From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you know, very early in May Governor Inslee laid out his four-phase plan to assist the

citizens, families, communities and businesses in the State of Washington to safely,

carefully and responsibly move forward toward some significant and long-term degree

of “normalcy” in the face of the coronavirus pandemic that has been such a huge

challenge for the entire world. While precise details remain to be discussed and

discerned before being finalized, and while flexibility and contingency continue to be

part of the picture, we do now have a clearer and more substantial picture of the goals we need to strive for, the

steps we need to continue taking, and something of a yardstick by which to measure our progress.

In addition, Archbishop Etienne, assisted by the Archdiocesan Coronavirus Task Force and its various committees, has

been in communication with the civil authorities in Washington State, and has come out with some further guidance

and direction to assist the parishes and faith communities of Western Washington as we move forward in tandem

and in cooperation with our civil society. In this respect, our Archdiocesan guidelines and policies have been in full

cooperation with Governor Inslee’s four-phase plan, broadly speaking.

There is, however, one aspect of Governor Inslee’s plan that Archbishop Etienne has elected not to include in the

policies that apply to Catholic parishes and faith communities in Western Washington. I am referring here to the

Governor’s permission for “drive-through” communal prayer and worship services for churches, synagogues,

mosques and temples. Such forms of religious gatherings and celebrations may be workable for non-Christian and

non-Catholic forms of worship, but our Catholic celebration of the Mass would pose enormous difficulties to such

“drive-through” approaches, both in terms of maintaining and ensuring safety, and in fostering and preserving

respect for the sacred nature of what we are celebrating. For these reasons, Archbishop Etienne has instructed all

pastors and parishioners of the parishes in the Archdiocese of Seattle to continue, for the time being, to celebrate the

Mass only through the various live-stream methods that are currently permitted. No “drive-through” Masses are

allowed. You may have heard of some pastors in our Archdiocese who have publicly announced plans to offer

“drive-through” Masses at their parishes. With all due respect to these pastors, and in recognition of their good

intentions, I nonetheless believe they have spoken prematurely and have inaccurately conveyed what is actually

permitted. If any OLG parishioners have questions or concerns about this issue, please feel free to contact me. I

would be happy to listen to what is on your mind, and to respond as best I can.

Please be assured of my continued prayers and high hopes for all of you. Stay safe!

Easter blessings to all,

Fr. Kevin

Update On Improving The Live Streaming Of Masses In The Church

We are excited to announce that we received a small grant from the CARES Act which we have committed towards improving the quality of our live streaming in the church, especially the sound. This system will also make it possible for us to live stream from two sources: Facebook and Vimeo, which will make our liturgies more accessible to more people, especially those who do not use Facebook. If you would like to support this effort, please contact Michelle Scheving, our Parish Administrator. [email protected]; 206-935-0358

A Video Message From Archbishop Etienne

A video message providing an update to the Archdiocese’s response to the recent developments to our state’s COVID-19 response is available on our website and Facebook sites. He speaks to how those developments, especially related to religious services, apply to our Catholic liturgies, and asks for patience as they continue to work out the details. More to come…

Celebrating The Sacrament Of Reconciliation

Even though we are limited in our ability to celebrate certain sacraments at this time, Fr. Kevin is still available to hear confessions by appointment. Please call the Parish Office, 206-935-0358 or email Fr. Kevin at [email protected]

To Be Free From Worry

Father, help me to be free from worry…

Help me not to worry when things don’t go the way I

expect. Jesus said we are not to fret, not to worry, not to

let our hearts be troubled or afraid. He said, we are to

trust in Him. May it be so in my life, no matter how

impossible things seem. (John 14:1, 27b)

Keep me from worrying about tomorrow, for each day has

enough trouble of its own. When such trouble comes,

help me to place any anxiety in Christ’s hands, because he

loves me. (Matthew 6:34; 1 Peter 5:7)

Help me not to be anxious about anything, but to pray

about everything with thanksgiving, for when I do, you

will give me your peace that surpasses my understanding,

and such peace guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 4:6-7)

Keep my mind steadfast in trusting You and give me Your

perfect peace. As I turn to You, grace me with your peace,

in every way. (Isaiah 26:3; 2 Thessalonians 3:16)

Loving God help me to place every worry in your hands,

where it belongs.

In Jesus’ name, I pray.

Amen

Join U.S. Catholic Bishops In Supporting DACA Recipients

In 2012, the Obama Administration created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children (“Dreamers”) from deportation for a 2-year (renewable) period and allows them work permits. In 2017, the Trump Administration rescinded DACA and legality of this rescission was challenged in courts across the U.S. It is now up to the Supreme Court and a decision is expected soon. If the decision to terminate the program is upheld, more than 700,000 DACA recipients–and their families -will be impacted. This situation is tremendously stressful for everyone it affects. DACA recipients are members of our parishes, members of our priest pool, members of our neighborhoods, and more. Learn more at https://justiceforimmigrants.org/. Please keep DACA recipients and their families in your prayers and pray for the Supreme Court to exercise wisdom.

Celebrate Laudato Si’ Week: Care for Creation

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the encyclical Laudato Si', Pope Francis invites Catholics to participate in Laudato Si' Week, a nine-day global campaign taking place May 16-24. Pray, learn, and act to care for God’s creation. Sign up to receive weekly reflections at http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/environment/

ACT 2020 Census: Be Counted!

In Washington State, $16.7 billion in tax dollars for our communities are at stake, along with our democratic representation in Congress. We cannot afford to miss counting anyone in this census, especially traditionally undercounted people of color, immigrants, tribes, rural communities, and young children. It is said that budgets are moral documents. In this case, the data that informs budgets and allocations of resources has moral implications too! It’s not too late to be counted. Go to https://census2020.gov to be counted and encourage others to do the same!

Catholic Relief Services: Lead The Way

“Concern for education is concern for future generations and for the future of humanity. It is a concern profoundly rooted in hope and it calls for generosity and courage.” ~ Pope Francis Every day in Ethiopia, girls are demonstrating they can play a vital role in building a better world. But they need access to quality education to do so. That's why CRS is committed to ensuring that safe spaces exist where girls can excel and continue to transcend barriers. Visit www.crs.org for more information!

Youth Migrant Project Is On!

The Youth Migrant Project mission trip for teens (graduating 8th graders through graduating seniors) is moving ahead! We are accepting applications and preparing for service in the Skagit Valley from August 10-14. Come learn about migrant life by visiting the camps, working in the fields, and distributing food at the Tri-Parish Food Bank. We will join with youth from St. Anne, St. James and St. George. We will continually monitor health advice as we proceed. If the full program isn’t possible, we hope to find ways to assist essential farmworkers and their families as they labor to put food on our tables! Applications are due by Sunday, May 31. For information, contact Jennifer at [email protected].

Care For Creation Committee “ZOOM” Meeting

Monday, May 18, 6:30-7:30 pm. Our committee comprises people from Holy Rosary and OLG. Join us as we continue to bring to life Pope Francis’ vision in “Laudato Si”. New members, including youth, are always welcome!

GET BACK IN THE LOOP!

Due to coronavirus concerns, this year’s Loop the ‘Lupe Obstacle Course 5K will be postponed to Sunday, August 23rd, 2020, starting at 1:00 p.m. We’re adjusting the schedule based on advice from the Governor’s Office and the City of Seattle Parks and Recreation Department. Barring any major setbacks, large gatherings of 50+ people will be allowed in our state by the first of August, so we’re planning on a fun, end-of-summer event with appropriate physical distancing. Money raised from Loop the ‘Lupe supports a

wide range of social service work at OLG, and WE NEED YOU! Sign up for the race at www.loopthelupe.com, follow @loopthelupe on Facebook, and (if you’re just in it for the t-shirt), consider being a stay-at-home “Lounge Chair Looper,” a new option for this year! Questions? Contact Race Director Brian Callanan at [email protected].

Free Packages Of Vegetable And Flower Seeds

Last year, a parishioner gave out over 500 packages of seeds after mass. This year, he needed to find an alternative to be able to give you these seeds for FREE and we found one! They will be available at the Puget Ridge Edible Park’s first farm stand of the season on Sunday May 17th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at 5265 - 18th Avenue SW. The Puget Ridge Edible Park will also have fresh vegetables. With these seeds, you can grow fresh vegetables which you can eat yourself or share with your neighbors!

Send Us A Group Photo For Our Church Pews!

Just as Fr. Kevin was getting to know names of OLG parishioners, we were no longer able to gather in the church because of the coronavirus. So…we are asking each house-hold (no matter how many people) to send in a group photo—with names—that we will then post in our church pews! This will help Fr. Kevin and give us a visual sense of our community at prayer. Please email your photo to Helen at [email protected]. Let us fill up our church with our faces!!

“OLG: Many Parts, One Body”

Please join us for our All School live stream Mass on May 21st at 9:00 am. We will have special guest speakers. Also save the date for June 3rd Mass and Graduation festivities for our 8th graders. We’ll be doing as much “in person” as we can while staying safe!

If you are able to donate, please consider a contribution to our end of year School Fund Drive to help bridge the gap for our school and families in need due to COVID19. We are continuing registrations for next year with solid class sizes but know there are new and unknown challenges ahead. Thank you also to our in-parish school families for confirming their parish status to help responsibly steward our resources.

This past week you received a letter from

Archbishop Etienne asking for your support

of the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal.

This year’s Annual Catholic Appeal has us reflect upon A Future Full of Hope: Passion for our Faith, Promise for our Future, Care for our Community, and Love for our Family.

The Annual Catholic Appeal goal for our parish is $82,212. As a reminder, any amount in excess of the goal will come back to the parish. If we do not meet our goal, the parish will need to make up the shortfall out of our budget. Last year we committed to using the rebate towards paying off the debt. We also promised if we exceeded the goal, and were able to pay off the debt, we would use this year’s funds towards something new.

Based on parish surveys, we know that ministry and outreach with youth and young adults is needed. We are excited to announce that dollars received in excess of the goal will be used to expand our work with this population by increasing staff hours to include an outreach focus that would be targeted towards high schoolers and young adults in an intentional way.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is such a wonderful, generous and supportive community, and we are proud to say we have exceeded our goal every year!!

Please prayerfully consider giving to the needs of our Archdiocese as we conduct the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal over the next four weeks. Some of you have already made your donation, and we thank you! Your gift helps support more than 60 ministries and services throughout Western Washington.

Because of the current situation, there are three simple ways to for you to donate:

• Mail the pledge card you received in the mail this past week. • Go online to www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate to make a secure

pledge or gift. • Call 1-800-809-4921

**Please note you are an OLG parishioner when pledging or giving
