The Director-General is presenting the report once a year at the January session in accordance with the wishes of the Board. The report is prepared in the revised format approved in resolution EB59.R2. Changes in panel membership 1. Membership of the 44 expert advisory panels totalled 2630 at the end of 1977 (as compared with 2631 members in 1976). A breakdown of the changes which have occurred during the year is given in Table 1. Detailed information on membership of the panels (alphabetical list of experts, year of birth, sex, nationality) can be made available in the form of a computer print-out should the Board so request. Geographical distribution 2. In order to indicate the trend of the distribution of panel members between regions, Table 2 gives figures and percentages at five year intervals since 1965, and for the last two years. Membership by country in each region is shown in Tables 3 to 8. It will be seen that, in keeping with programme trends and priorities, representation from developing countries has continued to increase. 3. The Executive Board at its fifty-sixth session in June 1975 reviewed the subject of geographical distribution of expert panels when considering the special report by the Director-General.1 The questions raised at that time will be considered further by the Board in the context of its organizational study on "The role of WHO expert advisory panels and committees and collaborating centres in meeting the needs of WHO regarding expert advice and in carrying out technical activities of WHO" (provisional agenda item 27.2). Meetings 4. During 1977 meetings of the following Expert Committees were held: Expert Committee on the Use of Ionizing Radiation and Radionuclides on Human Beings for Medical Research, Teaching and Non-Medical Purposes (8 members) Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (12 members, 6 WHO experts) Expert Committee on Specifications for Pharmaceutical Preparations (8 members) Expert Committee on Chemistry and Specifications of Insecticides (8 members) Expert Committee on the Training and Utilization of Auxiliary Personnel for Rural Health Teams in Developing Countries (4 members) Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (10 members) 1 WHO Official Records, No. 228, 1975, Part 1, Annex 1.

33 different countries, selected from 21 panels (9 members were unable to attend).
