Welcome to the Spring/Summeredition of the Origin Storageproduct guide. Amazing to thinkthat Origin has been in existencefor ten years, I cannot begin toimagine where time goes andhow we have managed to changethe shape of the business duringour brief history.

As with any Storage related business we have seen some significantchanges within our industry and continue to play a part in one of the most exciting sectors within the Computer Industry. Origin has concentrated on enhancing systems within the Serverand notebook arena and continues to focus on extending the life of your computer.

By introducing new solutions that offer hardware data encryption tonotebooks or securing a last time purchase on SCSI drives Origin isconstantly looking at ways to reduce budget and increase ROI.

The appetite for storing electronic data continues to increase andthe need for data encryption is continuing to cause headaches forCorporate and Local Government. At Origin we have focussed onencrypting notebooks with solutions that work alongside existingpolicies and welcome the opportunity to assist in this critical areaof your business.

Over the coming months the enterprise hard disk drive marketfaces the biggest shift in technology for over a decade. Within Q22011 major disk manufacturers will end of life 3.5” enterprise classhard disks with SCSI and 3.5” 15K SAS both at the end of theirlives. Again Origin will commit to stock to allow 3.5” 15K SAS andSCSI to be available for the coming years enabling corporate usersto upgrade their systems.

Why Hardware Encryption?

Products with hardware based cryptographic chips manage theencryption keys and perform the encrypting/decrypting routines.This means that your PCs processor will not be slowed down and the products run more securely than any software basedencryption system.

What Is AES?

The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a symmetric-keyencryption standard adopted by the U.S. Government. The AESciphers have been analysed extensively and are now usedworldwide as the default standard for encrypting data.

Do I Need 128 Bit Or 256 Bit?

This will depend largely on the type of data to be secured and anyregulatory requirements you must conform to. To secure generalcompany documents a 128 Bit device may be suitable however ifyou are securing financial information, 3rd party details, medicalhistory or classified data then a 256 Bit device would meet yourrequirements.

What Is FIPS 140-2?

Federal Information Processing Standard 140-2(FIPS 140-2) is a standard that describes US Federal government requirementsthat IT products should meet for Sensitive, but unclassified data.FIPS 140-2 certification has become a widely used method for organisations and their associated regulators to determine if an encrypted product is suitable for use by themselves and/or members.

Overview

Available in capacities from 8GB to 32GB Origin’s USB2.0 Flash Key features integrated 256 Bit AES hardwareencryption to provide the highest levels of security fordata on the move.

When connected a read-only CD emulating partition, whichcontains the authentication tool, allows the user to enter theirpassword and gain read/write access to the encrypted datapartition. No access to the data partition is permissible withoutentering the correct password and repeated attempts to accessthe data partition with the incorrect password results in theCryptokey being erased permanently and the Flash Key beingreformatted, making previous data unrecoverable.

The SafeErase function allows the Origin USB 2.0 Flash Key to be securely erased, removing all traces of data, to protect againstrecovery of data deleted.

No drivers to install allows for true “Plug & Play” operation in any USB1.x or USB 2.0 port. Support for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and MacOS is provided via the cross platform authentication tool. Administrativerights are not required to unlock the encrypted data partition.

What Is Network Attached Storage?

Network Attached Storage (NAS) is used to describe storagedevices that are accessed over a computer network rather thanbeing directly connected to the computer. NAS devices enablemultiple users and computers to share the same storage spaceat once.

What Is iSCSI?

iSCSI allows hosts, such as servers, to use all or part of a storagedevice like a locally attached hard drive. Because iSCSI is an IPbased networking standard you can access the storage deviceover the LAN, WAN or even the internet.

Using electronic supporttools where available we can perform remote diagnostics, takingcontrol of your computer to view first-hand what errors arebeing encountered. When the issue cannot be resolved remotely,we'll send a fully trained Origin Technician the next business dayafter your call has been logged to your location.
