reddish gray and about the size of a pea shaped like a pine cone

synthesizes and secretes melatonin, which regulates the circadian rhythms of several biological functions & reproductive function of many animals

synthesis and secretion of melatonin is affected by light exposure to the retina

low during the day, high at night

melatonin affects sleep and activity: high melatonin production induces fatigue, decreases motor activity, and lowers body temperature
