18-Day Camp Expanding Their English Speaking Skills Through The Arts Hosting two international

Open for only one week, Sacramento’s newest arts facility, the Fusion International Arts Center took on the challenge and proved their success on August 2, 2012. Coming from Communist China, the 60 teens are expanding their ability to speak English using the arts as a teaching technique, while learning life in America. Pet Tails

Man’s Best Friend Gracie is a full breed Bloodhound, age 6; her parents were multiple “best in show” champs. Owner, Frank Roberson has had Gracie since she was 8 weeks of age. She is Franks shadow and is always there protecting him. She thinks she is a 140 lb lap dog. She has an awesome personality and one trainer said “she thinks she runs the house.” That trainer would not try to train her. She loves riding in the car. She sits in the back like a human and I’m driving Ms. Gracie. The Bloodhound is described as a “unique looking dog in a baggie suit,” it is one of the oldest breeds of dog that hunt by scent. The Bloodhound made it‘s first appearance in Europe and was then established in America for over a century. This breed proved early on to be a tireless worker for law enforcement, being so accurate that evidence trailed by a Bloodhound has been accepted in a court of law. Frank Roberson does a comic strip called “Maximus” for the Gold River newspaper and Gracie was the star of the one that ran in the Sac Bee last year. She has a fun following because of the comic strip. She receives birthday cards and gifts. This year she received a valentine’s card from a dog in Maryland and his owner. When visiting a local high school, doing promo events for the comic strip or at the Charles Schultz museum as a guest cartoonist, everyone asks about Gracie. She is the poster dog for “man’s best friend.”

National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)/CA - The Voice of Small Business

Small Businesses AndAll Voters Benefit From

Prop 32This November, voters in California will have a cluttered ballot to comb

through. Once they get past the presidential race, they’re going to have to read and interpret eleven different ballot initiatives. Tax increases, budget reform, death penalty, three strikes, and genetically-altered food are just a few of the complicated issues on the ballot.

Proposition 32 deserves a close look and consideration from voters. It would ban corporate and union contributions to state and local politicians, ban automatic payroll deductions for political spending by unions and corporations, and ban government contractors from giving to politicians overseeing their contracts.

These three reforms take aim at one of the biggest problems facing California - special interest control of Sacramento and politicians across the state. The overwhelming influence of public employee unions and big corporations has resulted in a political system that fails to deliver results for the rest of California.

According to Maplight.org, in the 2010 election cycle, 79% of campaign contributions made to California’s legislators came from donors who live outside their districts.

That’s why legislators work for the well-funded special interests that fund their campaigns, not the small business owners or the entrepreneurs that drive the economy and put people to work within their districts.

It’s time for that to change. Prop 32 offers voters an opportunity to force their elected officials to represent and address their interests, their needs, their challenges. It cuts that money tie - returning power back to the voters. That’s why NFIB/California is proud support Prop 32.

Prop 32’s reforms are meaningful and applied fairly to the most powerful special interests in California. If you’re as frustrated as the rest of us with about how our state has been governed, then voting Yes on Prop 32 is a big step in the right direction.

Olympic Gold Earlier last month, everyone in America tuned into NBC to watch live coverage of the Olympics. It’s always an exciting time in my household, as each night is spent in front of the television, rooting for Team USA. Even if you don’t normally follow the sports being played, one can’t help but to be swept up in the whirlwind of madness and excitement that comes along with this event. It’s invigorating watching your favorite athletes compete for the gold, and to see the pure joy that lights up their face once they win. And although seeing the athletes triumphant from their victories is an amazing sight to behold; that actually isn’t my favorite part. My favorite part happens before the Olympics even begin. It starts in that first moment when each athlete decides to take on the challenge and trains to win the coveted Olympic medal. Watching each event and seeing firsthand how each person exudes power as they compete, I can’t help but wonder how they got there. Before they break a world record or win gold for their country, they must’ve started somewhere. Success doesn’t just appear out of thin air, it takes practice. And for these athletes that means countless hours of practice, perfecting that one thing that separates them from the gold. By the time they make it to the world stage, they’ve gone over that one stroke, one move or one play thousands of times. Luck isn’t what gets them there, practice and dedication is. So whenever I feel like I’m just about to quit, I remember that superstars like Michael Phelps, Hope Solo or Gabby Douglas didn’t just get to the Olympics by magic.

Water Alert

Regional Collaboration Makes Sense for Better

Water Management

Chances are, if you don’t follow water issues, the term “conjunctive use” means nothing to you. But it should.

With a growing population, droughts a reality and limited water supplies, conjunctive use is a critical water management tool. It will keep your water flowing during shortages.

Several area water providers, including San Juan, practice conjunctive use. During wet years, we use surface water. During dry years, we use groundwater to offset diminished surface water supplies.

Not all water providers implement conjunctive use because they don’t have access to surface water and must use groundwater. To ensure long-term water supplies, these agencies need access to surface water.

When surface water is available, it should be used by the entire Sacramento region. We could preserve our groundwater for use during droughts and emergencies. And, during wet years, we may be able to store enough water to help the State with its water shortages.

We could do this by serving water to other agencies. For example, when our supplies are plentiful, we would provide water – for a price -- to regional groundwater providers. Their unused groundwater would then be available to us and others – for a price -- during dry years.

It’s a win-win. We recharge the groundwater basin, ensure water supplies for dry years and save money by using existing underground storage. We could also gain revenue through selling of surface water. This could help pay for much-needed infrastructure for better managing our water sources.

While it seems simple, it’s not. We’re restricted due to existing regulations. It’s up to the State Water Resources Control Board to make changes to the boundaries where we can serve surface water, or legislation would also work. We’re supporting efforts to make this happen.

Goal In my role as founder of NorCalREIA investment club,

I have noticed too often we create goals that are unachievable in the time we have allocated. We often under estimate what we can accomplish in ten years and over estimate what we can accomplish in one year.

Consider making little consistent changes that often create large results. Before wrapping up your day compile a list of five tasks or goals your want to accomplish the next day. Put them in the order of importance and get them done before noon the next day. Picture this, if you complete 5 tasks a day for 5 days and you will have accomplished 25 tasks-goals that had been hanging around your desk for far too long. Next step is to look at the month ahead and schedule your goals out and possibly get these on going tasks done early, alleviating a little more stress from your life. It’s a good life. Keep it that way. With S.M.A.R.T. goal planning we often organize our goals to accomplish them in a timely manner and we often exceed our goals. More on S.M.A.R.T. goals next month. David Granzella

Cleaning Tips

Counter Top Kitchen Appliances Coffee Makers… Give your coffee maker a treat every so often. Clean it by filling the reservoir with water and adding two tablespoons of water softener. Run the machine through its cycle once, then again with plain water.

• Or fill the reservoir with white vinegar and run it through a full cycle. Repeat the cycle twice with plain water.• Another good cleaning method is to fill the reservoir with hot water and add a regular denture tablet to it. Run the machine through a cycle and repeat with clean water.

Overflowing Coffee Makers… Often coffee makers overflow due to the filter not sitting properly in the basket. To save wiping up those spills, simply wet the filter a little fefore placing it in the basket. This will usually hold it in place through the cycle.

Blender Cleaning… Add ½ tsp. dish soap to your blender. Fill half way with hot tap water, turn it on high and blend it clean. The blades create a soapy water vortex that cleans most build up really quickly.

Messy Mixers?... Use a little glycerin or vegetable oil to lubricate egg beaters. It’ll make for a much easier cleanup.

Can Opener Groomer!.. Remove food buildup from under the blades of your manual and electric can openers with the brush you get with an electric shaver. It’s just the right size and firm enough to access those awkward spots. Garbage Disposer… To clean your garbage disposer easily, simply cut a lemon in quarters and drop the pieces into the hole. You’ll find this will not only clean the blades, but it will also add a nice fresh lemony fragrance to your disposer • For garbage disposer odor, try adding 2 or 3 tbsp. of pure vanilla essence.

The OlympicsI may be the only person to have travel to London, England during the

Olympics and never went to an event. I was invited by an organization called Lay Witnesses for Christ International to minister to international Athletes, their families and supporting casts and to encourage several churches in and around London.

It was truly a world stage for competition and the exchanging of values from hundreds of countries. I believe we need to leave the good ole USA sometimes to appreciate what we have. A lot of these kids came to London, knowing they were not going to win anything but were still honored to represent their countries. Some had no choice in going. It was truly inspiring for the world to stop for a few days from all the political unrest, fighting and killing and starvation for everyone to put on their pretty uniforms and compete for the gold. Our ministry was to bring the message of hope to all that would listen. We invited athletes and others every day to events at night for Christian music, and an inspirational message from some of the athletes about their lives and what it took for them to get to this world stage, both physically and spiritually. There was so much diversity of nationalism, ethnicity, and cultural differences, it’s no wonder there is so much strife in the world.

Our message was clear; to remove fear, hate, guilt and shame in the hearts and minds of all who hear this message. It’s such an easy concept but as competitors that we are, I’m sure there will be Olympic competition in 2016.

Email vs. TelephoneI find myself increasingly communicating with clients primarily, and in

many instances, exclusively using email rather than the telephone. Email has the following advantages from an attorney’s perspective: 1) It allows me to send and respond on my schedule rather than whenever the client decides to call. 2) It establishes a written record of the discussion for both parties. 3) It allows me to compose and think about my response more fully than expressing what is perhaps an “off the cuff” opinion during a telephone call.4) It is much easier to communicate with a large group of people at once via email. 5) Email is cheaper than the telephone. Telephone calls (and face-to-face appointments) are, however, superior to email when brain-storming idea. Like snail mail,” regular telephone communication is giving way to newer technologies in law, just as in other areas of business.

SAY CHEESE PLEASE!! Farmstead Cheese that is, defined - “the cheese must be made with milk from the farmer’s own herd on the farm where the animals are raised”. I’ll just about go anywhere for this truly artisan product. With the outside temperature at 100 to Orland, California, I went. It’s all about the entrepreneurial spirit and the passionate idea that a third generation dairyman along with his family can work together to make cheeses that reflect the time honored tradition of gouda with the uniqueness of their own beautiful herd. Meet the Pedrozo family. Tim, the dairyman, with his wife, Jill and two children began making cheese in 1998 with their grass-fed Jerseys and Holsteins. He is zealous about providing his thirty cows (the smallest dairy in California) with the best pasture on their ranch. Jill developed the recipes, but they all have learned how to make the cheese and they all work the process from milking, developing the curds, creating the specific wheels. The raw milk cheese is aged for at least 60 days and in some cases for six months. They also take their cheeses to Farmers Markets including the one on Sunrise. That’s where I met the son, Tom. He was so enthusiastic about his family’s business and proud of their work. It was a joy to meet a young person who relished his upbringing. Pedrozo cheeses have several varieties including their Blondie’s Best named after their first cow who was a pet. The Northern Gold is buttery and is also blended with flavors; Garlic & Herb and Black Peppercorn. The Stout Cow made with Sierra Nevada Stout and Tipsy Cow bathed in Petite Syrah are my current favorites. The Black Truffle will be featured in the Williams Sonoma Christmas catalogue. They are also available at the Sacramento Whole Foods, Taylor’s and web site. Contact [email protected]

How Much Does Your City Spend on Lawsuits?

Recently, Rockefeller College’s Local and Intergovernmental Studies program in New York released preliminary data from a study evaluating how much localities in New York State are spending on judgments and other costs of lawsuits. The study, the first to tally the statewide costs of lawsuits in New York, was commissioned by the Lawsuit Reform Alliance of New York and its full results are due to be released this fall.

The preliminary data shows that New York State localities spend at least $1 billion a year on judgments and other costs related to lawsuits. That is $1 billion with a “B.” Keep in mind that this study only looked at the cost of lawsuits to localities – not the state government.

Researchers tracked lawsuit costs from the general funds of municipalities as well as from insurance programs that some local governments use. Not included in the preliminary data was information on how much commercial insurers pay out each year or the cost of bond sales that are sometimes needed by local governments to pay litigation costs.

With cities going bankrupt throughout the nation, the public should be asking their officials at all levels of government how much lawsuits are costing taxpayers. This is especially true here in California, where several cities have recently declared bankruptcy. In fact, the cost of a lawsuit directly contributed to the bankruptcy declaration of Mammoth Lakes, California.

California CALA routinely looks into the issue of the amount of taxpayer dollars being spent on lawsuit costs, and will continue to do so, but we need your help to push for greater transparency. During this upcoming election season, be sure to ask your candidates if they will work to reduce the amount of taxpayer dollars spent on lawsuits and where they stand on legal reform.

By Tom Scott Project—Teaching Kids

By the time they reach high school, half of our best and brightest students–our most intellectually gifted–are underachieving. Research on underachievement has repeatedly shown that the top 5% of our students not only perform poorly compared to their capabilities in high school, but 48% of them drop out of college. And very few of them become “late bloomers.” Instead their career performance mimics their performance in high school. They move from job to job and fail to establish or distinguish themselves.

Though we can ill afford to lose the contributions of these bright minds, underachievement has proven to be resistant to interventions. For the past 60 years, no matter what has been tried, little has been accomplished in changing the direction of these students.

In the late 80’s I had noticed that parents of underachievers had a difficult time making demands when it came to school. And they told me that the reason was that they were afraid that if they insisted it would result in a power struggle that would ruin their relationship with their child. But by failing to insist, they unintentionally colluded with the children’s poor performance.

Instead of giving simple, clear directives, they asked questions, pleaded for them to just try, used rewards or punishments, hired tutors, had evaluations conducted. The problem is that all of these efforts neglect to say that doing school work is required. Neither questions about why someone is not performing, nor dire warnings actually insist on compliance with assignments.

And threats and rewards are if-then statements that actually give two choices, compliance or non-compliance and turn the issue over to the children to decide.

When all else fails, in too many cases parents resorted to lobbying teachers for grades their student failed to earn, insisting that he or she needed a “success experience” in order to improve. In other cases parents simply do their children’s assignments for them.

These efforts fail because when a child starts to balk at school assignments they are asking a question: “Do I have to do this?” What they need to hear is that schoolwork is a non-negotiable given and must be done well. While it’s true that for bright children, school is often boring, it’s also true that when they start ducking assignments, they develop enduring habits of evasion that come into play across a broad sweep of their future lives.

On the other hand, for fifty years research has reliably demonstrated that when parents are warm and engaged in their children’s lives, set clear limits, make high demands and are firm and insistent about their being reached, kids flourish across the board. Their mental health is better, their anxiety lower, their achievement higher, delinquency is rare and self-esteem is better.

In 1990 I founded the Maximum Potential Project and tried a new approach. We put parents in a group and guided them on how to shift directions and how to warmly and firmly insist on compliance with homework. We put kids in 14-week group that focused on their aspirations and dreams and on choice and personal responsibility for reaching them. We taught them tools, like how to set goals. And we only discussed school work when they brought up the topic.

The results were transformational. For the first 46 families in our project, GPAs rose an average of .6, which meant, for example, going from a 2.7 to a 3.3. A six-month follow up, showed an .8 improvement, which meant going from a 2.7 to a 3.5, perhaps the difference between going to a community college and attending the University of California.

Be Self EmployedWant Job Security? Learn from a Mentor!

I’m looking for a couple of people that want to learn how to start and grow a janitorial business. I’ve built a janitorial business 3 times in 3 different states and have hired hundreds of employees. When I first moved to the Sacramento Region I had 22 employees in 12 months.

Remember the days when starting your own company was the risky play and joining the big guy was safe? After all, corporations were the “stable” choice; the kind of brand-name places that made your parents feel comfortable.

How times have changed. Over the past few years, we’ve learned that our knowledge-based economy is full of quick-turn transitions, ones that large firms often can’t handle effectively. Nimbleness is the key.

Beyond that, of course, the latest recession forced big player after big player to slash payrolls.

The conclusion, of course, is clear: It’s all risky out there. Big companies are no longer a safe haven; small companies are no longer only the bold.

If you’re thinking of making the jump into your own gig, you need a mentor.

If you are interested in improving any aspect of your business life, I’d like to let you know about one of the most powerful and shockingly simple methods for personal transformation I have ever experienced.

If you qualify, we’ll joint venture at the beginning then you’ll buy me out and own the business and revenues for yourselves.

Yes it will take work. I’ll teach the fundamentals of prospecting. I’m looking for two people who qualify to help them own and build a janitorial business right here right now. I will mentor and partner at the start until the business is up to the numbers that enable you to buy me completely out. I’ll teach the fundamentals of prospecting, follow up, bidding, selling, signing the agreement, and doing the work agreed upon. Yes it will cost some money up front. I will be immersed with you in building the business as fast as possible.

Contact me via email if you’re interested. I want to work with a team of two people. A husband and wife are acceptable. Gary Stalick [email protected]

I know of no safe repository of the ultimate power of society but people. And if we think them not enlightened enough, the remedy is not to take the power from them, but to inform them by education. Thomas Jefferson

There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philoso-phers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands. Plato

Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning; they want the ocean without the roar of its many waters. The struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both. But it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has and it never will.Frederick Douglass

The Why?I lost a close friend this month who was killed instantly

in an auto accident. She was just 36, gorgeous and full of life and promises. She had dreamed about getting married all her life and the man she loved had planned to propose to her at Niagara Falls on her next birthday in September. It broke my heart seeing her at the funeral a beautiful unwed bride in a red gown she may have worn on her wedding, now eternally gone. As I pained over my friend’s unfulfilled dream, I pondered on how often we let ours pass by. The life and work current ruthlessly drifts us along and it’s so easy to lose one’s perspective in the endless stream of everyday mundane tasks. We are way too busy completing a project or picking up groceries to think about the meaning of our existence on earth. Is life just a coincidence? What do we expect to get out of it? Do we know the why of what we are doing? Jennifer’s fiancée asked us at the memorial service to give her a standing ovation to celebrate her life. Short as it is, I believe she has made the most of it. I remember an advice, “when you were born, you cried and everybody smiled. Live your life so as to have everyone cry as you die smiling.” I know my Jennifer would be smiling before her last breath! One oriental philosopher stated “to live is to prepare for the eternal death.” Life is too long or too short depending on when it ends, but to achieve its smiling ending, we probably need to focus on the why of the very present. Treasure the moment, love passion-ately, do good deeds every day and thrive to make a difference to our world. Most impor-tantly, keep your dreams alive and fulfill them.

Chocolate SouffléAbout this Chocolate Soufflé Recipe

A chocolate soufflé is a luxurious, light, and fluffy chocolate dessert that will wow your family or guests. What makes a soufflé special is that as the soufflé bakes, it dramatically rises right up right out of the ramekin it is in. In French soufflé actually mean to “puff up”.

Soufflés are not anywhere near as difficult to prepare as their reputation lends them to be. If you want to learn how to make a chocolate soufflé just follow our soufflé making tips and instructions and you will become a pro at making this ultimate chocolate dessert. • Prep: 30 mins. - 1 hr. • Cook: ~30 mins. • Serves: 6

Ingredients • 6 eggs - You need all the whites, but only 3 yolks. Use older eggs, not fresh. • 1 cup whole milk • 5 ounces semi-sweet chocolate - 62% - 70% cacao. Use your favorite brand of high quality chocolate! This is incredibly important! • 3 tablespoons butter - For buttering the ramekins. Melted. • 1 vanilla bean • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder - natural unsweetened (not dutch-processed) • 6 tablespoons superfine sugar - plus more for coating ramekins • powdered sugar - for dusting • whipped cream - (Optional) to top the Soufflé.Preheat your oven to 350º Fahrenheit. For this recipe you will need 6 six-ounce ramekins.

Using a pastry brush or your finger, brush the melted butter on the bottom and sides of the ramekins until thinly coated. Soufflé Making Tip: Use upward brush strokes on the sides of the ramekins. This will create groves in the butter to help the soufflé rise straight up. Step 1: Place the ramekins into the refrigerator for a couple of minutes to allow the butter to harden. Remove the ramekins from the refrigerator, dip your brush into the melted butter butter, and go over the sides of the ramekins again using upward strokes. As soon as the butter touches the cold ramekin it will stick to it. The reason for brushing the sides twice is insure that the chocolate soufflé doesn’t stick to the side of ramekin. If it does, it won’t rise.Step 2: Pour a hefty amount of the superfine sugar into one of the buttered ramekins. Holding it over another buttered ramekin, turn the ramekin every which way until a light layer of the sugar sticks to the bottom and sides. It’s ok if some of the sugar spills out into the other ramekin. Once it looks like the image on the left, pour the excess sugar into the other ramekin. You can even give the ramekin some light taps to make sure the excess sugar comes out. Repeat until all of the ramekins are coated in sugar. What the sugar does is act as little wheels to help the soufflé rise. Place the ramekins into the refrigerator.Step 3: For this step we are using vanilla to flavor the chocolate soufflé. However, you could easily change up the flavors by adding anything else. For instance, maybe the peel of an orange. Add the milk to a saucepan. Slice open the vanilla bean lengthwise.Step 4: Scrape out the seeds and add them to the pot along with the split open vanilla bean. Bring the milk to a boil on your stove. Remove from the heat and let the milk and vanilla steep. This will help the vanilla flavor permeate throughout the milk. After a couple of minutes, remove the split open vanilla bean and discard it. Step 5: For this chocolate soufflé recipe, we need only 3 egg yolks, and 6 egg whites. Extremely important: You can not get ANY, not even a drop, of broken egg yolk mixed with your egg whites. Otherwise, when you make the meringue later on, the fat in the egg yolk will prevent the egg whites from whipping up. Also, try not to touch the egg whites with your fingers, as your skin naturally has oil in it. Tip: Use cold eggs if you want the whites to separate easier from the yolks.

Chocolate Covered StrawberriesAbout this Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe

Chocolate covered strawberries are the perfect quick and easy dessert for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion such as a wedding, shower, anniversary, or Mother’s Day. Strawberries and chocolate go together perfectly. However, you could easily modify this recipe and use different types of fruit.

Tips: Use a high quality chocolate such as Godiva brand and ripe organic strawberries. You can use dark chocolate or milk chocolate. • Prep: ~30 mins. • Cook: ~30 mins. • Serves: 6

Ingredients • 1 lb fresh organic strawberries • 6 ounces chocolate • 3 ounces white chocolate (optional)Step 1: Wash and throughly dry your strawberries. If you do not dry them well enough, the chocolate may have trouble sticking.Step 2: Measure out the chocolate. I used a digital food scale.Step 3: Put a small pot on your stove over high heat and add about an inch of water. Find a heat-safe bowl that you can fit over the pot so that the bottom of the bowl is above the boiling water. This will allow the steam to melt the chocolate. You can also use a bain-marie.

Step 4: Stir the chocolate with a long spoon until fully melted. Steam may escape from around the bowl and burn you so you want to use a long spoon so your hand isn’t above the bowl.Step 5: Dip each of the strawberries into the chocolate. Keep a small part of the top of the strawberry free of chocolate so that part of the strawberry can be seen.Step 6: Place each of the chocolate covered strawberries onto a plate topped with a sheet of wax paper. You can put this is the fridge to allow the chocolate to harden onto the strawberries.Step 7: (Optional) If you want to make your chocolate dipped strawberries look fancy for a special occasion such as Valentines’s Day, you can use white chocolate to create designs onto the dark chocolate. Using the same pot as above, add some extra water if you need to and place a new bowl over the pot. Add your white chocolate.Step 8: Stir the white chocolate until fully melted. Turn off the burner.Step 9: Spoon the white chocolate into a snack-sized ziplock bag. Use a scissor to cut the smallest amount you can off of one of the bottom corners of the bag. This should make a very tiny opening. Push the white chocolate down to the corner of the bag that has the cut off tip. If the white chocolate is too hot to handle through the bag then let it cool for a minute. Then gently squeeze out the white chocolate onto the dark chocolate covered strawberries. You want a very thin line of white chocolate coming out. This will allow you to create intricate designs. For a great presentation, serve your chocolate dipped strawberries on a long slender plate lined up in a row.

S’more BrowniesThese won’t last long, you

may want to make a second batch.Total Time: 1 hr 20 minPrep: 20 minCook: 1 hr 0 minYield: about 12 (2-inch) squares IngredientsCrust: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 cups crushed graham cracker crumbs 2 tablespoons sugar Pinch fine salt Brownie: 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped 1 cup packed light brown sugar 3/4 cup white sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon fine salt 4 large cold eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour Topping: 4 cups large marshmallows

Directions

Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and heat oven to 325 degrees F. Line an 8 by-8-inch square baking pan with foil so it hangs over the edges by about 1 inch.

For the crust: Lightly butter the foil with some of the melted butter. Stir the rest of the butter together with the crumbs, sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Press the crumb mixture evenly over the bottom of the pan. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the brownie. Put the butter and chocolate in a medium microwave safe bowl. Melt in the microwave on 75 percent power for 2 minutes. Stir, and microwave again until completely melted, about 2 minutes more. Alternatively, put the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Bring a saucepan filled with 1 inch or so of water to a very slow simmer; set the bowl on the pan without touching the water. Stir occasionally until melted. Stir the light brown and white sugars, vanilla and salt into the melted chocolate. Add the eggs and beat vigorously to make a thick and glossy batter. Add the flour and stir until just incorporated.

Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake until the top is crispy and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out mostly clean, with a few crumbs, about 40 to 45 minutes.

Remove from the oven and carefully position a rack about 6 inches from the broiler and preheat on low. Layer marshmallows across the top and toast under the broiler until golden, (keep an eye on it, it can go quick), about 2 minutes. Cool on a rack, gently removing the brownies from the pan using the aluminum flaps. Carefully separate any marshmallow from the foil and fold away. Cut into 12 (2-inch) squares.

Nintendo Wii U

Once again Nintendo is trying to revolutionize the gaming industry with a system that has a new controller with an embedded touch screen that allows you to continue a gaming session on the portable controller even when your TV is off. On a more mundane level, this Wii supports 1080p visuals and is backward-compatible with all Wii gaming accessories and games. That latter trait may be its biggest selling point. No word on pricing or exactly when the Wii U will hit the market, but Nintendo says it will be in stores in 2012.

iPhone 5 In September, iPad Mini In October For those of you who waited all 2011 for an iPhone 5, we’ve got news: you get to do some more waiting in 2012. When we’ll see the iPhone 5 launch is anybody’s guess, but whether it’s released in June or November, it seems like a safe bet that it will have a new design and most likely support for 4G networks. Will Apple do a 7-inch iPad? Some say no, some say yes, particularly with the success of Amazon’s Kindle Fire. We hope Apple does go small. $299. 16GB. Slam dunk.

The REAL Olympic Games

You’ve seen all the coverage on TV and the Internet for the 2012 Summer Olympic games going on right now in London. With over 200 participating nations and over 10,000 athletes from around the world, the event spans the globe and dominates the news and sports coverage. What few people know is that an even bigger sporting event is going on right now which has more “life and death” stories than all of the Olympic games (Summer and Winter) combined. I’m talking about the Transplant Games of America taking place at Grand Valley State college in Grand Rapids, MI.

As you can tell from the title, The Transplant Games of America is a multi-sport event for athletes who have undergone life-saving transplant surgeries. With sports ranging from Track & Field, Swimming, Tennis and Basketball and athletes from all age groups and over 35 states all sharing a common bond, the act of participation no matter what the results of each event make ALL of these participants winners. Athletes these days like to talk about the “sacrifice” they endure to perform at the levels they do but try sacrificing a heart, lung, liver or kidney and then go out there to compete. Olympic does not sufficiently describe the effort and dedication of these athletes.

My sister suffered a massive heart attack while jogging in September 2004 and had a heart transplant in December 2004 that gave her a new lease on life. Like all families who have been through it, we feel SO blessed for every second of time this new organ has provided as well as a sense of gratitude to the donor family. She just won a Bronze Medal in Tennis for Team Michigan at the 2012 Transplant Games but whether it was a Gaylord Focker “8th Place Participation” ribbon or a Gold Medal in the London games, her family could not be any prouder.

The event included stations allowing guests to experience scout activities such as archery, BB gun shooting, pinewood derby races, bottle rockets and more. Money raised from the event will help fund programs to expand the scouting program and continue its mission to build youth achievement, values, leadership and skills. Participating in the program was Congressman Dan Lungren from Gold River, and Jack Williams, Board Chairman of the Golden Empire Council.

We’ve all been brought up with the idea that every spring we should clean our homes from end to end and freshen up for our health. This might have come from the idea that in spring, things are fresh and new and cleaning the home will renew your feelings about yourself.

1. Improve Your Health Without Diets Or Pills

Pollens, mold, and mildew spores are dumped into the air at incred-ible intensity. Pollutants from car exhaust, burning fields, and cigarette smoke were also dumped into the stagnant air. All this gunk drifted into your home and when you closed the house up, where do you suppose it’s been ever since? It got trapped in your home. Thanks to today’s air tight, energy efficient homes, your family and guests have been breathing that recycled air-garbage. 2. Your Home Is Your Personal Breeding Ground For Invisible Crit-ters And Varmints In addition to the air-garbage from outside, you have uncontrolled vermin inside. Too tiny to see, dust mites live in your carpet, upholstery, bedding and drapes by the millions. By now their dead bodies and dung are in your house by the billions. They live off your dead skin as do billions of bacteria in your home, including those that cause staph and strep infections. Ever wonder why so many people get strep as soon as it cools off outside? Now you know. Plus, fleas brought into your house last summer don’t die off like they do outside when it freezes. Bacteria and germs have been breeding in the warm fibers of your carpet.

3. Does Your Bedroom Smell Like A Gerbil? Here’s Why…

Besides being Harmful to our health, all the germs, bacteria and crit-ters that live off dead skin from us and our pets, stink. They eat skin and along with other excretions, put out tainted methane gas which smells bad. 4. Heavy Soil From Outside Sifts Deep Into Your Carpet Never To Be Seen Again Until the winter rains have washed the sand soil from the roads and sidewalks, heavy soils from outside are tracked onto your carpet, wiggle down deeper than your vacuum can reach and stay there, grinding your carpet down into worthless fibers. You’ll find them in your vacuum bag.

Choosing a company can be treacherous. I’ll tell you up front that my service is not for everybody, but here are some reasons to choose me: If all you want is a cheap, brush-the-dirt-off-the-sur-face cleaning, lots of companies can help you. . . . Guaranteed!!!

Cleaning now, will get rid of sandy soils before they do lots of damage or get too deep.

5. Finally – Someone Who Can Remove Those Ugly Black Lines By The Walls, or Crevice of Steps I’ve had new clients call us to evaluate some embarrassing black lines where the carpet meets the wall and at the edges of steps and jagged lines under curtains. They told me no carpet cleaner could get them out and in some cases they had tried up to five different firms. But the black remained. I inspected these lines and found the cause to be an air filtration problem. With extra effort and knowledge on our part, the ugly black lines can be removed. I told the client this and they were apprehensive. I also told them if it didn’t come clean as I described, they would not have to pay us. How’s that for confidence? Yes, we cleaned the ugly black lines. Yes, our clients were happy. 6. Do-It-Yourself Folks Get What They Paid For… …Nothing The problems I have described here can’t be fixed very

well with any home remedy. Sure you can dust and do the basic cleaning just fine. But drapes, fine rugs and upholstery often cannot be safely cleaned except by a professional. Let’s face it. If those puny little cleaning systems could even come close to the effectiveness of a trained professional using a $55,000.00 steam cleaning system, no one would pay the money for them. But There’s Still One Thing You Should Know . . .
