, Montpellier Primary School, Shepparton Sports Stadium and St. Liborious Primary School.

The programs reached 1,115 students, 37 Teachers, 18 Local Sporting Clubs or Associations and involved 30 plus Olympians and Paralympians. Key outcomes from the program evaluation showed; – Overall over 80% of the students strongly agreed

that they enjoyed the program in which they attended.

– 95% of students thought the clinic was a lot of fun.

– 82% of students advised that they had learnt more about their local sport opportunities because of the program.

– 76% of students would like to continue playing the sport played in the morning’s coaching clinic.

[ACTIVITY TWO: PIERRE DE COUBERTIN AWARDS AND OLYMPIC ACADEMY]

JUNE 21, 2015 - 111 senior secondary school students, of a total 162 Victorian recipients, were honoured in a special awards ceremony on Sunday June 21 at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The awards are funded by the Department of Education & Training and delivered by the Victorian Olympic Council.

Named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games, the Pierre de Coubertin Award recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the Olympic values.

Each award recipient must participate in sport and display the Olympic values, in particular good sportsmanship. As part of the nomination each student must submit a literary or artistic piece to this year’s theme: Participation in sport is a core value of the Olympic Games, share one or more Olympic moments that epitomises this for you. The winner of the Most Outstanding Artistic piece was Kitana Campbell-Heremaia from Melton Secondary College (pictured below) and the winner of the Most Outstanding Literary Piece was Tiarnie Ellingworth from Camberwell Girls Grammar School.

A further 45 school sport leaders participated in an Olympic Academy preceding the awards ceremony. The academy allowed Pierre de Coubertin recipients and sport leaders the opportunity to interact with Olympians, learn about the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the A.S.P.I.R.E Olympic values, as well as tour the Victorian Institute of Sport, Victoria’s Olympic Training Centre.
