CHRISTMAS EVE CANTATA

“A Celebration of Carols” A Lessons and Carols Service by Joseph Martin

A Word from the Composer

With the hearing of winter’s first treasured song, we are gradually gathered from the noise of our daily enterprise and drawn into the hopeful sounds of Christmas. With great expectation we begin to decorate with the sights and songs of this blessed season and prepare our hearts for the warming candle of Christ’s birth. With reverence we take from the closets of our heart the special memories of Christmases past and place them thoughtfully in our homes like sacred relics. Our places of worship reverberate with the time-honored carols of our faith and we remember that we are loved.

As the choir presents this “celebration of carols,” may you be reminded of Christ’s mercy and grace. As you hear the timeless story, may you grasp hope with all of your heart and experience the rich abundance that is the true gift of the season. May joy and peace surround you as you sing!

Let Christmas begin! Joseph Martin, Composer “A Celebration of Carols” Pre-Service Music Welcome and Announcements Prelude “A Christmas Overture”

(Senior Choir)

Bidding Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Candle Lighting Service During the Sharing of the Light to the Congregation, the ushers will give light to the first person in each pew. Pass the light to the person next to you. (Please hold the lit candle upright and tip the unlit candle to receive the light. Tipping a lit candle will result in spilled hot wax.) When the sanctuary lights are turned on after the benediction, please extinguish your individual candle. The person nearest to the center aisle may pick up the decorated can under the pew. The last person in the pew may then place the can on the floor beneath the pew.

Sharing the Light Christmas Blessing Hymn “Silent Night! Holy Night!” 1st verse: English; 2nd verse: German

Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright

‘round yon virgin mother and Child, holy infant so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Stille Nacht! Heilege Nacht! Alles schlaft, einsam wacht

Nur das traute, hochheilige Paar holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, schlaf in himmlisher Ruh, schlaf in himmlisher Ruh!

As one of the four Special Mission Offerings of the UCC, congregations have the opportunity to reach out in kindheartedness to those who have faithfully served the Church and are now facing unexpected financial needs. These gifts enable the United Church Board for Ministerial Assistance to provide, on behalf of the whole Church, Supplementation of Small Annuities, Retiree Health Premium Supplementation, Emergency Grants, and Christmas “Thank You” Gifts to those in need. This year’s Theme is The Light Is Surely Coming, and your support will help continue these ministries of light and love. The recipients of these gifts have faithfully served the church and now, in their time of need, we can be the church to them. We invite and encourage you to join thousands of UCC members and congregations who will support this year’s appeal and trust the light is surely coming.
