Blue Christmas Service Sunday 14th December 9.30am St. Augustine’s Church, Kirkby in ClevelandFor all who are bereaved or find Advent & Christmas difficult due to family circumstances- all welcome. We will be sending invitations to families who have had funerals recently & please invite anyone you know who is bereaved or finds Advent & Christmas difficult for any reason.

Presents Round the Christmas Tree:Following the tradition of previous years we are inviting children to place a gift of a toy – perhaps one they no longer need but is in good condition – under the Christmas Tree in church on Christmas Eve. The parcel should have a label indicating ‘girl’ or ‘boy’ and appropriate age. We will ensure the gifts go to a charity that helps needy children.

BlanketsIn previous years we have been very grateful for donations of knitted blankets, hats & scarves. Last year the articles donated were delivered to the Yorkshire Aid Convoy based in Leeds ([email protected]) who took them out to Romania in their next convoy. We would like to be able to support Yorkshire Aid again this year and would welcomeany donations of knitted items or good quality bedding. If anyone can help please contact Sheila Hayton (712321).

Christmas Boxes For The SeafarersOnce again it is time for the Christmas Boxes for the Seafarers coming into Teesport over Christmas and New Year. If you would like to give again this year your gifts will be very much appreciated – warm socks, hats, gloves, mens toiletries and chocolate in shoe boxes please. Please bring your boxes to Church before December 22nd, or to Pat Weighell, Dromonby Hall Farm, Busby Lane, Kirkby. Tel: 01642 712312 .

Christmas Quiz 2014Round the Benefice -How well do you know the churches?

There are four questions - the answers are the four churches in our Benefice

1. Verbum factum caro est. Which church has a window with this inscription? (an extra point if you can identify the Bible verse –often used at Christmas)

2. Which church has the festival of its patronal saint on November 19th?

3. John 10:11 Which church has a window depicting this verse?

4. Revelation 22:13 Which church has a window depicting this verse?

Tie breaker:

In which year did the Benefice of Ingleby Greenhow, Kildale, Bilsdale Priory and Kirkby in Cleveland formally begin?

Please e-mail your entries to [email protected] or leave them in the boxes in the four churches or send them to Revd Dr Anne Heading 3 Holmemead Great Broughton TS9 7HQ by Sunday 11th January 2015. Prizes for the first two correct entries pulled from the bag.

Kirkby & Gt. Broughton School To keep in touch with what's happening in school our website address is www.kirkbyandgreatbroughtonschool.ik.org

Our children & their families have shown great generosity recently with events in support of a range of charities. We joined with other local schools for the ‘Love in a Box’ Children in Distress Shoebox Appeal & were overwhelmed with the number of boxes received which are now on their way to Romania where they will make a real difference to children’s lives. We also took part in ‘Children in Need’ on 16th Nov, when the children came to school dressed as their favourite superhero. The School Council organised a very successful ‘Bake and Buy’ Sale at playtime and after school & our fantastic PTA organised a Firework Extravaganza on 8th

November. A great deal of planning and hard work went into making the event a successful & enjoyable night despite the rather blustery conditions! The next event is the Holly Fayre, which will be held in the school hall on Sat 29th Nov. This will be a lovely opportunity for Christmas shopping in relaxed surroundings with a range of festive activities, refreshments and good Christmas cheer for all the family! These events are not only hugely enjoyable but provide a significant boost and much needed financial support for the school for which we are very grateful. We recently held a Book Fair in school giving the children opportunity to browse through and purchase good quality books. The support for the Book Fair has enabled us to buy a good number of new books for school benefitting all the children. Our preparation for Christmas begins with our Christingle Service in church on Mon 1st Dec at 2pm. Our Infants Nativity Play takes place on Mon 15th Dec at 2pm and on Tues 16th Dec at 5.30pm The children’s Carol Service is at St Augustine’s Church Thurs 18th Dec 11.00am Everyone is welcome. Merry Christmas & a Peaceful New Year from us all at Kirkby and Gt Broughton Sch.

Kirkby & Gt Broughton NurseryThe children at Kirkby and Great Broughton Nursery are looking forward to performing The Nativity and Christmas songs in front of their parents on the 16 th . We also have our party with a special visitor coming in a red suit to finish a very exciting busy term.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone X

Stokesley and District Choral Society ‘A Festival of Christmas Music’ on Sat 13th Dec, 7pm, Stokesley Parish Church. Members of the choral society will be joined by ‘The Christmas Strings’ & the Roseberry School choir. Tickets £10, U18s £4 (includes wine/soft drink & mince pie) 701237 Bob Baker (Chair SDCS) 2015 Gardening Event For three years gardeners in our two villages have supported a 'Garden Day' in the Village Hall. It has enabled people to exchange ideas, share plants, pass on redundant tools &at the same time raise money for our Village Hall. It has been very successful and great fun. Now we are looking for a new team to run the event. This doesn't mean we won't contribute, but we feel the day would benefit from new ideas. If anyone, or any group, would like to discuss taking over, please contact Sarah Grierson at [email protected].

Great Broughton Methodist ChapelWill hold it's final service on Sun 4th Jan at 3pm before closing it's doors for the last time. The service will be lead by Revd Ruth Gee, the Chair of District. It is to be a great celebration of all that has been done in Christ's service by the generations of faithful whohave worshiped and served from Great Broughton Methodist Chapel. An aging & dwindling congregation made it nonviable to remain open despite the active

and socially generous attempts of several members. Recent initiatives such as the Lantern Parade, Duck race, Traidcraft

shop and Centenary Exhibition were all initiated bymembers of Chapel.Rev Catherine Hutton, speaking in the StokesleyCircuit Plan honoured the faith and service ofworshipers. She highlighted active involvement of theYouth Movement, the Sunday School, Mums andToddler group, Youth Club, Harvest celebrations & charity fund raising as memorable and exemplary activities. She said that alongside the inevitable sadness will be a whisper

of Love, Peace and Hope saying 'Well done good and faithful servants.'The Memorial Window to the right of the entrance from the street will be handed into safe keeping. (below)

The iconic Art Nouveau stained glass windows can beseen above but not in wonderful colour, so do go along tothe final service for a long last look!Kirkby, Great Broughton & Ingleby Greenhow LocalHistory Group explored Great Broughton villagersinclination toward nonconformism, enabling at one time, four separate Chapels to flourish- the Methodist Chapelbeing the final one, but sadly soon no more! Chapel hastouched & influenced many of our lives & will be missed.

…......................watch out for details of a possible sale of Chapel artefacts towards the end of January.
