zPresident’s MessageSean Ryan

Summer is off to a great start in OC! The swim team is starting to peak heading into qualifications & championships, the pool looks beautiful and the playground & tennis courts are abuzz. One of the reasons I love living in OC is all of the summer activities for residents of all ages. I would encourage you to come out for the 4th of July festivities, Music on the Lawn, impromptu gatherings at the pool or try your skill at pickleball. Kids of all ages can even partake in one of the Louisville Sports Academy programs happening right here in the neighborhood. So much to do before summer ends; make the most of the opportunities the best neighborhood in Louisville provides.

The weather has been terrific for the pool this summer. It truly is a great neighborhood asset and we work hard to keep it that way. As you know our pool is exclusively for our residents and their guests. This is why we ask all people entering the pool to show proof of Owl Creek residency and sign in. Our lifeguards are instructed to make sure this happens, so please do not be offended when asked. You can simply take a picture of your license and keep it on your cell phone; it doesn’t get any easier than that. Please help us keep the pool safe for all users by following the pool rules, especially when it comes to use of the diving board. If you see an unsafe condition please bring it to our guards’ attention. It is always appreciated when everyone pitches in for safety.

On a final note, you will soon see the front entrance stamped concrete being replaced. The new design will greatly enhance our entrance and the first impression visitors have when they come into our neighborhood. The project will kick off after the 4th of July and hopefully be completed by mid-August. Residents will receive detailed updates via email on the timeline and details of the project. Please read the updates as they will inform you of changes in the traffic patterns when sections of the front entrance are closed. Our goal is to make sure everyone knows what is going on with this project so we avoid confusion and unsafe conditions at Hobbs Station & Dorsey. Once completed, we will all agree the slight inconvenience will be well worth it.

That is all for now, have a great July 4th!

Dad and Kids Campout Set for September 18-20, Patoka LakeIt’s almost that time of year again. Every fall, the Dads pack up the kids, gear and supplies and head out for a weekend of camping and fun. This year we will again return to Patoka Lake State Park. There will be prepared group meals Friday for dinner and Saturday and Sunday mornings for breakfast. We have scheduled lots of games for the kids, a group hike and on Saturday night, a big bonfire with a story teller. This event gets bigger every year, and even if you don’t think you’re the camping type, this is the one to try.

If you are interested in helping plan, we are always ready to welcome volunteers to assist with the following:

Communication and Registration

Logistics - supplies, trailers, transportation to & from

Set up and take down of the food pavilion

Coordinate preparation & serving food

Kids’ Activities: Hiking, Games, Scavenger Hunt & Bonfire

There will be a website provided at a later date to go and sign up for your volunteer activities. If at all possible, please consider taking the Friday of campout weekend off and coming up early to help set up the main tent area. It is a big task and we will need your help!

The registration form can soon be found on the Owl Creek website or at the Lodge. Reminder: Patoka Lake State Park does not allow us to bring in our own firewood. We will contract a local supplier to bring in firewood that we will sell on site or you can buy from the state park.

In order to keep delivering a great experience for everyone, we need your support, so please contact one of us and offer to volunteer.

Shredding In the Rain

Even though it was a soggy morning, our resilient OC residents loaded their car trunks and headed to the Lodge for the annual shredding event. It was a great turnout even through the downpour. A+ Paper Shredding was on-site and shredded 3,960 pounds of paper! This is the most paper shredded since we began hosting this annual event years ago. Next year, they may have to bring 2 trucks!

Although this is a free service for the community, a charity is in attendance to collect donations for their cause. This year the featured charity was Kentucky Wounded Heroes, who gratefully reported a $583 donation from our residents. They wanted to thank you all for your generosity and interest in supporting the great work they are doing.

HELPING HANDSBonnie Chiarot

With summer in full swing, I’d like to remind you all of an engine, of sorts, that hums in the background of Owl Creek while all of the fun activities such as Swim Team, pool days, tennis games & Music on the Lawn are going on. This engine is Helping Hands, an ever-growing group of unsung heroes who volunteer their time, energy, and resources to meet the needs of others in our Owl Creek community.

This past month, due to the generosity of a particular couple, several of us were able to beautify a neighbor’s yard, pulling weeds, trimming trees/shrubs and laying mulch. This simple act of kindness provided joy and peace of mind to a neighbor who was spending every day at the hospital while his wife spent her last days on earth.

We launched another card campaign for Justin McClelland, who, in spite of astronomical challenges, completed high school. He was unable to walk with St.X or even be home with his friends to celebrate, so we sent him congratulations cards to let him know his graduation did not go unnoticed. (Please keep encouraging cards flowing; they make a difference! Address: 1809 18th Court, Jupiter, FL 33477)

Finally, as we sadly said goodbye to a longtime neighbor and friend, we were able to provide watchful eyes over her family’s home during her wake and funeral to ensure its safety.

On a business note, as I have spoken with people around the neighborhood, I have heard a number of comments that several of you have “fallen off” of the email list and are not receiving Helping Hands requests and notifications. I will be working with Kim Brice to remedy this as soon as possible; in the meantime, if this is true for you, please let one of us know. You can contact me, Bonnie, at [email protected] or 693-8879, or contact Kim at the Lodge.

SENIORS GROUPGlenda & Mike RyanDAY TRIP PLANNEDFriday, July 31, 8am – 4:30pm

This month we head to French Lick, West Baden Springs Resort area in IN. Since the 1850’s, this area has been known for it’s mineral springs and now has a resort hotel & casino.

We will tour the West Baden Springs Hotel which was known in the early 20th century as the 8th Wonder of the World. We will have lunch in the hotel’s gigantic atrium and visit the French Lick Museum. There we can see the history of the area and hotels, plus a large completely hand-made model of the Hagenbeck and Wallace Circus. This was the second largest circus in the world and it wintered at the hotel. This is a fascinating tour.

We will meet in the pool parking lot at 8AM and carpool to West Baden for a 10AM tour. Lunch at Bradford’s in the Atrium and on to a 1 hour tour of the museum. We will arrive back in Louisville about 4:30PM. The drive is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Cost of the tour w/o lunch is about $17. There is a good deal of walking during the hotel tour, but there are places to sit down and it is all on one floor. We will not have time to visit the casino and French Lick Hotel.

Please call Mike and Glenda Ryan if you have any questions and to make a reservation prior to July 14th. 244-7753

PickleballPlayers meet in the gym for two hours of exercise and camaraderie.

Yard of the Month (YOM)By Kristen Pawlak, [email protected]

Wow - “OC”ers have really stepped up their yard game, so I have decided to award two YOMs each month! So for this Independence month, our two YOM recipients are Gary & Darlene Kinney of 702 Sentry and John & Deborah Hall of 10746 Hobbs Station Road!

First, the Kinneys have lived in the neighborhood for 25 years. Darlene says credit is due to Gary for starting their well-maintained, manicured lawn and she has taken it over in recent years. Darlene is meticulous with her maintenance, keeps the bushes trimmed, has a very nice display of color, and always has something pretty on the front door.

John and Deborah have lived in OC for nine years and love it. John keeps the grass trimmed while an outside company routinely fertilizes it. Deb does all the rest, and loves flowers that come back each year. She especially loves to bring special plants and fertilizer from her parent’s farm in Indiana. This includes a very unique strain of iris. With busy young children she says working on her lawn and flowers is her therapy!

Congratulations to Gary & Darlene and John & Deborah, beautiful yards!

Are you receiving Owl Creek Security Alerts & Community News?If not, please send your email address to Kim at the Lodge and you will be added to the distribution list. Also, let us know if you have changed your email address or wish to unsubscribe from our database.

KINNEY

HALLJust wanted to send another shout-out regarding the online Owl Creek Newsletter!

We have always loved and enjoyed the paper copy of the newsletter placed in our paper box at the beginning of each month. However, since the newsletter began appearing online, it is now our choice of viewing. We download it to a file on our computers for easy viewing at any time (no more hunting the house for the paper copy)! It is truly wonderful to see the color pictures of Owl Creek events; great financial chart information; home of the month; great clipart; and even the ads. Maybe sometime in the future, all Owl Creek households will get their newsletter online resulting in lower printing costs and also saving a tree! (Marlene & Bob Miller, Lodge Hill Road)

Did you know?If you have small dogs that bark continuously when outside, please be considerate of your neighbors who are trying to enjoy peace & quiet in their backyards.

AT THEPOOL!

OWL CREEK POOL SAFETY AND OPERATIONS ~ ~ ~Parents (or designated responsible person) must be in close proximity to children under 12. If they use personal flotation devices and/or cannot swim, this means being in the water by them or close to the edge of the pool. The more crowded the pool, the more important this becomes. If a life guard determines that a child is struggling or is potentially at risk, they will let you know more attention is needed or require the child to get out of the water.

We allow flotation type mats and toys when the pool is not crowded. On busy days, the guards will decide when it is time to stop using these devices.

Water basketball has proven to be a fun event. On weekends we move the backboard to the side of the pool where it is less crowded. On busy days, the guards will decide when it is time to curtail the game so that other swimmers’ fun and safety are ensured.

Food must remain at least 6 feet away from the pool edge. Drinks are allowed up to the pool edge but not in the pool (for example a person sitting on the edge of the pool with their feet in the water can have a drink in hand but a person in the pool cannot have a drink in hand).

Trash & Cleanup: Please be respectful of guests who will use our tables & chairs after you leave, and place your trash in the containers. If you have spilled, the guards have towels & cleaning spray at the entrance to the pool. A quick wipe-up will ensure your neighbors have a clean place to sit.

Walk don’t run: We are all about safety and hope you will keep that top of mind by always walking within the pool area. This will help prevent slips, falls and bumping into to others.

Diving Board Rules: To use the diving board and swim in the deep end, swimmers must be able to swim across the width of the pool unassisted.

Forward and backward flips, dives and jumps are allowed off the Owl Creek pool diving board. However, at all times the momentum of the dive must be away from the board. No reverse movements, back toward the diving board, are allowed at any time.

Only one (1) person is allowed on the diving board at a time.

Look before diving or jumping to make sure no one is in the diving area.

Only one (1) bounce is allowed on the diving board

Swim immediately to the closest ladder or wall

Flotation devices such as “water wings” and other Personal Flotation Devices are not allowed to be used when jumping off the diving board. The only exception is the use of a fully enclosed Personal Flotation Device under the strict supervision of a NEARBY PARENT, to assist with the confidence of children that are learning to swim. If possible, the above mentioned exception should be United States Coast Guard approved.

Dive only when supervised by a lifeguard, swimming instructor, or coach.

Did you know?Parking Reminder: If you have to park on the street or have guests visiting, please be mindful of your neighbors and park in front of your own house.

NOTE: Fireworks are not allowed to be used on Owl Creek common grounds such as the track, Lodge or gym parking lots.

Fireworks during the Fourth of July are as American as apple-pie, but did you know that more fires are reported on that day than on any other day of the year in the United States? Nearly half of these fires are caused by fireworks. The good news is you can enjoy your holiday and the fireworks, with just a few simple safety tips:

Welcome New Residents

Scott Harrington1514 Sable Wing CircleMoved from Simpsonville, KY

Doug & Angela Hepner10507 Hobbs Station Rd.Moved from Louisville area

Jason & Jennifer Woods11501 Hobbs Station Rd.Moved from Louisville area

If you are new to the neighborhood, please register at the Lodge and schedule a New Resident Orientation.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION!Leave fireworks to the professionals.

Do not use consumer fireworks.

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend apublic display conducted by trained professionals.

After the firework display, children should never pick up fireworks that may be left over, they may still be active.

Consumer fireworks include sparklers and firecrackers. The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause third-degree burns.

FIREWORKS SAFETY REMINDERS

FACTSEach July Fourth, thousands of people, mostoften children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks.

The risk of fireworks injury is more than twice as high for children ages 10–14 as for the general population.

SAFETY TIPSChief Jeffrey J. Riddle

GOOD NEWS!!!The Middletown Fire District was recently reevaluated by ISO (Insurance Services Office). ISO evaluates in 3 areas: Receiving & Handling of Fire Alarms (MetroSafe Dispatch), The Fire Dept (equipment, personnel, distribution of resources, training, etc...) & Water Supply (Louisville Water Company). The Fire District only has control over “The Fire Dept” section. After evaluation & scoring, they issue a rating of 1-10, 1 being the best. Middletown previously held a Class 3 rating. I’m pleased to report that starting Sept 1, 2015, we will be rated as a Class 1 Fire Dept. ISO evaluates over 47,000 fire departments nationwide and only 105 are rated Class 1. I am very proud!!

The good news is how this may affect your home owners insurance. On or after Sept 1, 2015, you should contact your insurance carrier and let them know that your Fire Protection Classification has improved to a Class 1. Depending on your insurance carrier you may be eligible for some additional discounts.

I would like to thank both the career and volunteer members of the Middletown Fire Protection District for their hard work, dedication and professionalism, without them this rating would not have been achieved.

Safety Tips for Summer Heat!Heat ExhaustionThe following information was gathered to help you deal with extreme heat. For more info I have provided two additional websites.

Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heat-related illness that can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of fluids. Those most prone to heat exhaustion are elderly people, people with high blood pressure, and people working or exercising in a hot environment.

Warning Signs of Heat Exhaustion include: Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting or fainting

The skin may be cool and moist. The victim’s pulse rate will be fast and weak, and breathing will be fast and shallow. If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Seek medical

attention and call 911 immediately if: symptoms are severe, or the victim has heart problems or high blood pressure.

Otherwise, help the victim to cool off, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or last longer than one hour.

Heat exhaustion treatmentCooling measures that may be effective include: cool, non-alcoholic beverages, as directed by your physician. Other treatments include: rest, cool shower, bath, or sponge bath, an air-conditioned environment and lightweight clothing.
