Assistant Principal—Curriculum Report

2017 has already been a year of both opportunity and challenge for students, parents, and staff at San Clemente and will continue to be so. One of these challenges (and opportunities) that is coming up will be the recently announced changes to the HSC. These changes will commence with our Year 9 students from this year. The changes to the HSC include:

a minimum standard of Literacy and Numeracy for the award of the HSC

more emphasis on depth of learning and analytical skills

a stronger emphasis on the mastery of knowledge and skills

a new Science extension course and a single scale for Mathematics courses, and

streamlined assessments to reduce excessive stress and give students greater scope to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do. Beginning with our Year 9 students this year, any student who wishes to receive the HSC from 2020 will be required to meet a minimum Literacy and Numeracy standard. Students with disabilities, undertaking life skills courses, and students from a non-English speaking background who have been learning English for less than one year will be exempt from meeting the standard.

Students will demonstrate they have met the standard by achieving:

a Band 8 in each of their Year 9 NAPLAN reading, writing and numeracy tests, or

pass an online literacy and numeracy test in Years 10, 11 or 12. San Clemente has been preparing for these changes for some time with specific strategies in place designed to improve students results in both Literacy and Numeracy. Some of the these include reading programs in English, Maths and Milo at lunch and the Homework Club in Maths. This year we have implemented further strategies with; the introduction of a Homework Hub for all subjects Mondays from 3-4pm, Literacy classes being timetabled once a fortnight for all students and the new Creative Writing Club at lunch times called The Prose. Staff are giving up a great deal of their time to further develop the students and I would encourage all students to take advantage of this.

Students who are already achieving good results are still encouraged to make the most of these opportunities. In HSC the difference between the top bands in most subjects is often the ability of students to be able to write using advanced tech-niques. Content knowledge will get good results, but knowing how to correctly structure answers and write in a clear and logical way is often the difference between good and great results.

Further information on the changes to the HSC can be accessed at http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/policy-research/pdf_doc/stronger-hsc-std-faq.pdf>

Assistant Principal—Wellbeing On Monday of this week our staff development day was solely focused developing our skills in GROWTH Coaching conver-sations. The staff were lucky enough to be guided by Jason Pascoe from Growth Coaching International through the pro-cess of leading “Solution Focused” conversations. At the start of the day I explained to staff that I believed this model of conversation and the skills that it develops are essential within the San Clemente community if we are to be a true Posi-tive Education school. The philosophy behind Positive Psychology is to seek positive outcomes, not to simply be positive all the time. It is an approach that looks at and focuses on SOLUTIONS as opposed to focussing on PROBLEMS.

“The route to the solution depends on what the solution is, not on what the problem is.”

This approach can be adapted in all we do in a school community, whether it is an academic problem, a social problem or a personal problem. In the classroom, teachers are trying to shift the focus to student centred learning, whereby students use their strengths and find the answers from within, as opposed to the outdated method of “spoon feeding” infor-mation.

Our Restorative Justice approach to student behaviour asks students to look at the issue, take ownership of their actions and to learn from this. It is about helping young people become aware of the impact of their behaviour on others through personal accountability and being open to learning from conflict situations. Our positive education approach asks all members of our community to remain focused on solutions and strengths as opposed to problems and weaknesses. Un-derlying all of these approaches is a need to have the skills to navigate conversations as they occur.

Imagine the number of conversations we have on a daily basis within our school. Our day of training was invaluable in refining and developing our skills to maintain momentum and continue to build on our culture. During the day I started to think of the power of these types of conversations outside of the classroom in our everyday interactions as parents, friends, siblings or sons/daughters. On a personal level I find myself not “practising what I preach” at home with my own children, telling them more what I want from them, rather than leading them through self-discovery and continued learn-ing. This can easily happen due to the busyness of daily life but it can also lead to short term gain as opposed to long term growth.

The GROWTH coaching model focused on these 6 areas of conversation: Goal-Reality-Options-Will-Tactics-Habits

A simple task that explains the power of effective solution based conversations: Imagine a problem you are having at the moment, something simple, every day like: A bill you need to pay, a task you are putting off, a relationship that is not go-ing well. Now Ask yourself these questions:

What is the problem? What is hindering you? Why is this an issue for you? How long have you been experiencing difficul-ties? Who is to blame?

These are “Problem Focused” questions and often invoke feelings of stress, negative emotions, blame, embarrassment etc, etc. Now ask yourself these questions:

What would you like to achieve? What progress have you made so far? What would it mean to achieve success? When in the past have you achieved a positive outcome? Who can help you?

These are “Solution Focused” questions and immediately shift our feelings to that of motivation, puts you at ease, feels achievable and can be inspiring.

The value in shifting our conversations cannot be underestimated. At the forefront of this style is the value it places on maintaining relationships. Even the most difficult of issues can be reframed so that all parties feel there is progress.

School is back—a few reminders….

Parking: Please be mindful when dropping off and picking up students from the front gate, find a park to be safe rather than stopping on the road, with three schools feed-ing onto the area students can come from any direction. Parents are asked not to drive through the grounds

Medication: If your child needs to take medication during school hours it should be left at the office and can be dispensed from there. Students are not to self medicate or carry medication through the day. Please see the office and complete the necessary documentation. If your child suffers from Asthma there needs to be an Asthma plan in place in the event of an attack during school.

Sick Bay: Students should report to sick bay if feeling ill ahead of calling their parents to be picked up.

Year 8 Students I would like to use this opportunity to personally thank the San Clemente community for their support over the past week. I have received countless emails from ex-students and Year 8 parents offering support and prayers to not only Luca Raso and his family, but the entire Year 8 cohort. The sudden passing of Luca has had a major impact on Year 8 and I promise parents that the wellbeing of every Year 8 student will continue to be my major priority. Luca’s smile, personality, caring nature, and love of life will continue to live on in our memories and hearts, and he will always be a cherished member of this beautiful year group. Finally, I would like to say how proud I am of Year 8 for the manner in which they have conduct-ed themselves throughout this very difficult week. They have supported one another and myself, and I cannot thank them enough. Our focus now is to ensure that we all look out for each other and look after one another.

Year 8 recently attended an educational theatre production titled “Sticks and Stones”. The performers explored the differ-ent forms of bullying in the playground, in society and at home. The performance also provided strategies for conflict reso-lution, anger management, assertiveness and breaking the cycle of violence. School yard scenarios were used to encour-age empathy and understanding. The hard-hitting performance was enjoyed by all students, and it was a memorable way for students to relate to issues that will help them make positive changes in their lives.

Shout Outs

Congratulations to Daniel Williams who will be competing this weekend at the State Little Athletics Championships at Homebush. Daniel jumped a PB of 1.63m at Regionals last month to qualify for the State Championships.

Congratulations to Freya Konetschnik who won four medals at the NSW State Surf Lifesaving carnival at Blacksmiths Beach over the weekend. She received a bronze medal in the individual surf race and silver in the individual board race. She also won silver medals for the surf and board team races. Freya will be competing up an age group this weekend in the U15s age bracket at the Open State Surf Lifesaving Championships.

A reminder to Year 8 parents, if you have any concerns at all please contact me at school on 4014 7300 or on the following email address; [email protected]

A final thought Year 8: “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still missed and held so dear”

Patrick Doyle, Year 8 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Year 9 Students At this week’s Year Meeting, I communicated a short story highlighting the importance of time in all our lives. Unlike a bank account, there are no credits or loans for time – what we don’t use is lost. I encouraged students to not lose sight of the value of time: maximise learning time in class and to take notice of the time connecting with their peers.

On Wednesday of this week, I attended the Catholic School’s Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral. During the proceedings, six students from across the Diocese were presented with a Bishop’s Award, recognising their contribution to their parish or church group. Selected from an external panel from the Catholic Schools Office, Kolivette Va from Year 9 was one of the recipients, highlighting his commitment to his local parish and involvement in special liturgies both inside and outside of school. I cannot agree more with the panel’s description of Kol as an “exceptional young man”. His connection to his faith and strong sense of social justice is truly admirable and appreciated in the San Clemente community.

Next Tuesday, Year 9 will have their second, rescheduled Positive Education session for the year, focussing on taking a mindful approach to using social media. As mentioned in a previous edition of Veritas, this session will include information on the negative effect social media can have on wellbeing and ways to use it productively. The intentions and expectations regarding its use will be highlighted, specifically how and what young people feel when using social media: excited? bored? distracted?

A reminder to all students: ensure you are monitoring the due dates of your assessment tasks across all subjects and seek clarification from your teacher if required. Task requirements can be found at http://www.mayfieldsanc.catholic.edu.au/teaching-learning/assessments.

Shout-outs: Harry Fraser for his recent selection in the U/15s Diocesan Rugby League team. The members of the Student Representative Council for Year 9 in 2017 who received their badges at this week’s whole school assembly. Caitlin Byrne, Jayden Fathers, Alec Chapman, Shelby Fanning, Jayce Iobbi, Dylan Patamisi, Georgia Worboys, Julian Craven, Elliot Paksec, Kallum Hobson, Angela Teah-Wilson, Annabelle Jones, Sharni Tilbrook, Erin Pugh, Sam Stokes, Demaris Humphries, Thomas King.

A reminder to all parents/ carers, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate

Year 10 Students On Tuesday at the Year Meeting most students opened a letter. The letter was written by the students on their Year 7

camp addressed to their Year 10 selves. Well, 3 years later, they are in Year 10 and it was time to remind them what their

dreams and goals were and also give them an opportunity to plan for the future. Students received and read this letter

with mixed emotions, some were excited reading about their initial thoughts of SCM. Some laughed at their ‘job aspira-

tions’ and some were proud. Proud, that their goals of leadership, sporting teams, music groups or school work goal had

been achieved. I then reminded them it was time to build on those goals or set new goals. Goals should always be SPE-

CIFIC, MEASUREABLE, ACHIEVABLE, REALISTIC and TIME-FRAMED eg “I would like to achieve an ‘A’ in Science at the end

of the year”. I encourage you to discuss with your children/grandchildren what their goals are for 2017, what they hope

to achieve by the end of the year and what impressions they would like to leave at the end of the year.

Also at the Year Meeting I gave the students a list of important dates for 2017. Please note the following dates in your

diary and/or on your calendar, attendance at these events is highly encouraged.

Year 7 Students The PosED program is up and running at SCM this year. The program is based on the NEF model of wellbeing which highlights 5 key areas for lifetime happiness –

CONNECT, BE ACTIVE, TAKE NOTICE, KEEP LEARNING, GIVE

The focus for this term is connect! This week during extended mentor sessions, Year 7 focussed on happiness and how each student can bring happiness into their lives. The House competition is underway. It is great to see so many students involved!

‘Verbal Combat’ is a Brainstorm production which will be held at school on the 15th March. Cyber bullying in schools is addressed through a cutting edge educational theatre performance. When cyber bullying is anonymous and undercover: WHO’S responsible? WHAT drives cyber bullies to send that nasty message, post that hurtful comment or embarrassing photo on Facebook or

Snapchat? WHY are some people more likely to be a target and why is it hard for victims to be assertive or resilient? WHERE can they go if or when they are being cyber bullied? HOW can we stop cyber bullying from happening? The play aims to educate Year 7 about cyber bullying, digital citizenship, legal ramifications, social websites, cyber safety and resilience. The production is held at school and is included in school fees. With most teenagers having access to the internet, social media and mobile phones, the play and debrief afterwards will provide valuable education for our Year 7 students. There are numerous assessments on at present. Students really need to be organised and completing assessment tasks with more independence than in Year 6. Assessments are available on the school website.

English News Year 9 and 10 students have received their novels for the second unit of the year. The expectation is that Year 10 have their novels read by Week Nine of this term and Year 9 have theirs read by the first day of Term Two. Some time will be given in class to read, however stu-dents should be reading every night as part of their home study. Most of Year 8 have read their novel. Year 7 will commence reading towards the end of Term Two. Students are in their final stages of their formative assessment tasks. Summative tasks will occur in Week 9 for all cohorts. Students have been given hard copies of the summative notifications and they can also be found on the school website. All formative and summative tasks can be found on the English MOODLE. If there are any ques-tions regarding these assessments, or any matters in English, please contact me on the email address below.

You are invited to San Clemente’s 3rd Annual

Globally Called exhibition.

Caritas ambassadors from Year 8 at San Clemente will share their under-

standing of inequality in communities around the world and how Caritas is

helping to improve their livelihoods.

When: Thursday 30 March 2017

Where: Honeysuckle Precinct (adj. Maritime Museum)

These days there is a lot of poverty in the world, and that’s a scandal when we

have so many riches and resources to give everyone.

Pope Francis, 2013

Now in its third year, Globally Called is aimed at giving students the opportunity to be involved in an initiative that develops their 21st century skills, is connected to real life situations and is embedding our Catholic responsibility to act on social justice issues throughout the world. This initiative is a cross-curricular initiative of HSIE (Geography) and Religious Studies.

Students from Year 8 at San Clemente have been called to be ambassadors for Caritas Australia. Their task is to edu-cate others and share their knowledge of Caritas’ programs aimed at creating equality in the world. To achieve this, they must research why Caritas chooses to help other national and global communities, apply the Catholic Model for Social Justice and the Catholic Social Teachings, and gain an understanding of how the programs implemented by Caritas are making a difference to these people’s lives.

On Thursday 30 March 2017, during San Clemente’s centenary year, Globally Called is reaching out to the communi-ty; students will be setting up Caritas stalls along the Honeysuckle Precinct in Newcastle. This will be a great oppor-tunity for our students to educate the wider public of the significant work that Caritas is doing to show compassion to those in need.

We would like to invite parents/guardians and friends of our school to experience this showcase. One hundred and eighty Year 8 students will have stalls set up along Honeysuckle (adjacent to the Maritime Museum) and will demon-strate their skills as Caritas ambassadors between 11:30 and 1pm. Please feel free to contact Mrs Rose McAllister (RE Coordinator) or Ms Leticia Wakely (HSIE Coordinator) if you’d like to know more.

the 100 year celebrations, such as the Ball on the 19th of August and

the Open day on the 27th of August. The P & F will be looking into

how they can support the school community with these events.

We have confirmation of two Kotara Bunnings BBQ’s, these being the 5th of May and 8th of October. Please pencil these

DIOCESAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP Tuesday March 7

Congratulations to a great representative team who competed with much enthusiasm and displayed their talents in all

races. We were very proud of them as a team representing San Clemente. I would hope that students who decided not to

attend, to think of the opportunity that they had to be the best that they could be in this area of sport. Sport is a way to

develop the whole student.

Four students shone especially and will compete in Sydney in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Championships. They

are: Emma Preece Yr 10, Yasmin Popovic and Eireann Hurley Yr 9 and Egan Roberts Yr 8. Well done and good luck!

Our 15/16 Years Girls' relay teams were narrowly beaten in both medley & freestyle events, so just missed out. It was a

most enjoyable day - thank you to our fantastic team, Mr Byrne who accompanied me as team manager and Ms Wilde &

Mr Blanch who were officials.

Spotting Strengths in Each Other

San Clemente has a significant focus on strengths, as students and staff are encouraged to recognise their own strengths and draw on these in their everyday interactions and class work. Another important element of this focus, is an attention to the strengths of others.

In Pos-Ed sessions this week our Year Eight students took the time to take notice of each other, recognising the gifts that their peers have to share. The truth is while it’s relatively easy to spot the worst in others, finding the best in people and ways you can bring more of this out in their work isn’t something most of us naturally excel at. Scientists have long understood that while we all share a deep psychological need to be respected, valued and appreciated, the negativity bias hardwired into our brain makes us much better at spotting what we don’t like about people, ra-ther than their strengths.

Students were encouraged to ask the following questions about another individual in their mentor group…

What do they love doing?

What things come easy to them?

What things do they look forward to doing?

What things would you say that they do well?

What tasks seem to make them feel good?

Really considering the answers to these questions enables students to identify strengths in each other and gain a better understanding of this powerful process.

To finish off the session, students played a game of STRINGO – strengths bingo. A copy of the game board is copied below, perhaps you could play a game at home.

To all staff and students at San Clemente High School We would like to thank the wonderful staff for giving us such a warm welcome and taking good care of us during our practicum here. Spending these last five weeks with you have been very exciting for us. With your help and the challenges you have given us, we have been able to develop ourselves both profes-sionally and personally.

Among many highlights, we would especially like to mention the year 7 camp trip and the year 8 maths day as memorable experiences. We are also very impressed by the way year 9 and 10 students lead the way for their younger peers, showing examples of good behaviour as well as wonderful leadership. We wish them all the best of luck in the future.

We would also like to give an extra thank you to our supervising teachers: Mr Doyle, Mrs Sharman, Mrs Wakely and Mrs Wilks, for putting up with our stupid questions.

We will miss you all, and we´re hoping that this is not the last time we´ll see you. Let us know if you are coming to Norway in the near future.

Takk for oss!

Elin, Antonios, Tonje and Andreas
