Assistant Principal—Curriculum Report

I mentioned in the last edition of Veritas that Professor Stephen Dinham of the University of Melbourne re-ports that the largest effect on student learning is the student themselves. This is mostly the result of their preparation, the things that happen outside of the classroom. Does your child come to school prepared to work towards academic excellence every day, ready to take full advantage of the opportunities provided? In our busy lives it is difficult at times to keep a healthy balance of work, rest and play, however, these are some of the basics that all students should ensure they are doing to keep learning;

Every morning:

Start the day with a healthy breakfast.

This will not only provide important daily nutrients for growing bodies, but it also helps improve school per-formance. According to a study published in the journal “Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine," students who regularly ate a healthy breakfast had significantly higher marks than students who skipped or rarely ate breakfast. As an added benefit, the group of students who increased breakfast participation also had decreased rates of tardiness and absences. According to research published in “Physiology and Behav-iour," students given a low-glycaemic breakfast were able to sustain attention longer than children given a high-glycaemic breakfast. Children following the low-glycaemic breakfast plan also had improved memory and fewer signs of frustration when working on school tasks.

Double check your school bag is packed with all your learning materials.

Folder, books, pens, ruler, calculator, laptop, English novel, reading glasses. These are the essentials. Without these items students are not able to take full advantage of the opportunities given to them in the classroom. By being prepared to learn and having all the necessary equipment students will feel more confident and be able to participate in every aspect of all lessons.

Every afternoon:

Homework and assignments.

Every night students should be encouraged to complete additional study. That may be in the form of home-work, an assignment or reading over notes. The more students practise what they are taught in the class-room the greater the depth of understanding.

Pack your bag and organise your uniform.

It is last minute rushing in the morning that inevitably leads to forgotten or lost items. As mentioned earlier, if you’re prepared for school you’re prepared to learn. Students should check their timetables the night be-fore and ensure their bags are packed with the necessary equipment and their uniforms are clean and ready.

Get a good night’s sleep.

It is recommended by The Sleep Foundation that 14 – 17 year olds sleep 8 – 10 hours a night and more for younger children. Sleep is important for many reasons, it protects your mental health, physical health, quality of life and safety. Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you’re sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It’s forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Studies show that a good night’s sleep improves learning.

If students can work towards improving these areas, then they are giving themselves the best chance to keep learning and are working towards academic excellence.

Assistant Principal—Wellbeing “Building Wholeness, Wellness and a Winning attitude.”

Last week our school, along with every other school in NSW completed NAPLAN testing. NAPLAN is a government required form of assessment and used as the basis (along with HSC) for “ranking” schools on the MySchool web-site. In Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald there was a very interesting article that looked at the problems associ-ated with using this as the only measure of success in schools. This data alone has shown a rapid decline in stand-ards in Australian schools between 2003 and 2012. Unfortunately, what this data does not show is the great work done by many schools, San Clemente as an example, in providing “value added” opportunities for students. Mr Craig Jones from the Department for Education and Statistics said “ Our plan for the future of the value-added measure is to extend into those non-academic types of measure, so looking at the contribution schools make to the probability that a student will complete school, or increase their attendance rates or decrease the probability they will be suspended or excluded from school.”

Well renowned Education researcher, Professor John Hattie, looked at this further saying “the biggest crime in Australia in Education is that only one in five kids who start school, finish.” He went on to infer that of course we want high progress and high achievement but that quality schools are those that have growth, high attendance and retention and promote an environment of “fairness”.

The mission statement for our Positive Education program states – “Building Wholeness, Wellness and a Winning attitude in our students”. This combined with a Restorative Justice approach to behavioural issues, where “fairness” for all is the focus is providing the “value-added” outcomes that are indicators of a quality school. For San Clemente the evidence looks promising. We continue to see the rate of suspensions declining, attendance positive, communication between home and school a priority, and a steady growth in academic results. From my perspective I see the proof on a daily basis, students are generally warm and welcoming. Once a week I try to stand on bus lines and greet students as they enter the school. I do this for my own benefit as students walk through the gates smiling, talking, saying “good morning” and seem genuinely pleased to be coming to school, providing me with a reminder that San Clemente is not a school but a community striving for excellence and pro-ducing quality human beings. The schools mission statement is one that is lived out by all in our community and is a constant reminder of the “bigger picture” in regard to achievement at San Clemente:

Nathan Beckett, Assistant Principal (Wellbeing)

Year 8 Students I often have conversations with parents and friends who are concerned that their child spends too much time on their mobile phone, IPad or Xbox. I read a recent article that stated too much screen time is hurting children’s imagination, attention span, their ability to interact with peers, and, it is messing with sleep patterns. According to a new meta-analysis from King’s College, London, “the ubiquity of smartphones and tablets is reducing the amount of sleep kids get, the quality of that sleep and increasing daytime sleepiness. Even when devices are in kids’ room, but not in use, they hurt kids’ ability to get the sleep they need. The analysis looked at screen use among more than 125,000 kids.” Adoles-cents require a minimum of 9 hours of sleep each night. Sleep is critical to a child’s wellbeing and their ability to engage and function at school. Removing mobile phones and I pads from your son/daughter at 8pm may be a struggle but the benefits speak for themselves.

Over the next 3 weeks, Year 8 will be busy on the assessment front with in class examinations and research tasks due. Please refer to the Year 8 assessment schedule accessible on the school’s website under the Teaching and Learning tab. It is important for parents during busy assessment periods to support their child and give them a gentle nudge if re-quired. A reminder, that any questions/issues your child has in relation to assessment tasks, the first point of contact is the relevant subject teacher.

As the weather turns cooler students start to improvise with their uniform. Beanies are not allowed, scarves are but they must be black or white only. Only official school jumpers and cardigans with the schools crest are to be worn. Students are able to wear garments under their school jumper provided they are out of sight and do not interfere with the school uniform. Thank you for your support with this matter.

Shout Out

A huge thank you to all the Year 8 students who regularly greet me with a good morning Mr Doyle, how are you, hello….. Your kind words always make me smile and brighten my day.

A reminder to Year 8 parents, if you have any concerns at all please contact me at school on 4014 7300 or on the follow-ing email address; [email protected]

A final thought Year 8, “No act of kindness is ever wasted”.

Patrick Doyle, Year 8 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Year 7 Students

Last week our school, along with every other NSW school completed the NAPLAN testing. NAPLAN is a government re-quired form of assessment and is used as the basis for “ranking” schools on the my school website. I would like to con-gratulate Year 7 on the mature manner in which they conducted themselves during the NAPLAN tests. Many people have read much in the media recently regarding the new “standards” that Year 7 and Year 9 students must achieve in NAPLAN tests in order to be eligible for a HSC ATAR. My view of NAPLAN is this: the tests provide a GLIMPSE of how your child performs in Maths and English on ONE DAY. There are hundreds of days at school not just ONE!

At San Clemente we pride ourselves on striving to produce well rounded, whole students. The type of students that pos-sess the social capital and academic standards that will result in quality, happy, thriving lives as young adults. Our pro-grams including the Pos Ed program which is filtered through every aspect of our school focussing on “building whole-ness, wellness and a winning attitude”. I believe that our approach is well rounded in assisting our students to develop into well rounded young men and women. A significant key in achieving this is the building and maintenance of strong relationships between the three stakeholders: the students, school and parents/carers. Please feel free to contact my-self or any other staff member for any questions, queries or concerns, [email protected] or phone 40147300.

With the colder weather upon us, I am seeking parental assistance in ensuring students are wearing their uniform cor-rectly. White socks are a must with no embellishing or logos. School jumpers are to be worn not casual clothing.

Next week Year 7 are participating in a poetry workshop on 22nd May, this has been organised through the English Facul-ty.

The Under 13’s Knights Knock out team also play on the 23rd of May.

High Five:

Brenden Bokodi-Duckett who has been assisting a primary school child on the bus of an afternoon in learning to read. Well done!!!

Year 9 Students In Week 7, Year 9 students will sit their first formal examinations as high school students. Only two full school weeks re-main before this period begins and students should (if they haven’t already) be starting to prepare. Year 9, here are a few tips to help you study:

Study alone: Avoid group study sessions and save the social time for after exams.

Study area: Your study space SHOULD NOT include access to television, mobile phone and social media. Find a quiet, comfortable space, free of distractions.

Be organised: Ensure your study materials are readily accessible in hard or digital form before you start. Don’t waste time looking for them.

Summaries: Avoid studying every piece of individual content for your subjects – this is too much. Use flash cards, mind-maps or topic summaries to organise information in to manageable chunks.

Examinations and assessments can understandably trigger increased levels of anxiety and stress in young people. During this period, I encourage all students to maintain BALANCE in their lives, including:

Healthy diet: eat regular meals and a variety of healthy foods to maintain focus and energy levels.

Stay active: Physical activity is an ideal way to alleviate stress and to take a break from studying. Consider exercising with a friend or family member to foster social connections.

Regular sleep pattern: Avoid studying late at night to ensure you are going to bed around the same time each night.

Hobbies/ Sport/ Work: Maintain interest and commitments in these areas, but balance them around study times over the next few weeks. That extra training session or late-night shift can wait until after exams.

Seek help: I encourage all students to speak to their parents, teachers or myself if they are feeling overwhelmed.

Shout-outs:

Good luck to the boys involved in Knights Knockout Rugby League competitions over the next fortnight.

Well done to Kolivette Va, Aysha Yuhermon-Taylor, Finlay Doyle, Will Loy and Anabelle Jones on a fantastic musical per-formance at this week’s whole school assembly.

A reminder to all parents/ carers, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate in contacting me on 4014 7300 or at [email protected]

Year 9 Exam Week: Monday 5th June – Friday 9th June

Year 10 Students On Thursday we attended the Careers Expo, a big thank you to Mr Mitch Allan for organising this wonderful opportunity

for our Year 10 students. It was a great day for students to investigate their options post high school. The Careers Expo

can also give students direction and a goal for their studies this year and beyond. I encourage families to talk with their

child about the experience at the Expo. I have spoken to several students who are quite stressed about the big decisions

that need to be made and are unsure what they want to ‘do’ in life and are feeling very overwhelmed. Please work with

your young person, discuss their options and assure them that they don’t have to make a final decision today reassuring

them that it is such an exciting time ahead for them.

Year 10 Students have also been very busy completing assessment tasks and preparing for semester examinations (week

8). I again urge students (and parents) to use the assessment booklet in preparing for and organising time allocation for

assessment tasks and exam preparation. And please see you teacher or TLC if you have any questions.

A reminder to parents that Retreat Medical and Permission notes are now due. The payment for retreat was placed onto

Term 2 school fees, however, it is important that the retreat fee is paid prior to the event in week 10. Please do not hesi-

tate to contact me with any concerns or questions.

Finally, a big shout out to our senior girls rugby team on an outstanding performance last week. The girls had a win, draw

and loss and a lot of fun along the way! A big shout out also goes to Emma Preece who recently made the NSW Water

Polo Team. Well done Ladies!

Students in Year 7 and 9 sat for their NAPLAN tests last week. The Year 9 Language Conventions test had some tricky questions that I thought I’d mention here.

English

English students can prepare for their summative assessments by using MOODLE. A variety of activities and resources have been placed on MOODLE for students to use as home study. Students work from their MOODLE in class and are encouraged to use MOODLE at home. If internet is unavailable at home, students can upload docu-ments at school and save onto their devices.

Most students have completed formative tasks and have received feedback from their teachers. Students are asked to reflect on their learning and articulate what they are doing well and what they need to develop. Students are encouraged to use teacher feedback and self-evaluation as they prepare for their summative tasks.

Many students are reading quality literature both in class and as part for their home study. This is an effective way of increasing vocabulary and improving literacy. All of our students are welcome to visit the library and borrow novels. (Please ensure that overdue books are returned!)

If you have any questions regarding the teaching of English at San Clemente, please

Mock Trial Round 2

San Clemente’s Mock Trial team played against Saint Francis Xavier at Newcastle Court House a few weeks ago. It was a

criminal case based on match fixing during a soccer game, our client was accused of ‘throwing’ 3 penalties during a local

match.

San Clemente was victorious in winning the overall game on points however we lost the case.

Congratulations goes to Mary Betell, Shauna Byrnes, Vinni DeGail, Joshua Hayward, Isa-bella Mulligan and Alarna Thompson for an outstanding team effort and giving up a lot of your valuable time to prepare these cases, learn scripts and write pre trial notes. It is a great achievement for the team to be win-ning against teams of Year 11 students, who are currently studying Legal Studies. Thank you also to Rhona Curry for being part of the team and coming to support us during the case. Thank you once again to Mr Brian Kelly for your ongoing coaching and last minute legal advice for the team. Mrs Sheridan Pruteanu (Mock Trial Coordinator)

SRC Wellbeing Campaign

Be kind and be yourself

Yesterday at assembly two members of our Student Repre-sentative Council spoke about their mission to inspire eve-ryone be happy with who they are and support others to be happy with who they are too. Here is what they said: Hi Everybody!

We are part of the SRC Wellbeing Team and today we would like to talk to you about our mission to encourage everyone to find inspiration within themselves and in turn inspire others to be who they are.

We started by posting this quote by Edwin Elliot around the school and in your Homerooms: “By being yourself, you put something wonderful into the world that wasn’t there be-fore”. Our idea behind this was to demonstrate that we are all unique and not perfect. If we can keep this in mind we can all try to be kind to ourselves and each other. If we each say one kind thing to someone different each day, our community would be a happier place and every-

one’s self-esteem would be higher, and we would be ready to work each day.

That’s why the next step in our project will be to moti-vate you to do just that. If you would like to find out what it is – stay posted. We would also love it if you shared any ideas and thoughts you have with us and we will try our best to put them into action.

Be yourself and continue to shine. Thank you for listening and hope you have a good day. “Your only limit is you!”

Jasmine and Scarlett, Year 8 SRC

Year 10 Linoprints Year 10 Visual Arts students have been studying artworks which include text in some manner. They researched some tough social issues including domestic violence, body image, animal protection, children in detention and gambling. They then ana-lysed the way text has been used in art for persuasive purposes in order to support their designs, and creative processes in making a series of powerful linoprints. These are a few excellent examples from the class by Chanmi Park, Bronte Skinner, Gemma Balkin, Shauna Byrnes and Anaie Rebesco. The full class collection will be on display at the annual Sight and Sound exhi-bition at the end of the year.
