On M onday, 11/14/16, ten Paladin students were accepted into and began a six week boxing experiential learning course at the Uppercut Boxing gym in N ortheast M inneapolis. The training is one hour per week with Uppercut donating the gym space to Paladin. Attending staff are M aria (a former boxer) and Deonne, mother- in- law to our private trainer, M arlon Batres y Carr.

M arlon is a boxer, manages Uppercut, and is a personal trainer. He loves working with teens and is giving our school a huge fee discount so that our learners can participate. He himself attended a school much like Paladin, is Salvadorian, and was a child war refugee who found himself homeless and living out of a car at age 15. N ow 28, he is in his senior year of college, married to Deonne's daughter, and has plans for a M asters Degree and a School Administrator's license.

So far we've learned six stances (positions and punches), have been in gloves from the very first day, and have been working a combination of air punches, punches against our trainer, punches against the punching bags, jogging while punching the bags, and strength-training (calisthenics, etc.) - this after only two trainings. Paladin hopes to offer a second six-week session with a new crew of student boxers again this spring. Stay tuned!

UPPERCUT BOXING

In N ovember, we had six students attend the M AAP STAR S Fall Leadership Conference at Camp R ipley. Fardowso Abdi, Alexander Brueske, Sam Chapman, Carl Fisher, Deeqa Jama and Destynee M orris acquired knowledge of how to become better leaders in our community. They attended lectures and activities led by various people to help them realize what being a leader is all about. Carl Fisher was nominated by our school to run for a M AAP State Officer. He was elected by the students who attended the conference to be a representative.

He will be representing our school as a State Officer for this school year. We are very proud of all the students who attended and are excited for the year to come. M AAP STAR S is eagerly preparing for the Spring Conference in April.

AJAX MANUFACTURING

Paladin participated in M N M anufacturing Day by touring Ajax M anufacturing plant in Fridley. Ajax showed us many aspects of manufacturing careers and then treated us to lunch at Broadway Pizza!

CONSTRUCT TOMORROW

Construct Tomorrow is a hands-on career exploration day that allows students to try different trades such as construction, welding, concrete, window installation, etc. Paladin students were able to talk to people in trades and get their hands dirty in the process.

NEWGATE

N ewgate is the dream training program of several Paladin students. It's hands-on learning in a very small environment and there is no cost!  Students need to be 19 and have a high school diploma.  This is an excellent technical training program for students who love to work on cars.  Stop by the CCC to learn more.

During the first quarter of this school year, our students finalized 24 books and earned 2.5 credits. What a fantastic start to the school year!

This quarter, Paladin READS is getting in the holiday spirit! Every book that students finalize will be rewarded with their choice of a gift card from the grab bag, or a FREE book from H alf Price Books!

'Tis the Season to earn credit for reading!

Complete the Paladin READS Finalization Form on the Start Learning page when you have completed a book and stop in to see Gabby or Caitlin every day during 5th hour in the Sunset Room.

H appy Holidays, Readers!

PA LA DIN PRESS ? DEC 2016 ? JA N 2017

In the month of December, Paladin students will be examining the meaning and value of such virtues as Curiosity, Charity, Loyalty, and Joyfulness. By focusing on these character traits, Paladin students will continue to cultivate a positive, supportive school climate where academic success can flourish. It is through a culture of mindful excellence that we hope to equip and empower these leaders of tomorrow.

As an additional incentive to encourage students to do their best, there will be an end-of-year field tr ip to Valleyfair that is exclusive to those students who have earned Court of Honor membership during three or more months of this school year. All students should work toward this goal!

The following students should be particularly proud of themselves, as they have earned Court of Honor membership and open lunch access for the month of December:
