NEW POLL QUESTION
Have you visited one of our District's local Waterfalls
during the last two years?
This poll generated our most interest to date. It is great to see so many
of our readers have made the move to Tablet technology. This trend is also
being duplicated in some of our local schools.
If you have a poll question you would like asked, please let us know.

Artworkz are pleased to announce that after nearly three years of searching,
involving many man-hours by numerous people (both in the field and behind
research desks), the long-lost Elephant Rock has been re-discovered!
On the 20th April 2013, local resident Marcus Horn (son of Rubicon identify John Horn)
re-discovered Elephant Rock. He did this in just two hours, during his first solo search. Marcus was
armed with an early version of our Artworkz 'Elephant Rock' Factsheet and two generations of local
knowledge. He was able to theorise its location and travel straight to its hidden resting spot.
Marcus and his father John first heard about Elephant Rock from local Eildon identity Allan Layton
just days before, when Allan had given them the Elephant Rock Factsheet, as he sought their help to
find the rock.
On Sunday 5th May, there was a verification expedition to the rock that included Marcus Horn, John
Horn, Ron Cooper, Chris Lees and myself (David Hibbert). We were able to photographically verify
the find. My wife (Debbie) who had always been central to the search, was unable to attend due to
injuries sustained during a fall the previous weekend, whilst in the bush looking for this big rock!
The rock's location cannot be disclosed for public safety reasons, as getting to and climbing the rock
are considered too dangerous. We have made the Department of Environment & Primary Industries
(DEPI) aware of this historic find and given them the position of the rock.

Artworkz are hopeful that one day
the rock may become part of a
beautiful bushland walk that may
include other natural features, though
we recognise that this is not currently
possible due to the high cost of
providing safe access to the area.
I would like to extend a big thanks to
the those who were involved in this
long journey. In rough order of
involvement, this includes:
Rod Falconer
Sandra Cumming
Debbie Hibbert
Lawrence Hood
Ron Cooper
Kelly Petersen
James Cowell
Chris Lees
Peter Tate
Brent Armstrong
Leisa Lees
James Cowell
Kathie Maynes
David Bowdern

The discovery has actually made
history in its own right and stands as
a tribute to those who cherish our
heritage. It further shows what can
be done when people work together.
I now look forward to getting into our next historic mystery challenge. It is on the Shire of
Murrindindi, it has been lost for over 120 years, it may be of importance to our expanding
nature based tourism platform, it is mysterious, and it is currently lost! It will take a team
effort, including lots of feet on the ground - to find this mysterious gem of nature!
We will have more for you - our eSplash readership - over the next few months.

Black Spur Healesville
A George Rose Series Postcard showing a horse and cart with six people on board near Healesville on the Black Spur. Two under the canopy, and three adults and one child are visible at the front. Photographer George Rose was born in 1862 and was one of nine children. He married in 1887, and remarried in 1941 ten years after his first wife died. George died of colon cancer in 1842. This postcard was purchased on eBay and has now been returned to the community less than three weeks later.

Derek Falconer was a local Snobs Creek photographer who lived at Snobs Creek and worked at the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery. Derek loved photography, and took a large number of photographic images that have now become part of our district's
historic records.
His Leica IIIc D.P.R. was built at Wetzlar, Germany. D.R.P. stands for Deutsches Reichspatent - the name for German patents before May 1945.
The Leica IIIc was built from 1940 to 1951
with a 35mm rangefinder. The shutter speed ranged from 1 to 1/500th of a
second. It was a very successful camera, with over 130,000 units being sold.

Adobe Inc has upset some loyal customers by announcing that they will be moving to a subscription based model for most of their professional Graphical software products. What this essentially means is that you will rent their software monthly and never actually own it. Currently I only purchase every second release of their design suite, so based on their new subscription model, I would suffer a large financial loss over a three year period. The Adobe brand is taking flack from its customers on the internet news sites and forums, and their stock fell directly after the announcement. It is unsure if Adobe will back away from the strategy, though many will find it hard to pay for software that they will never own. Currently the most successful software model on the planet is one based around high quality cheap software that you buy and own. This strategy made successful by Apple is also used by Google and Microsoft via their App Stores. Many loyal supporters are saying they will move to competitor's products now, though these are sadly in short supply. Yesterday I purchased the last 'Pay-and-own' edition of the Adobe Creative Suite, and I will use this edition for as long as I can. Hopefully by then, an alternative will exist that I can move too. Sorry Adobe, but you have lost my heart! Even if Adobe does reverse its decision, it is evident to many that the current CEO cares less about loyal customers than all previous CEOs have. Many are calling for him to be sacked, and if shares continue to drop, shareholders will likely be amongst this group also!

To help support tourism and to remind locals of why we love our
amazing district, we will be endeavouring to release a free nature
desktop image each month. All images will be taken locally and
released freely by photographers who wish to share their skills
with the community. Click the image (right) for your download.
