(AP) Two Americans jailed in Iran as spies were released from
Tehrans prison on Wednesday after more than two years in
custody.Associated Press reporters saw a convoy of vehicles with
Swiss and Omani diplomats leaving Evin prison Wednesday afternoon
with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal inside, heading to an airport in
the capital Tehran. Switzerland represents American interests in
Iran because the U.S. has no diplomatic relations with Tehran and
the prisoners are expected to be flown to Oman now.The two men,
both 29, were driven out of the prison compound just minutes after
their Iranian attorney, Masoud Shafiei, said he has completed the
paperwork for their release.I have finished the job that I had to
do as their lawyer, Shafiei said. He obtained signatures of two
judges on a bail-for-freedom deal. A $1 million bail $500,000 for
each one was posted. The two men were arrested along the Iran-Iraq
border in July 2009 and sentenced last month to eight years each in
prison. A third American arrested with them, Sarah Shourd, was
freed last year on bail.
Iran releases two Americans jailed as spies
(Reuters) - Irans nuclear energy chief accused British spies on
Monday of shadowing him around the world -- even to the back door
of his university office -- to gather information ahead of a failed
assassination attempt on him last year.Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani,
subject to U.N. sanctions because of what Western officials said
was his involvement in suspected atomic arms research, also blamed
Israel and the United States for attacks on him and other Iranian
scientists.Western countries have previously dismissed allegations
of this nature from the Islamic Republic, which they suspect of
seeking to develop a nuclear
weapons capability. The Foreign Office in London declined to
comment on the allegations.Abbasi-Davanis comments on the sidelines
of the annual member state gathering of the U.N. nuclear agency in
Vienna underlined steadily deteriorating ties between Iran and the
West in the row over Tehrans nuclear work. They also made clear the
limits of a charm offensive which Western officials say Iran has
been waging in recent months in an attempt to ease tightening
international pressure.Six years ago the intelligence service of
the UK began collecting information and data regarding my past, my
family,
the number of children, Abbasi-Davani told a news conference. The
agents of MI6 of England in different and various places including
the airport in France, in scientific places in Poland, Italy,
Netherlands, Malaysia ... repeatedly following and looking for
information regarding myself. They had even checked until the back
door of my room in the university to see whether I have a bodyguard
or not, Abbasi-Davani added through an interpreter. In July,
university lecturer Darioush Rezaie was shot dead by gunmen in
eastern Tehran, the third murder of a scientist since 2009. One was
killed in

(AFP) The United States is considering setting up a direct
military hotline with Iran after a series of close encounters
between US and Iranian forces in the Gulf, a defense official said
Monday.Fearing that a misunderstanding could lead to wider
conflict, US officials are weighing establishing emergency
communications but a final decision is still pending, said the
defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. This idea has
been circulating for a while in some places, but its just that at
this point: an idea. No such proposal has been reviewed by the
secretary of defense, the official told AFP.The Wall Street Journal
first reported on the possible hotline, saying the United States
was
especially concerned about a fleet of speedboats that often
challenge US and allied warships that transit the Persian Gulf. The
high-performance Iranian vessels are likely controlled by the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Tehrans elite military force,
and can be equipped with missiles. In recent months, a British
destroyer fired warning shots at one of these boats as it appeared
to be preparing to ram the larger ship, according to The
Journal.Iranian aircraft have also challenged US ships, the paper
said.At least initially, defense officials are interested in
expanding navy-to-navy contacts with Iran to prevent
miscalculations, The Journal
said. But the military remains wary of any direct engagement with
the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, due to its deep ties to
Middle East militant groups that Washington has designated as
terrorist organizations, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in
the Palestinian territories. It remained unclear if the hotline
proposal has been informally raised with Iran, possibly through
Iraq, The Journal said.Irans president and foreign minister will be
in New York this week to attend the annual UN General Assembly
meeting. The Pentagon said that US forces would safeguard American
interests and allies in the region.
We continue to be concerned about Irans destabilizing activities
and ambitions, and we remain firmly committed to protecting our
personnel, our interests, and our partners in the region, press
secretary George Little said.We have consistently conveyed to Iran
that it must halt its destabilizing behavior and avoid any
provocations in the Gulf, Iraq, or elsewhere.
US considers emergency hotline with Iran
The London-based rights group Amnesty International called the
release of the Americans a long overdue step.Iranian authorities
have finally seen sense and have agreed to release Shane Bauer and
Josh Fattal, said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Amnesty International
Deputy Director for Middle East and North Africa. They must now be
allowed to leave Iran promptly to be reunited with their
families. The three Americans friends from their days at the
University of California at Berkeley have maintained their
innocence and denied the espionage charges against them.Their
families and the U.S. government said they were just hiking in
northern Iraqs scenic and relatively peaceful Kurdish
region when they may have accidentally strayed over the unmarked
border with Iran. The last direct contact family members had with
Bauer and Fattal was in May 2010 when their mothers were permitted
a short visit in Tehran. It was not clear where the two men will be
reunited with their families after their release.Phone messages
left for Fattals mother and brother in Philadelphia were not
immediately returned Wednesday.Since her release last year, Shourd
has lived in Oakland, Calif. Bauer, a freelance journalist, grew up
in Onamia, Minn., and Fattal, an environmental activist, is from
suburban Philadelphia.Bauer proposed marriage to Shourd while in
prison.
CTV News- Premier Christy Clark is adding small business tax
incentives to her plan to boost jobs in B.C.Clark says she is
adding $3 million to the governments $30-million small business
venture capital tax credit to attract investors to support new
businesses.Shes also extending the $31-million apprenticeship tax
credit program for another three years until 2014 to give employers
more opportunities to hire and train skilled workers.Clark says
shes asked Finance Minister Kevin Falcon to lead a review of
the
provinces tax system to make recommendations to ensure British
Columbia has a system that better supports job creation and
innovation. The premier, who has been unveiling her jobs plan in
stages this week during a provincewide tour, will release her
entire strategy Thursday at a Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon. So
far, Clark says she wants to expand the Port of Prince Rupert,
support liquefied natural gas exports from Kitimat and double the
numbers of international students in B.C. in the next four
years.
Clark targets small businesses with tax incentives
a car bomb, the second by a device detonated remotely.
NO NEED FOR NORTH KOREA COOPERATION
Iran has said the attacks were the work of enemies that wished
to deny it the right to develop nuclear technology which it says is
aimed at generating electricity.Himself slightly wounded in a 2010
car bomb blast, Abbasi-Davani said the attacks were carried out by
Israel with the support of the intelligence services of the United
States and England. A nuclear scientist, he was named to his
current post a few months later.Washington has denied any
involvement in the murders and arch foe Israel has declined to
comment.Iran has repeatedly rejected Western accusations that its
nuclear programme is a cover for developing atomic arms, but its
refusal to curb sensitive activity has drawn increasingly tough
United Nations and separate U.S. and European sanctions.Western
powers have voiced particular alarm over Irans decision to shift
higher-grade uranium enrichment to an underground bunker near the
holy city of Qom, as such work could take it closer to
weapons-grade material.Abbasi-Davani said the activity, which Iran
says is intended to produce fuel for a research reactor, was moved
to protect the nuclear programme against any Israeli and U.S.
strikes. He said equipment was being transferred to Fordow and that
the facility would be inaugurated within six months.Asked whether
Iran had any nuclear cooperation with North Korea, Abbasi-Davani
said his country had so far not had any need for that. But he did
not rule it out in future, saying any such cooperation would be
under IAEA supervision.Western nuclear experts say both North
Korea, which has carried out two nuclear tests, and Iran could
benefit from exchanging nuclear know-how, material or technology,
as sanctions make it difficult for them to access other
sources.
The Vancouver Sun- The B.C. government is honour-bound to repay
the $1.6 billion it received from the federal government to bring
in the Harmonized Sales Tax, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told the
House of Commons Tuesday. He was responding to a demand from New
Democratic Party deputy leader Libby Davies that the Harper
government drop its plan to punish British Columbians who voted in
a summer referendum to axe the combined federal-provincial sales
tax.Flaherty said he spoke Monday with B.C. Finance Minister Kevin
Falcon about a coordinated exit strategy leading to the separation
of the federal Goods and Services Tax and the provincial sales
tax.He noted that both governments signed an agreement to usher in
the new tax in 2010, and that pact included conditions
surrounding Ottawas payment of $1.6 billion to B.C. to assist in
the transition to the new tax.The agreement has provisions with
respect to the repayment of the sum that was advanced by the
government of Canada, Flaherty said during question period. That sum
was advanced as part of the agreement to proceed with the HST.
Theyre not proceeding with that now, so it follows that honouring
the agreement will require repayment.Davies (Vancouver East) said
the money has already been invested in family-friendly programs
like health care and education.Forcing the province to pay it back
will hurt very important services and create a hole in the
provinces budget, she said. Will they drop plans to punish British
Columbians for rejecting their HST?
B.C. honour-bound to repay $1.6 billion to Canada for HST,
Flaherty says
The Province- Canadians consume, on average, the equivalent of
26 teaspoons of sugar a day, according to a report from Statistics
Canada released Wednesday. That amounts to 110 grams a day and
accounts for 21.4 per cent of Canadians overall calorie intake. The
total includes sugar that occurs naturally in food such as milk and
fruit, as well as sugar that is added, the latter of which tends to
be less nutritious.A little more than one-third 35 per cent of
Canadians sugar intake was from foods outside the categories of
grains, fruits and vegetables, meat
products and milk products. This other food category, which
includes things such as candy and soft drinks, is where added sugar
is most likely to be found, Statistics Canada said. The report,
based on data collected in 2004, found overall sugar consumption
highest among males 14 to 18 at 41 teaspoons daily, and lowest
among women 71 and older at 20 teaspoons.Males of all age groups
were found to consume more sugar overall than females, but women
from the ages of 19 and up saw significantly greater proportions of
their overall diets taken up by sugar consumption.
