Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to mid-13th century. Through the centuries Our Lady of Mount Carmel kept a constant watch over her children, interceding for them and leading them to Her Divine Son. Amidst the sea of confusion in the world today, may Our Lady of Mount Carmel grant us strength and fortitude so we may all remain faithful to Her Son and His Holy Church. St. Patrick’s R.C. This is a deliberate act of reaching out to others in need. We can ask who are the ones thrown to the side of the road today? The former prisoner, the asylum seeker and refugee, the forgotten young person among others. All can be helped to their feet and to carry on in life through the help and care of another. God of love, give us a deep love for you, so that we can see the world as you see it, feel the compassion you feel and be a people whose lives mediate your love to others. So open our eyes that we might see what the Good Samaritan saw. Grant us the insight to see the need in others, the wisdom to know what to do and the will to do it. Amen. Today is Sea Sunday, when the Church prays for all those who live and work at sea. The Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) works for the spiritual and social welfare of all seafarers. It has a network of Chaplains, both lay and ordained, supported by fully trained and equipped volunteer Ship Visitors, working in ports throughout England, Scotland and Wales. They are particularly active in the north east of England, especially in our diocese, with a presence in all of the commercial ports in the region. The AoS exists to help seafarers sustain and nourish their faith whilst away from home and family for long periods. We all rely upon seafarers for much of the food we eat, the clothes we wear and for other consumables. Today’s second collection is our opportunity to support the work of the Apostleship of the Sea. Almighty God, we remember those whose lives are lived on your great oceans. For those who live and work at sea, they enrich our lives at great personal cost. May they daily feel the strength of your protection, the warmth of your presence and the love of your relationship as they seek hope of a safe passage. Comfort them in times of loneliness and need and remind them that, in you, they are never alone, particularly when they are struggling with poor weather conditions or sickness. Amen.
