Toyota Motor Corporation is Japan’s number-oneauto manufacturer and has experienced significantgrowth in global sales over the last two decades ofthe 20th century. A key issue facing Toyota is thedesign of its global production and distributionnetwork. Part of Toyota’s global strategy is to openfactories in every major market it serves. Toyotamust decide what the production capability ofeach of the factories will be, as this has asignificant impact on the desired distributionsystem.

At one extreme, each plant is equipped only forlocal production. At the other extreme, each plantis capable of supplying every market. Prior to 1996,Toyota used specialized local factories for eachmarket. After the Asian financial crisis in1996/1997, Toyota focused on redesigning itsplants so that they could be shifted quickly toexporting to markets that remain strong. Toyotacalls this strategy “global complementation”.

Whether to be global or local is also an issue forToyota’s parts plants: Should they be designed forlocal consumption or should there be few partsplants globally that supply multiple assemblyplants? For any global manufacture like Toyota, several questions arise regarding the configurationand capability of the supply chain:

Where should the plants be located, and what degree of flexibility should be built into each? What capacity should each plant have?

Where should the plants be located, and what degree of flexibility should be built into each? What capacity should each plant have?

Should plants be able to produce for all markets or only specific contingency markets?

How should markets be allocated to plants, and how frequently should this allocation be revised?

What kind of flexibility should be built into the distribution system?

Just in Time

Centros de distribución

Concesionarias

How should this flexible investment be valued?

What actions may be taken during product design to facilitate this flexibility?
