GAS AND OIL FILL-UP
Oil (Packed with unit)
Only use high quality detergent oil ratedwithAPI serviceclassification SF, SG orSH. Selectthe oil's viscositygrade accordingto yourexpectedoperatingtemperature. Followthechartbelow.
32°F WarmerColder _ I
5W30 I SAE 30
NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30,etc.) improve starting in cold weather, thesemultiviscosity oils willresult in increasedoilconsumptionwhen usedabove 32°F. Check the oillevel more frequently to avoid possible enginedamage from runninglow onoil.
Fill engine with oil as follows.Remove oilfill dipstick. See figure 10.

With chipper-shredder on levelground, use afunnel to fillengine with oil to FULL mark ondipstick.Capacity is approximately 26 ounces.Be careful notto overfill.Check oil level.
Add oil if necessary. Replace dipstick andtighten.
NOTE: Do not overfill. Oil bottle packed with unitcontains 26 oz. of oil.
Gasoline
WARNING: Experienceindicatesthat alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanolormethanol)can attract moisturewhich leadstoseparationand formationof acidsduringstorage.Acidicgas can damage the fuelsystemof an enginewhileinstorage. To avoid engineproblems, the fuelsystemshould be emptied before storage for 30daysor longer.Drain the gas tank, start the engineand letit run until the fuel linesand carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel nextseason. See STORAGEinstructionsfor additionalinformation.Never useengine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tankorpermanent damage may occur.
Fillgas tank with gas as follows.Remove fuel cap. See figure 10.Make sure the container (from which you willpour the gasoline) is clean and free from rust orforeign particles. Never use gasoline that maybe stale from long periods of storage in thecontainer.Fill fuel tank with clean, fresh, lead-freeautomotive gasoline. DO NOT use Ethyl or highoctane gasoline. See figure 10.Replace fuel cap.
WARNING: Do not fill closer than 1/2 inchof topof fuel tank to preventspillsand toallowfor fuel expansion. If gasolineisaccidentlyspilled, move chipper-shredderaway from area of spill.Avoid creatinganysourceof ignitionuntilgasolinevaporshavedisappeared.
Check the fuel levelperiodically to avoid runningout of gasoline while operating the chipper-shredder.If the unit runs out of gas as it is shredding orchipping, it may be necessary to unclogthe unitbefore itcan be restarted.Refer to "Removingthe FlailScreen" instructionsin SERVICE ANDADJUSTMENT section.

NOTE: A noise will be heard when finding the start ofthe compression cycle. This noise is caused by the
flails and fingers which are part of the shreddingmechanism falling intoplace, and shouldbeexpected./n addition, the flails and fingers will benoisyafter the engine is started, untilthe impellerreaches furl speed.

USING YOUR CHIPPER-SHREDDER
A WARNING: Do not attempt to shred orchip any matedal otherthanvegetationfoundina normalyard(i.e., branches,leaves,twigs,etc.).
The chipper-shredderis designed for twodifferent methodsof operation.a. Leaves and small branchesupto 1/2"
diameter (maximum)can be fed intothehopperassemblywhen it is in the raisedorloweredposition.See figure12.
b. Bulky material, such as stalksor heavybranches,up to 3" in diameter shouldbefed intothe chipperchute. See figure 12.
A WARNING: Do not put material largerthan is specifiedinto the hopper, and/or intothe chipperchute. Personal injuryordamage to the machinecould result.
If it becomesnecessaryto pushmaterialintothechipper-shmdder,use a smalldiameter stick-NOT YOUR HANDS. The stickshouldbe smallenoughthat itwill be groundup if it gets intotheimpellerassembly.
LOWER THE HOPPER ASSEMBLY
To lowerthe hopper assembly, use one handtograsp the hand-hold at the top of the hopperassemblyand liftslightly.See figure 5.Pullup onthe release bar, and lower the hopperassemblyto the ground.Release the bar. Seefigure 5.
A WARNING: Never remove chute deflectortillthe unit has completely stopped.Nevershut offthe engine until all chipping iscompleted.
For best performance, it is important to keep theshreddingblade and the chipper blades sharp. If thecomposition of the material being discharged
10
changes(becomesstdngy, etc.) or if the rate atwhichthe material is discharged slows down considerably, itis likely that the shredding blade and/or chipperblades are dull and need to be sharpened orreplaced. Refer to Service and Adjustments section.IMPORTANT: There is a flail screen located insidethe housing in the discharge area. If the flail screenbecomes clogged, remove and clean as instructed inthe Service and Adjustments section.
A WARNING: The chipper-shredderdischarges materialswithconsiderablevelocity.Keep away from the area aroundthedischargechute. Always stopthe engine anddisconnectsparkplugwirewhen removingorattachingthe bag, changing containers, orremovingtheshreddedmatarial.Wear safetyglassesandgloveswheneverusingyourchipper-shredder.
