Come Aboard Fame! Please join us as we welcome Capt. Michael Rutstein as he tells stories of the Fame schooner. Fame is a full-scale replica of the first American privateer schooner to get to sea during the War of 1812. Fame was also arguably the first privateer to send in a captured vessel. She seized some 21 prizes in the waters off Maine, Nova Sco- tia, and New Brunswick before being lost in the Bay of Fundy in 1814.Launched in 2003 from the H. A. Burnham Boatyard in Essex, MA, our Fame cruises on the Salem Sound, where pirates, privateers, East Indiamen, and men of war have been making history for 400 years. Fame sails from Memorial Day through Halloween from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem, MA, and offers sailing up to five times daily. A great trip for aspiring sea dogs of all ages! The menu will be caesar salad, stuffed red peppers, fresh bread and butter, white chocolate crème bruele for dessert. Charge of $8pp for members of FDCOA and $10pp for non-members. Memory Cafés meet at a variety of places in Massachusetts communities. Each memory café is
different. Some cafés invite guest artists, some offer information about memory changes and
all cafés are about relaxing and chatting. All cafés share these goals:
• To help guests feel comfortable and to know they are not alone.
• To talk with others who understand what you are going through.
• To leave behind limitations and instead focus on strengths.
• To enjoy the company of others.
• To explore something new.
Join us for refreshments, activities and conversation in a welcoming place for caregivers and
individuals living with memory changes Tuesday, April 9th, 1:30-3pm. RSVP requested but
not required. For further information, contact Judith Ryan 978-762-0208

Book Club 5:30-7:30 PM—Led by Paula Corcoran No Cost
Evening Book Club – The Book Club will meet next on Monday, April 22 at 5:30 PM. This
month the book selected was The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick Plot:
Sixty-nine-year-old Arthur Pepper lives a simple life. He gets out of bed at precisely 7:30 a.m.,
just as he did when his wife, Miriam, was alive. He dresses in the same gray slacks and mustard
sweater vest, waters his fern, Frederica, and heads out to his garden. But on the one-year an-
niversary of Miriam’s death, something changes. Sorting through Miriam’s possessions, Arthur
finds an exquisite gold charm bracelet he’s never seen before. What follows is a surprising
and unforgettable odyssey that takes Arthur from London to Paris and as far as India in an
epic quest to find out the truth about his wife’s secret life before they met—a journey that
leads him to find hope, healing and self-discovery in the most unexpected places. Please call
Paula at 978 762-0208 x104 if you will be attending.

Six Top Tips for Consumers to Stop Illegal Robocalls
There is no full-proof method to stop unwanted robocalls, and real solutions require that the Fed-
eral Communications Commission use the laws effectively to regulate robocallers and require phone
companies to authenticate all calls. Yet, the following tips can help consumers take some control.
1. File complaints with the Federal Communications Commission: Complaint data is the best tool
federal agencies have to gauge the extent of the robocall epidemic. While filing a complaint may
not prompt an immediate response, complaint data may prompt the FCC to take action. The Tel-
ephone Consumer Protection Act is the only legal defense to robocalls and texts made without
your consent, and the FCC is tasked with upholding and strengthening the TCPA’s rules and reg-
ulations. File a complaint HERE.
2. Add your number to the Do-Not-Call List: While the DNC list does not stop all robocalls, it is a
valuable resource for removing your number from the call lists of companies that do not want to
violate the law. Sources of robocalls that you do business with, such as banks or student loan
servicers, and sources of scam calls that often have no regard for the law, will still get through.
Add your number HERE.
3. Revoke consent: If you’re receiving robocalls from a bank, lender, or other company you do busi-
ness with, they likely have your consent (hidden in the fine print) to robocall you. While they
like having the option, it isn’t their right and you can revoke your consent at any time. Tell the
caller you “revoke consent.” If the calls continue, contact customer service and tell them that
you no do not consent to receive calls and that you want your number to be added to their “do
not call” list. This won’t stop illegal scam calls but it will reduce the volume of robocalls you re-
ceive.
4. Don’t engage with the caller: Most autodialed robocalls include a prompt to press a key or give a
voice command. DON’T! Pressing a key, even if the recording says it’s to remove your number
from the list, tells the caller that your number is active and that you’ll likely answer future
calls. Even worse, the voice commands can be recorded and used against you by scammers to
represent consent to purchase products or services.
5. Don’t answer/block unknown numbers on your mobile device: Easier said than done, this will help
avoid robocalls. But important calls can come from unknown numbers and most landline phones
don’t have call-blocking features. Plus, listening to voicemails left by robocallers can be just as
annoying, and costly (if you purchase phone service by the minute), so use this method as a last
resort.
