This past week the Red Hatters had their monthly luncheon at El Rodeo Restaurant. There were 21 of us eating, talking, having a great time. When it came time to pay the bill the waitrees said that a gentlemen had just left and paid his bill and our lunch bill. What a wonderful surprise! There are still a lot of good people out there and especially in Chiloquin. Thank you sir, you made our day and we will not forget to Pay It Forward.

Chiloquin Food Pantry is graciously accepting donations of cans to help support our program. Please contact Kathy Bettles at 541-783-0972.

In fact, 44,000 units of blood are needed every day to meet these needs. • A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. (2006) • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O. • More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

FREE MENDING LIBRARY “A stitch in time saves nine.” Mending while you wait: tears repaired, patches applied, buttons replaced, hems redone…..etc. Community Center Lobby, February 11th 11 AM to 2 PM I like to mend and have done it for friends and family for years. Now that I’m retired, I’d like to share my small talent with my community as well. Hope to see you there.

EXERCISE: Each Friday at 10 to 11 am - Tai Chi with Sandi Selk. See WEEKLY activities section for details.

Yoga practice (and I emphasize the word practice) will be held on Wednesdays starting January 21st at 10am at the Chiloquin Community Center. Anyone interested, just show up on Wednesday with your yoga mat, a towel and or blanket, and if desired, a strap and yoga blocks. I so enjoyed Sandi’s Tai Chi practice and thought

perhaps a yoga practice would be nice. Since I am way over 55, the practice is geared toward those over 50. No charge, but donations for CVIP will be gratefully accepted.

Any questions, call Lorna 541-783-2238.

GOOD NEWS: Sierra Service Project is returning to Chiloquin!!! Request for needed repairs forms will be here at the end of February. First team comes in April to finish the fence on 442 going out of town. BAD NEWS: The wood stove in the Methodist Church Parsonage (sponsor of SSP here) is missing its insides (ahem-they WERE there when it was rented) and needs a chimney sweep. We need either a new (used, certified, OK) stove, or donations to fix the one that's there AND a sweep. All are TAX DEDUCTIBLE. For more information: [email protected] subject:SSP

The Klamath County Board of Commissioners encourage citizens to participate in a town hall style meeting on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015 at 6 pm. The Commissioners will comment on this year's challenges, as well as take questions on a variety of topics. "We really hope the community uses this as an opportunity to come learn about this year's challenges and ask any questions they would like information on," says Commissioner Jim Bellet. The town hall will take place in the Klamath County Government Center, room 219, on Main Street in Klamath Falls. Those asking questions will have up to three minutes to speak. "Government works better when citizens are involved and engage their elected leaders, we encourage people to attend" says Commissioner Tom Mallams. For more information contact [email protected] or call 541-883-5100.

Before settlement in the Basin, it's thought annual migration numbers were about 8 million waterfowl stopping here. Now, it's between 1 and 2 million, with 300 to 400 eagles. Numbers today vary with Crater Lake area snow amounts, with most refuge water coming from Annie Creek and Wood River drainages. Even though

other areas feeding water into the Basin, like Goosenest, are 8,000ish feet, they don't contribute much water. If Crater Lake has 44' of snow, we'll get 2 million birds and 900 eagles in the Basin. If Crater Lake has 10' of

snow, we'll get less than 1 million birds and 300-400 eagles, with 300ish eagles anticipated this year. Eagles arrive with the swans in January, with highest concentrations of both from about Feb. 1 to about March 15, the period called "early migration". The waterfowl are heading to British Columbia to nest after wintering in

the Sacramento valley.

Facebook Page:

The estimated number of Bald Eagle nesting pairs left in the U.S. was 487 when the species was put on the endangered species list in the 1960s. In 2007, they were delisted & at that time the estimated number of

nesting pairs had recovered to 10,000. Although delisted, they are still protected under federal law. The maximum fine for poaching a Bald Eagle is $500,000. Primo, Sec, Quadra, & Trip are a quartet of Bald Eagles who have been non-releasable Animal Ambassadors for 15 years or more. They were originally cared for by a rehabilitator in Sprague River, Oregon until 2010 when she lost her battle with cancer. That’s when the

eagles came to Badger Run. Primo is a male who is about 37 years old. He came to rehab when he was around 10 with a broken wing after being hit by a car. He recuperated well & soon flew away from his open topped exercise pen. He got hungry

one day, flew back in for lunch, & then left again. After doing this for a few years he decided to stay on permanently. Sec, Trip, & Quadra are all partial wing amputees & cannot fly. We’re not sure if Sec was hit by a car, but we know that Trip & Quadra had their wings blown off by shotgun blasts. Sadly, no perpetrators were

ever caught. This foursome spends their days sunning, sitting in a row on their perch, waiting for a caretaker to show up with

something yummy to eat. They also enjoy splashing about in their kiddy wading pool. It’s February 2nd and the Great Horned Owls (GHOs) are already in the mood for love. Yes, these crazy kids actually mate and lay their eggs as early as late January. Eggs take about 28 days to hatch and the young might be cared for up to 5 months. These baby owls are eating machines that can EACH eat a MINIMUM of 12 mice a day until their growth levels out. An adult GHO eats about 3-4 mice per day. That's a lot of groceries for GHO parents to bring home. So Mom & Dad may up their game a bit to bring home bigger food items so they don't have to do as much hunting. Think skunks, rabbits, and even porcupines, but also small dogs and cats. GHOs also don't build their own nests preferring to take over old hawk, heron, crow, or squirrel nests, and even better, hollow trees.

US National Weather Service Medford Oregon After a dry and foggy ending to January, a wet beginning to February is expected. An influx of moisture, along with some small upper level disturbances, will give us a chance for rain on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday next week with a chance of heavy precipitation on Friday into the weekend when a cold front moves through Southern Oregon and Northern California. Although the exact impacts remain uncertain at this point, rainfall will make contribute to wet roads which may be slippery. In addition, the heavy rainfall could create concerns on the horizon for some river flooding as well as flash flooding and debris flow along burn scars. Furthermore, conditions may become windy at times with the highest chances for strong winds occurring near the coast and East Side throughout the week. At this time, snow levels are forecast to be above 6,000 feet with these events; so no snow accumulation is expected at the higher passes. The exception, however, is Crater Lake which could see around 6-10 inches of snowfall during the early parts of the week through Wednesday.

Williamson River Delta Restoration - Mel Schroeder - KBCNPSO Meeting

When February 05, 2015 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Location DOW 252 (Dow Center for Health

Professions) on the OIT campus. Lecture Registration – Free registration for

everyone.

The 7,440 acre Williamson River Delta Preserve is located on the mouth of the Williamson River, along Upper Klamath and Agency Lakes, near Chiloquin, Oregon. The area was once dominated by emergent wetlands. Beginning in the 1940s, levee construction and subsequent wetland drainage allowed the area to be used for farming and cattle pasture. Since 1999, The Nature Conservancy has worked to hydrologically reconnect the Delta to adjacent waterbodies and establish native wetland vegetation on about 5,500 acres. Mel Schroeder will discuss the process of restoring wetland, riparian and upland habitats, including using explosives to breach levees throughout the Delta.

FCE (Family and Community Education) Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Call the number below for an application or fill out an on-line application at www.getsmartoregon.org. It will be the most rewarding hour you ever volunteer! Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
