Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored ?

Management in the Future Internet is not ignored, but rethink

The FI is no longer a service agnostic transport network, but a service cooperating (federated) with other services

Orchestration of these services to fulfill business objectives is a must

Here is where management, understood in wide sense, plays its role

Page 3: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

Which are the limitations of the current Internet to face mean term and future expectations ?

Page 4: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

Limitation: Lack of user’s mobility experience

•  Requirements –  Cooperation and mobility of networks

•  Trends –  Look for more advanced (self)management systems

•  Challenges –  Scalability, security (trust)

Limitation: The network is unaware of the services it supports

•  Requirement –  Future Internet Services support

•  Trends –  Service-driven, business-driven network management

•  Challenges –  Refinement of service goals into network configuration

Limitation: Disconnection between Internet governing policies at different levels

•  Requirement –  Deployment of consistent policies

•  Trends –  Extend the policy-based management paradigm to work with the

concept of a “continuum of policies” (interrelated policies)

Limitation: Interaction between different domains is predetermined or requires tedious manual

negotiations •  Requirement

–  Service coalition supporting mechanisms •  Trends

–  Allow and define dynamic negotiation processes and mechanisms between domains (Interdomain Management)

•  Challenges –  Efficient and robust algorithms needed

Page 8: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

… and last but not least

Lack of protection against intentional attacks (DDoS, trojans, etc)

Lack of protection against non-intentional attacks (misconfigurations)

Page 9: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

… we rely on the Internet and we expect more and more

Innovation and Investment, particularly in management, is necessary

•  The question is: –  is the road smooth and clear?

or

–  are there threads which might jeopardize the impact of this innovation?

Page 10: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

Threads

•  Trying to cater for current and future requirements of the Internet may lead to: –  A proliferation of coexisting incompatible protocol stacks –  Deployment of a plethora of ad-hoc solutions to control E2E QoS in mobile

ubiquitous environments –  Emergence of independent sources trying to control the network (like the

applications themselves) –  Deployment of more and more policies without the appropriate mechanisms

to have a clear view of the consequences and impact on all the affected resources and supported services

–  Allowing for complex mechanisms between parties involved in service offering

•  The attempt to address the ever increasing number of requirements causes the network to become too complex to be properly managed resulting in unpredictable behavior or even collapse

Page 11: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

Conclusion

•  A New Internet is necessary to tackle the above challenges –  In particular: an Internet laying on Autonomic Communications

principles with embedded self-management capabilities

Page 12: Panel: Why is Managing the Future Internet Being Ignored

Conclusion

•  A New Internet is necessary to tackle the above challenges

•  But –  A careful planning and design, likely holistic, is required to avoid

a counter effect
