VANCOUVER OPERA ORCHESTRAis one of only two professional opera orchestras in Canada and has been recognized as a formidable musical force. Formed in 1977, the Orchestra’s first performance was for the production of Massenet’s Le Roi de Lahore, starring Joan Sutherland and

conducted by Richard Bonynge. Several players who were in the pit for Le Roi de Lahore are still members of the VO Orchestra today. Since it was formed, the VO Orchestra has played more than a hundred opera productions, numerous stage productions, and many concerts. This season, members of the orchestra will play for Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker. The Orchestra has strong ties to the community: many of its players are professional educators and active freelance musicians in the Lower Mainland. Collectively, they make an important contribution to the cultural life of our city.

THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA OPERA ENSEMBLEwas founded by Canadian lyric coloratura Nancy Hermiston in 1995. Beginning with a core of seven performers, Miss Hermiston has built the program to a 90-member company, performing three main productions at UBC every season, six Opera Tea

Concerts, and several engagements with local community partners. New this year is an intimate event, in cooperation with the Peter Wall Institute and the UBC Centennial committee. In this series we explore how the magic happens on the concert and operatic stage. This is an opportunity to talk to singers, coaches, directors and conductors to see who the ‘Singer behind the Song’ really is and what goes in to making that ‘Song’ happen. The Ensemble’s mission is to educate young, gifted opera singers, preparing them for international careers. Past main stage productions have included Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Suor Angelica, La Bohème, Dido and Aeneas, The Merry Widow, The Bartered Bride, Manon, Eugene Onegin, Florence: Lady with the Lamp, Dream Healer, Falstaff, Don Giovanni, Cendrillon, Albert Herring, the Western Canadian premiere of Harry Somers’ Louis Riel, The Crucible, Die Lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow), Rusalka, Così fan tutte, Dialogues des Carmélites, and Carmen. The 2013–2014 season presented Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann as well as Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen in the Old Auditorium, and in the Chan Centre, Nino Rota’s The Florentine Straw Hat, The Bartered Bride, Le Nozze di Figaro and La Traviata. UBC will be 100 years old in 2015/2016. The Opera Ensemble celebrates these 100 years by presenting Jules Massenet’s Manon, Johann Strauss’ A Night in Venice and Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As well they will tour to the Okanagan, Beijing, China, Germany and the Czech Republic to celebrate UBC’s Centenary. We hope you will join us in these celebrations!
