Balfour Gardiner, one of the most original and outstanding of British composers, though chiefly known through his highly effective larger works for orchestra, chorus and chamber music, is also the author of many notable piano pieces. (c) A FRAGMENT ("WHEN THE SUN'S GONE DOWN") A. Walter Kramer (New York Citv, September 20, 1890) (d) "JUBA" DANCE R. Nathaniel Belt (Born, Drummondsville, Canada, 1882) "Juba" Dance is one of five numbers from a Suite, ("In the Bottoms") picturing scenes and moods peculiar to Negro life in the river bottoms of the South. "Juba" is the stamping on the ground with the foot, and following it come two staccato pats of the hands. R. Nathaniel Dett is one of the most gifted of contemporary choral composers, as well as an ardent student and arranger of Negro folk-music. VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY PAGANINI, Op. 35, Book 1 , Johannes Brahms (May 7, 1833-April 3, 1897) (a) "EL ALBAICIN" (FROM "IBERIA") . Isaac Albente (May 29, 1861") "El Albaicin" is the gypsy quarter of Granada. (b) COUNTRY GRANDEES Percy Grainger (Brighton, Australia, July 8, 1892) Based on an English Morris Dance from the collection of Cecil J. Sharp. (c) "ONE MORE D A Y , M Y JOHN" Set by Grainger Based on a sailor's chanty (working song) Rung to the following words: "One more day, my John. Oh, rock and roll me over One more day: One more dav." (d) LEPRECHAUN'S DANCE Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (September 30. 1852) Percy Grainger A leprechaun is a tiny man-fairy clad in knee breeches and a top hat (e) MARCH-JIG, "MAGUIRE'S KICK" . . " . . . . . Stanford-Craingcr Both the above Irish Dances were composed for orchestra by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, and arranged for piano by Percy Grainger, and are based on folk tunes from the great "Petrie Collection of Ancient Irish Music." T H E U N I V E R S I T Y M U S I C A L SOCIETY" is organized under an Act of the State of Michigan, providing for the incorporation of Associations not for pecuniar}'- profit. Its purpose is "to cultivate the public taste for music." All fees are placed at the lowest possible point compatible with sound business principles, the financial side serving but as a means to an educational and artistic end, a fact duly recognized by the Treasury Depart­ment of the United States by exempting from War- tax , admissions to concerts given under its auspices, and by the United States Postoffice Department in admitting its publications to second-class privileges.
