Trinity Lutheran Church Council met November 11, 2013, in the Fireside Room. President Dan Mickey called the meeting to order. Pastor White led the recharge.

Mike Sloup will present training on the recently installed AED; staff, ushers and others needing to know how to operate this will be trained in the near future.

The Council will contribute a new grill and an Omaha Steaks package for the Raise the Roof 2 live auction.

Rod Rinne and Pastor White presented suggestions for changes to the Trinity Constitution and By-laws regarding policy concerns.

Nancy Blezek presented information and bids for a phone system. Applied Connective is the approved company for the new phone system.

Pat Olsen, Missions Board member, reported on recent activities of the Missions Board. Several Trinity members participated in mission trips this past summer. Pastor Nestor is developing a web page for missions with a link to the Trinity website. Quilts made by Trinity members will now be taken to the Orphan Grain Train who will distribute them to places in need.

The meeting closed with prayer. The next Council meeting will be Monday, December 9, 2013.

TRINITY’S PIECE MAKERS wish to thank all of you who have contributed material to our group this year. Through your generosity and Thrivent, we made a total of 339 full-sized quilts, six baby quilts and 21 child quilts; 337 of the quilts and six baby quilts were taken to the ‘Orphan Grain Train’ in Norfolk to be distributed throughout the world. Two blankets, one comforter and two quilts were given to our local Simon House; 21 child quilts went to our local hospital for their ‘Project Linus.’ Again we ask for your help for the coming year. Sheets and material are our biggest need. There are so many needy people out there who need a warm covering. Come help us fill that need.

TRINITY ANGEL TREE On December 7 and 8, Trinity members will again be able to stop by our Fellowship Hall and pick out an Angel Tree Tag. You can choose either a gift for an adult or a child or provide a food or utility voucher. All gifts need to be returned to the church by Sunday, December 15. Be sure to register your tag before leaving the Fellowship Hall.

Again, thank you for helping to give someone a very Merry and Blessed Christmas.

T his year has marked a special milestone for me as I celebrate 50 years since my call to music

ministry at the organ and piano--30 years of which have been here at Trinity.

It has been a privilege this year to have a variety of skilled instrumentalists with whom to serve and celebrate. A big "thank you" to the following for sharing their time and talents: Jeff Peabody and Bob Johnson, brass; Kari Spicer and Brianna Bailey, violin; Carolee Wurdeman and Richa Perkins, keyboard; the Jubilation Ringers and my Praise Band friends.

Praise God for His blessing and anointing these past years. To God Be the Glory as I continue to serve Him in the future.

ANOTHER GREAT “RAISE THE ROOF”

WARM FELLOWSHIP! SAVORY FOOD!

EXCITING AUCTION! MINISTRIES FUNDED!

FUN FOR ALL!

by Pastor White

Trinity’s second biannual “Raise-the-Roof” is now part of history; and like “Raise-the-Roof 1” the event l ived up to our expectations as a celebration of congregational l ife, rich fellowship and delightful fun. The number one goal has clearly been met. The secondary goal was to bless ministries here at Trinity and in our community with income to fuel the work of Christ. This too was successfully met as people bid generously because they knew it was for their church. These outcomes are exactly why Trinity’s Leadership decided to do a reprise of the original “Raise-the-Roof.”

Proceeds for the event were received as follows:

Dinner Ticket Sales .............................. $ 3,885.00 Live & Silent Auction ........................... 18,120.00 iPad Drawing Ticket Sales................... 1,135.00 Additional Donations .......................... 6,497.70 Expenses................................................. <4,127.46> NET PROCEEDS..................................... $25,510.24

As promised, 15 percent of our net Raise-the-Roof proceeds ($3,826.50) will be given to the Columbus Rescue Mission. An additional 5 percent ($1,275.50) will be given for the work of Youth for Christ locally.

Many thanks to the hard work of the “Raise-the-Roof” committees, chair-persons, volunteers and donors. Special thanks to all who came. Count your efforts and giving as to the glory of our Savior.

“Hey, There’s A Real Baby Here!” by Pastor Zurek

During a Church’s Christmas program, the director had used a plastic doll in the manger to take the place of baby Jesus. But when the real program actually took place on Christmas morning, the plastic doll was replaced by a real baby to add to the authenticity. Everyone knew about the substitution except for one little angel named Sarah who, when she approached the manger, was shocked by what she saw. Completely forgetting her lines and where she was, Sarah began running down the aisle shouting, “Hey everybody! There’s a real baby here!”

Yes Sarah! There was a real baby there. And there was a real baby in the manger on Christmas Day. And there was a real Son of God who walked the earth performing great miracles and showing God’s Love. And there was a real Redeemer on the cross who suffered and died for our sins. And there was a real Resurrected Lord who rose from the dead three days later. And there was a real King of Kings and Lord of Lords who sits at the right hand of God inviting us to trust Him, to believe in Him and to experience the joy of Heaven.

There are those who would worry that the meaning of Christmas would be lost in the midst of all the commercialism and secularization. This Holy Day will become just another Holiday.

But I have a greater worry. I am worried that we will try to keep the Christmas

story—the story of God coming to earth to redeem and save people—that we will keep it in the past with shepherds, angels, stars and Wisemen.

The real miracle, the real power of Christmas, is when we take this story out of the past and put it in today’s world of fears, worries, trials and heartaches. Yes, Sarah, there was a baby in the manger. But this baby is all grown up now and is walking the earth, changing lives, forgiving sins, giving hope and pouring out God’s love.

This Christmas let us bow down and worship not just the one who was born long ago but the One who lives and reigns and rules forever and ever.

FIRESIDE FAITH Please consider joining us each Sunday.

Fireside Room — 9:30 a.m.

This course teaches us how to lovingly speak into the lives of those we care about. The “What Would Jesus Ask?” met ho d of q uestio ning outlines the heart of Jesus’ approach by first convincing others that they know the truth of the matter—but are not doing it—and then jump-starting them to act ion. Jesus consistently used this truth -a nd -act io n met h od

throughout the Gospels.

This course is filled with examples of the ways Jesus shows us how to use this most powerful method to help a friend, family member, co-worker or yourself make needed life adjustments.

ONLINE ACCESS TO DIRECT YOUR CHOICE DOLLARS

THRIVENT CHOICE PHILOSOPHY: We want members to experience a sense of excitement and actively participate on an ongoing basis in order to recommend how Thrivent Financial distributes a portion of its charitable grant funds. Similar to other national campaigns where people actively participate to support causes important to them, we want to connect with members so we can listen and respond to what they are passionate about when determining how Thrivent Financial gives back to communities. (Taken from Thrivent News. March, 2012)

How to access organizations to direct your Choice Dollars on the Thrivent Website: ♦ Log in with user name and password. Answer the

security question. ♦ Select Direct Choice Dollars tab. ♦ Look in Search Organization box on the screen. ♦ Select State - NE. ♦ Type in City box - Columbus. ♦ Select Search button. Churches in Columbus NE will

be listed. ♦ Complete your selection of the church you want to

direct your Choice Dollars.

WEEKEND OPPORTUNITIES – All Stars Express Sunday mornings 9:30-10:15 A.M. Age 3 - Grade 6

GUESTS WELCOME - BRING YOUR FRIENDS!

This might be the first Breakout year for these third graders, but you would never know it. They are doing a great job of getting their lessons done, memorizing their Bible verses and sharing their ideas of how to live their weekly lesson. Hats off to parents for having those helpful faith discussions! Breakout is a midweek spiritual growth program that begins in third grade with the focus on knowing Christ and progresses each year as they learn to grow in Christ, serve Christ and share Christ. The lessons are done at home and reviewed in class. Students look forward to every fourth week when we have an all-out fun night. Pictured here is the third grade class at our “Transformer” game night.

Signs Of Christmas Come see the Christmas story with a fresh perspective, like only children can tell it. Bring your family and friends! Stay for some fellowship and refreshments in the Fellowship Hall after the program. Thanks to the families of children in Grades 1-6 for providing the cookies.
