In this Gospel the love that Jesus reveals through the symbol of the cross is: self-giving, sacrificial, healing, forgiving, in solidarity with the weak, confident in the
power of God. During the hot summer months many of the elderly, especially those who are sick, are not able to find relief from the heat. Please help the society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring respite and hope to them. Thank you for your continued generosity.
Thank you for your generosity to our parish.
Please realize how important it is that you use your envelopes and that you “make-up” your weekly contribution when you are not present at Mass for a particular weekend. We appreciate all that you do for our parish.

Mission Statement Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish
Lawrence ~ Methuen
Our Lady of Good Counsel is a diverse multi-cultural parish serving the Catholic community of Methuen
and Lawrence. We are committed to building a community of faith intent upon God, in unity of mind and heart. We are a family of believers, joined by our Baptism, and nur-tured by the Eucharist. As children of God, we endeavor to bring the love of Christ to all we meet. We are committed to be the Body of Christ, rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church. Together we worship and praise our God. Guided by prayer and the counsel of the Blessed Mother, we minister to the com-munity through faith formation, fellowship, and service. With diligence, compassion, and love we endeavor to help others come to know and love Jesus. Empowered by grace, constant in our mission, we strive to be led by the Holy Spirit.

Dear Parishioners, The bulletin letter returns this 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time to find us in the middle of our five week study of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, which is known as the Bread of Life Discourse. It is a critical part of the bible to read and reread as we try to understand the fullness of the gift that the Eucharist is for us; as we try to understand the Eucharist they way that God would have us understand it. The chapter as a whole is very informative, but also very shocking. We still have a hard time understanding everything that Jesus is saying, which is evidenced by the many differ-ent theologies about Holy Communion that exist among Christians. It was no less shocking when Jesus first spoke the words. Today our Gospel ends with these words: “ Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” For us, Jesus cannot be more clear… His flesh is the Bread of Life, and whoever eats it will live forever. I often go back and read Pope Emeritus Benedict’s 2011 Homily on the Feast of Corpus Christi. It is here that Benedict, drawing from St. Augustine, gives us a clear and important teaching on the Eucharist. He said “Saint Augustine helps us to understand the dynamics of Holy Com-munion when referring to a kind of vision he had, in which Jesus said to him: "I am the food of the mature: grow, then, and you shall eat me. You will not change me into yourself like bodily food; but you will be changed into me" (Confessions, VII, 10, 18). Therefore, while the bodily food is assimilated by the body and contributes to its maintenance, the Eucharist is a different bread: we do not assimilate it, but it assimilates us to it-self, so that we become conformed to Jesus Christ and members of his body, one with Him. This is a decisive passage. Indeed, precisely be-cause it is Christ who, in Eucharistic communion, transforms us into Him, our individuality, in this encounter, is opened up, freed from its self-centeredness and placed in the Person of Jesus, who in turn is immersed in the Trinitarian communion. Thus, while the Eucharist unites us to Christ, we open ourselves to others making us members one of another: we are no longer divided, but one thing in Him. Eucharistic communion unites me to the person next to me, and with whom I might not even have a good relationship, but also to my brothers and sisters who are far away, in every corner of the world. So, because of Holy Communion we not only become one with God, but we also become one with each other. In this way the Eucharist is a foretaste of Heaven. To receive the Eucharist is to change, and if we are fully participating in the Sacrament of the Altar, we never leave Mass the same way we came in. St. Paul in this week’s reading from Ephesians says: “ Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.” Have you ever fought with someone in your family on the way to Mass? Living in a house of 7 children any number of difficulties would present themselves as my Mother tried to round us up to get us out the door to Church. There were many times everyone was screaming, feelings were hurt, and family members were fuming. Going home it was always different; a little more at peace… perhaps a little more patient. Maybe it was just because we had an hour of forced silence which makes for a good cooling off period. Maybe it was just because we HAD TO shake hands at the Sign of PEACE, which would change the dynamic. But, thinking about what Benedict taught, we entered into communion with Jesus Himself in the Eucharist. For a moment of our lives then, we carried that communion into our family life. Sure, it would only last until the next jerk said some-thing stupid (!), but perhaps there is something to learn in it all. Jesus remains with us as long as we want Him to. His Presence, in its fullness in Holy Communion, can be lost completely in a fight over the last jelly doughnut. Or it can be held on to a little bit longer, if one of us is willing to sacrifice. Who will it be? Father Chris
