Introduction This presentation describes the efforts made by the Marriott Library to provide a full range of media streaming services and collections including workflow, communication with faculty, budget and license negotiations, copyright and fair use, and content delivery. Knowing What Professors Want: Workflow o The Suggest a Purchase system was adjusted to accommodate streaming requests including adding Fair Use questions and statuses for tracking o Faculty fill in the form, and it ised to the team The request is then placed in the appropriate status reflecting the outcome of the research and the link ised to the faculty member for placement in their Canvas course and they are given the expiration date. The faculty member can return to the Suggest a Purchase page at any time and click on Check the Status of Your Media Request, login and see the progress of their request. Budget FY 2013/14 budget of $25,000 for DVDs Relied on database budget to initiate subscriptions to streaming media collections Asked for additional funds solely for streaming media from the central campus administration Current streaming budget FY 2015/16 Received $100,000 in new funds Continue to use the $25,000 we originally had for DVDs Media Streaming Licensing Some of the Challenges Different License Terms by Title Varying License Expiration Dates How and Who Can Access Films Only registered students may access film How many students are registered for the class? Teaching Exemption, Lending, and Public Performance Rights Dont Sign Your Rights Away Be Careful of Lending Restrictions Limited Public Performance Rights Single Title Licensing vs. Database- Considerations Staff Time: Averaged 4 hours per film Spring and Summer Semesters: 1,920 requests. Library purchased 500 single title requiring over 2,000 hours of staff time. Databases Easy Access for all of Campus. MARC records for films in catalog. Films on Demand filled many faculty requests, early subscription after several weeks of processing requests. Keeping Track of Permissions, Licenses and Expiration Dates Copyright reproduce a work prepare derivative works distribute copies of a work perform a work publicly display a work publicly Copyright Market Research Registration Records in U.S. Copyright Office Catalog Campus eMedia (Utah Education Network) Video databases canistream.it Amazon Instant Video iTunes Google Play Open web Fair Use not an infringement to use works for o criticism/comment/news reporting o teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use) o scholarship/research four things to consider o purpose and character of the use o nature of the work (fact v. fiction) o amount used o effect on potential market for or value of the work Delivering the Content Content is delivered either through the vendors hosted site i.e. Alexander Street Press or it is digitized in-house and placed on the Librarys authenticated streaming server. First Year Outcomes First Academic Year 1,612 requests submitted by faculty Delivered approx. 1,200 films (single-title purchase, licensed database, in-library streaming) Denied approx. 400 requests (streaming rights not available, did not meet Fair Use) Conclusion Have some sense of demand License films for multiple years or in perpetuity Establish a clear workflow And ask for more money!
