IMPORTANT

***IRS Stimulus Payment Update ***

Some people are receiving their stimulus payment via an Economic Impact Payment (EIP) Card. This is legit; don’t throw it away. The Department of the Treasury announced on May 18 that it is starting to send nearly 4 million EIPs by prepaid debit card, instead of by paper check. EIP Card recipients can make purchases, get cash from in-network ATMs, and transfer funds to their personal bank account without incurring any fees. EIP Card recipients can read more about their debit card at www.eipcard.com. If you need to request a replacement EIP debit card, please call the EIP Card call center at 1-800-240-8100. Visit the EIP Card FAQ webpage for the latest information.

Low Vision and Challenge of Living Alone Groups Given the uncertainty of when we will be able to gather as a group, Lisa Westrate, group facilitator, is planning to organize virtual meetings either by phone, or possibly by computer or smartphone, for those who have them. If interested in attending either the Low Vision or CLA Group, email Lisa at [email protected] or leave a message at 978-762-0208 x105. She will also attempt to contact those who used to attend in real life.

RMV Update: The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles has announced further extensions to expiring licenses, identification cards, learner’s permits, and motor vehicle registrations. Extensions for credentials expiring in June, July, and August have been added to the original extensions for March, April, and May. www.mass.gov/info-details/rmv-covid-19-information

Preventing healthcare errors, fraud and abuse is everyone’s responsibility!

The Massachusetts Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Program is a statewide partnership between community based organizations and mainstream agencies. Our objective is to reach and educate Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, family members, caregivers, and professionals on the importance of being engaged healthcare consumers to prevent healthcare errors, fraud and abuse.

The MA SMP Program is designed to provide education and resources on how to address healthcare errors, fraud and abuse for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, family members, caregivers, and professionals, with a focused effort on reaching limited English proficient, Native Americans and other hard-to-reach populations.

Healthcare errors, fraud and abuse cost you, as an American taxpayer, billions of dollars annually and may cost you your life or the life of a loved one. We are all responsible for being involved participants in our own healthcare. If you or someone you know has been subjected to questionable billing practices and/or deceptive marketing tactics related to healthcare, contact the MA SMP Program.

The MA SMP Program is one of 54 SMP programs across the country including Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Guam and U.S. Virgin Islands. The MA SMP Program is funded by the Administration For Community Living. For more information about other SMP programs visit www.smpresource.org.

SPOTLIGHT ON DANVERS

Spotlight on Danvers Senior, George Shaw George Shaw is a long time resident of Danvers. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Mass College of Art. This led to a long and successful career designing and building store interiors for his own store and for the late great drummer, Buddy Rich. His accomplishments include a commissioned work in New York City’s Empire State Building for an English clothing designer’s showroom that included 2 of his largest paintings 7 x 8 feet. Among his many artistic endeavors, he made a living as a silversmith making fine jewelry. He now spends his time artistically not painting with paint, in self made process of using color from pictures on pictures. This technique will be made into a book, soon to be completed and hopefully published. A few of George’s most recent art can be seen at Carmen of Marblehead.

Danvers has a new Veterans Service Officer!

On March 13, 2020, Kelley Rayos-Teixeira, honorably discharged US Marine Corp Veteran, began serving the Danvers community as the Director of Veterans Services. Although new to this position, Kelley has worked for the Town of Danvers in the Clerk’s Office since 2006. A passion for serving Veterans and those in need is also nothing new to VSO Rayos-Teixeira, demonstrated by her involvement in a variety of local veteran service organizations. Kelley regularly attends the Danvers Veterans Council monthly meetings. She has also been an active member of the Essex County Detachment Marine Corps League #127 for over 10 years and currently holds the title of Junior Vice Commandant. Ms. Rayos-Teixeira also attends the monthly Peabody Veteran Council meetings, where she represents the Marine Corps League. In addition to participating in meetings where important decisions on behalf of Veterans are made, Kelley enjoys getting out and volunteering through active service. Most recently, she worked with other volunteers to distribute food to Veterans at weekly grocery distribution hosted by NSCC. Complementing her passion for service to fellow Veterans is her love of animals. Kelley volunteers weekly for Company 2 Heroes and Windrush Farm, both organizations with missions to serve Veterans in need. The office of the new VSO is located on the 2nd Floor of Town Hall in the Land Use & Community Services Department. She can be reached at [email protected] and 978-777-0001 x3095. Welcome Kelley Rayos-Teixeira!

THE NUTRITION CORNER By Cathy Andre

June & July 2020, Vol. 36 Issue 6 & 7 Page 8

With the summer quickly approaching I want to talk about hydration and the importance of staying hydrated, especially in the warmer months. Everyone says it but it’s not always easy to drink the recommended 64 fluid ounces of water a day. However, for the reasons I am going to mention it is very important. As we age our bodies ability to conserve water diminishes, and we also feel less thirsty, this in combination with certain medications makes it harder for our kidneys to work efficiently. In a UCLA study it was found as many as 40% of seniors are chronically under-hydrated which can lead to dehydration. There are a number of symptoms to watch out for such as dry mouth, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and muscle cramps in arms and legs. Along with these symptoms dehydration can cause UTI’s, falls and kidney stones. The good news is that becoming dehydrated is completely preventable!

A few tips for staying hydrated:

• Keep water by your side so it’s convenient to sip all day, don’t wait until you are thirsty. • Try adding lemon, berries or mint to plain water to add some flavor. • Drink decaf coffee or tea. • Fruit juice is also good but be careful for sugar (you can dilute it with water if you like). • Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. You can also eat your water! Some of the following foods have a high water content and can help keep you hydrated: Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Watermelon, Grapes (can also be frozen for a cool treat on hot days), Oranges and Soups. Some simple things to boost your water intake include adding lettuce and tomato to sandwiches. Eating popsicles, soups and having smoothies are also interesting ways of increasing you water intake. Here are some recipes that you can try, Enjoy! Melon Berry Smoothie ½ cup coconut water*(use regular if you don’t have coconut) 2 cups frozen berries 1 cup cubed watermelon ½ cup plain or vanilla yogurt Combine in a blender until smooth, you can add more water if you want it thinner. *You can purchase coconut water at supermarket in small boxes

Cucumber and Watermelon Salad 1 ½ cups watermelon cubed or balled ¾ of a cup cucumber seeds removed and cubed ½ red onion sliced thin or chopped (soak in lime juice for about 10 minutes 1 Tablespoon fresh mint leave Feta cheese 1 ½ Tablespoons Olive Oil ½ Tablespoon Lime juice plus enough to marinate red onion Salt and pepper Combine Cucumber, watermelon, onion and mint in a bowl and set aside. Mix olive oil, lime juice salt and pepper and pour over salad, sprinkle with Feta cheese and Enjoy! Zucchini Summer Soup Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 medium yellow onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic minced 1/2 red jalapeno pepper seeds & membranes removed (if desired), and minced 3 cups packed grated zucchini 1 tablespoon minced fresh mint leaves 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt plus more to taste 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper plus more to taste 2 3/4 cups vegetable broth 1/3 cup coconut milk Instructions: Heat olive oil in a large sauce pan set over medium-low heat. Add the onion and chili pepper, and sweat (cook without browning) until the onion is soft and translucent, 7 to 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for additional 2 minutes. Turn the heat to medium, add the grated zucchini and chopped mint leaves, and cook until the zucchini is starting to soften, about 4 to 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium -low. Simmer for 10 minutes. Remove soup from the heat and let cool for about 10 minutes. Trust me, you do not want to skip this step. That is, unless you enjoy wiping hot soup off your ceiling after your blender lid flies off. Process the soup in a blender, in two batches, until the soup is almost smooth, but with a little bit of texture. Return to the saucepan, stir in coconut milk, reheat, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve. This soup can also be served chilled – a nice treat on a hot day.
