  • The Gospels record the many times during His public ministry whenJesus went away to pray to the Father. The Gospels also tell of thetimes when Jesus spoke of doing the Will of the Father. The activitiesare intrinsically linked.

When the disciplines asked Jesus how to pray He taught them to saythe Our Father (Luke 11:2-4; Matthew 6:9-13). As a twelve year oldboy He spoke in the Temple of being about His Father’s business. Inthe Garden of Gethsemane He said to His disciples ‘sit here while I goover there and pray’ and asked them on three separate occasions tostay awake with Him. He then prayed saying the first time ‘My Fatherif it is possible let this cup pass from Me; yet, not what I want, butwhat you want’ (Matthew 26:39) and on the second and third times‘My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done’(Matthew 26:42).

The Church teaches that prayer is an uplifting of the mind and heart to God.When introducing the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in2005 Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said that it presents Christ imitated in prayer as themodel and master of our prayerful attitude to the Father. The Compendium explains about forms of prayer -blessing and adoration; petition and intercession; thanksgiving and praise - and expressions of prayer -vocal; meditation (reflection which begins in the Word of God in the Bible); contemplation (simply gazingupon God in silence and love).

DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU John 2:15

  • Our Blessed Lady is mankind’s greatest proponent of prayerfulness anddedication to the Will of God. This is seen in Mary’s unhesitating response

‘here I am Lord, let it be with me according to your word’ (Luke 1:38), onbeing told by the Angel Gabriel in Nazareth that she was to give birth

to the Son of God. The words of the Angelus and the Hail Mary aredaily reminders of Mary’s saying yes to God, Mary’s fiat. At theWedding in Cana Mary said to the servants ‘do whatever He tellsyou’ (John 2:5). Mary’s words, recorded in St Luke’s Gospel, to hercousin Elizabeth, whom she visited in the hill country in Judeabefore the birth of John the Baptist, provide the text of theMagnificat.

Our Blessed Lady has appeared many times down the years, forexample in Lourdes, rue du Bac in Paris, Guadalupe, Fatima and Knock.

There were recurring themes during the apparitions. Our Lady hasasked for a return to God, for prayers for peace, for the Rosary to be said,

for penance and on some occasions for a church to be built.

LET US TRY TO FOLLOW OUR BLESSED LADY’S EXAMPLE, AND SAY YES TO GOD IN OUR LIVES

    SAYING THE ROSARY

To recite the Rosary is to contemplate with Mary the deathand resurrection of Jesus, her Son.

The Rosary is Mary’s memories. The memories of Jesusimpressed upon her heart were always with her, leading her

to reflect on the various moments of her life at her Son’sside. By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a

quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individualsto meditate on the mysteries of the Lord’s life as seen

    through the eyes of Mary.

No one knows Christ better than Mary; no one can introduceus to a profound knowledge of His mystery better than His mother. If Jesus is the Way, Mary shows us the Way.

The Rosary is both meditation and supplication. It is a prayerful presentation of the mysteries of Christ.

  • The Miraculous Medal

The Miraculous Medal originated in a request by Our Blessed Lady during an apparition to

the then Sr Catherine Labouréin the Chapel in rue du Bac, Paris in 1830.

The design of the oval Medalwas shown to St Catherine Labouré by Our Lady

who also gave instructions about its use.The front of the Medal shows Our Lady

standing on a globe crushing the head of a serpent;the words ‘O Mary conceived without sin,

pray for us who have recourse to thee’ are inscribedin the perimeter. On the reverse side there is a Crosswith a large M at the base. Under the Cross there are

two hearts – one surrounded by thornsand the other pierced by a sword.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
