Coaching Accreditation?

• ‘Accreditation’ simply means the giving of approval or credit by an awarding body.

Awarding bodies for Coaching

• The International Coach Federation (ICF),

• The Association for Coaching (AC)

• The European Mentoring and Coaching Council, (EMCC)

• etc!

Coaching ‘accreditation’?

• The professional coaching organisations – e.g. AC, ICF, EMCC offer accreditation to individual members,

• ICF’s accreditation is getting certified through their ‘Credentialing’ process

• The professional bodies each provide a list of accredited (or approved) coaching training course providers.

The ICF

• The ICF was founded in 1995, created Core Competencies and built a Code of Ethics.

• ICF also defined curriculum standards (accreditation), to ensure consistency in coach training, and developed an ICF Credentialing system, requiring renewal every 3 years.

• 3 levels of membership: Coach member (completed or enrolled in 60 hour coach specific training) / Holds an ICF credential.

• Membership is around 21,000.

The EMCC

• The European Mentoring & Coaching Council• Founded in 1992. • An EMCC in Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark,

Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, UK.

• Affiliates – They also have direct members from other European countries (and from around the world) where an EMCC has not yet been established.

• 5,000+ members in 67 countries.

General Market Perspective• “In an industry where there is no restriction, anyone can call

themselves a Coach or create a programme to train and certify

Coaches.” (Brennan & Whybrow in Passmore, 2010, Ed 2)

The Market Perspective

• More new entrant coaches to the market - How does a Coach stand out from 40,000 Business Coaches in the world? (Bresser, 2008-09)

• Accreditation strengthens the profession by setting the standards relating to the quality of work a buyer can expect (Amstat, 2007)

• Certification by an independent professional body gives the Coach, as well as the public, an unbiased measure of skill that ensures both that the schools are training well and the student is learning well (Krigbaum, 2006).

ICF – reasons why!• ICF research has revealed several reasons coaches benefit from getting

a credential. According to:

- the 2012 ICF Global Coaching Study, credentialed coaches reported a higher-than-average income worldwide compared to non-credentialed-coaches, with the exception of the Middle East and Africa. - the 2010 ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study, clients who worked with an ICF Credentialed Coach were more likely to be satisfied with their coaching experience and recommend coaching to others. - the 2010 ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study, 84% of adult consumers who had experienced a coaching relationship reported that it was important for coaches to hold a credential.

Personal Coaching Approach

• Explore and describe what informs your coaching and how this manifests in your individual approach to coaching – the essence of how you work.

• Describe how you approach your coaching from beginning through middle to end

• Do not just replicate a coaching model!• Different word counts depending on level

Case Study

• Here you describe how you have worked with a client over time, giving the context, and your coaching process from start to finish and your reflections and learnings.

• You need to gain your client’s agreement and a signed form needs to be submitted

• The word count varies according to level applied for.

Coaching Fitness to Practice

• At Foundation level, write a 500 word critical reflection on your coaching practice, link this to your self assessment and coaching development plan

• All other levels, submit a Recording, of 30-40 minutes of you coaching a client.

• Show evidence of self awareness. Use your discoveries and learnings from putting your application together and from external evidence and feedback.

• Meet the minimum Supervision requirements for number of months in supervision

• Complete the coach supervision log• Complete the coach learning log in the

Coaching supervision report• Gain Supervisor agreement to these 2 logs,
