PAGE 2FROM the PASTOR’S DESKREVEREND Fr. PASCUAL ABAYA IV

The Opening Prayer in the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph says, “O God, who were pleased

to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life, and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards.” How expressive and meaningful these words are as we pray and hope that it will indeed be fulfilled. This prayer expresses a profound message to build God’s Family among ourselves and as a community of faith. Reality presents to us that not all families live in harmony and peace. Joy and gladness are absent. Relationships are not bonded. Many babies are unborn. Children are abandoned. Sibling rivalries exist because of property disputes. And the list goes on and on. It looks like it is becoming a trend as well to live as husbands and wives without even the Sacrament of Matrimony. Our basic understanding of marriage is overturned by laws that legislature pass allowing same sex marriage. Truth to tell, not all marriages work out because of grave reason or reasons. Divorce rate is high. When separation takes place, the Church helps out troubled spouses in the annulment process and help them to be healed from their situation. Family life is weakened and there seems to be no way of restoring family relationships how it was meant from the beginning. When families are weak, society is weak and so is the Church. This is so because it is

always taught that family is the basic unit of society and the Domestic Church. It is supposed to be where values are formed, future is determined and life is nurtured. As quoted in the scriptures above, “the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom and the favor of God was upon him.” Could we just say that this Child whose birth we celebrated days ago just grew up by himself? No! He had a “makuakane” who was always looking at the welfare of his Son and wife. He protected them with love and care. He was always listening to God’s voice to keep his family together. Also, this child had a caring and nurturing “makuahine” who herself experienced the pangs of birth. He had a mother who nursed him and always with him even till his last days on earth. He had a “Makua” so loving and self-giving. This feast as part of the Christmas celebration instills in us our dreams and aspirations to live in a family where we can all experience love and comfort. It calls us also to pray fervently that God may bring light and peace to those who had been troubled. It also invites us to make our families bond together in the love and examples of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Thus, we make our house a home, a dwelling place of goodness, of love, of joy and of peace. Let us remember, charity, the crown of all virtues, begin at home. If we look into the life of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, there is hope to make things right and be able to build God’s family. ╬

MINISTRY CORNER“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.”PAGE 3

Each week for the past five months, ministries and affiliated groups were featured in the bulletin. The

articles consisted of not only photos of members but also description of ministries and testimonies of members. Through these articles, we got to know about the ministries’ and groups’ activities wherein the members generously share their time, talent and treasure. The testimonies mentioned in the articles relayed the members’ sincere reasons why they joined the ministries. Majority of the members shared the same reason which is to give back to the Lord the gifts He has given them by sharing them in turn to others. This is truly a confirmation of who we really are - stewards of God’s gifts and blessings. “ Much wll be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Luke 12:48. Stewardship is a way of life. Who we are and what we have is God’s gift to us. It is our responsibility to take good care of all what God has given us by using them wisely and sharing them generously. “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10. Gifts of time, talent and treasure are given to us to bless others.

SCHOOL NEWS“Together with Christ what we believe, we can achieve.”

PAGE 4

Our Lady of Good Counsel School provides a variety of activities, events, and celebrations to

build the Catholic Identity of the school. The school is a community built on faith where Jesus Christ is the focal point and recognizes and maintains practices that support the standards of Catholic Identify- Mission and Philosophy, Prayer and Sacraments, Curriculum, Catechist Certification, Parents as the Primary Educators, Service, Signs and Sacramentals, and Evangelization . To aid in faith building, students lead the school in morning prayers, participate in prayers before class begins, contribute to the school’s monthly altar theme, work with their families on Family Scriptures every weekend, celebrate weekly school Mass & prayer services, participate in outreach programs to practice social justice, perform in the school’s Advent/Christmas Program and May Day Program (Crowning of Mary), view the Stations of the Cross Dramatization led by the fifth through eighth graders, celebrate Our Lady Of Good Counsel Feast Day, participate in a theme focused monthly altar display, participate in a monthly Rosary Devotion, celebrate Reconciliation during Advent and Lent, celebrate First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion (grade 2), and sponsor 3rd Saturday Parish Vigil Mass. The school’s outreach programs allow the entire community a chance to practice social justice and an opportunity to witness the Gospel message in action. Programs include donating money to poor families, collecting donations for Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Charities and Catholic Pro-

Life Organizations, seniors outreach, replenishing the parish food pantry during Thanksgiving and Christmas . Students are often asked to consider current events and think of ways to serve and

practice being active Christians. Recently, the school held a warm clothing drive for families of Northern California who lost their homes by fire in October. The school loaded eight large shipping boxes with warm clothing for all ages and received word that every piece was claimed and appreciated by many families. The school’s Student Council organized a Christmas drive to support the Cross Catholic Outreach: Box of Joy. Students were able to experience gift giving and sacrifice as a wonderful, meaningful part of the Advent

season . Each class filled 2-3 shoe boxes with gifts for children who live in countries of poverty. By packing these Christmas gift box es and sponsoring the cost of its shipment, the school celebrated the joy of giving. The school is proud to sponsor projects like these because it allows Catholic Identity to grow and the students are given opportunities to be of service.

When Jesus is presented in the Temple, our Blessed Mother formally offers Him to God’s service without reservation. It is a service that Simeon prophetically foretells: a service to God that will turn the old laws and cultural norms upside down. Are we destined to hold on to old habits and customs tightly or like Jesus, are we willing to serve the Lord and proclaim the Gospel in new and creative ways?

BISHOP LARRY SILVA

LITURGICALCATECHESIS by Rev. Alfred Omar B. GuerreroParochial Vicar/Director of Liturgy

Merry Christmas! Yes, it is still Christmas! While the secular world start packing away the Christmas

decorations and have their “after” Christmas sales, the Church continues to celebrate the mystery of the incarnation of God. In fact, this weekend is within the Christmas Octave or eight-day period during which a liturgical commemoration is CELEBRATED! So, it is fitting to greet one another a “Merry Christmas.” While we wait for the Second Coming of Christ in glory, we celebrate the coming of Christ in mystery through the celebration of the Eucharist. In our last discussion on the structure of the Mass, its elements, and its parts” we ended with the Great Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer. We now enter into the discussion of the Communion Rite. The Communion Rite includes the praying of the Lord’s Prayer, the Rite of Peace, the fractioning of the Eucharistic Bread, and Holy Communion itself. “In the Lord’s Prayer a petition is made for daily bread, which for Christians means principally the Eucharistic Bread, and entreating also purification from sin, so that what is holy may in truth be given to the holy.” The faithful prays the Lord’s Prayer along with the Priest and he

alone adds the embolism which “asks for deliverance from the power of evil for the whole community of the faithful” (GIRM, 81). Following the Lord’s Prayer and before receiving the Holy Sacrament, “the Church entreats peace and unity for herself and for the whole human family” by expressing to each other their bond of unity and mutual charity (82). This sign of peace is not a time to catch up or greet someone across the church, but a symbolic gesture of communion with each other. So it is appropriate to only offer the sign to those who are nearest to you.

Word of the Week: Solemnity- A category of liturgical day that is higher than a feast or memorial. The

celebration of a solemnity begins with Evening Prayer I on the preceding day. Some solemnities also have their own Vigil Mass, to be used on the evening of the preceding day if Mass is celebrated at that time. The two greatest solemnities are Easter and the Nativity of the Lord, each of which has an octave. On solemnities, the Glory to God in the Highest and the Profession of Faith are prescribed at Mass. (Word of the Week from A Glossary of Liturgical Terms by Dennis C. Smolarski, SJ, 2017)

God has made it clear that He is not interested in simply watching over us from afar. He wants to be intimately involved with every aspect of our lives. This is exactly why He became a human being in the person of Jesus. This is why the risen Jesus now makes Himself available to us in an intimate way by feeding us with His own Body and Blood. It is still such an awesome message that it is hard to believe. Yet we have been given the gift of faith so that we can be prophetic and angelic voices that proclaim to a lost world that God-is-with-us, Emmanuel! The annunciation that God takes flesh and dwells among us in a kingdom that lasts forever is now ours to announce with joy to all the world.
