Pet Tails

Attila the HonFrom Milan, Italy

Sacramento residents Janet Garner and her sister, Caye Woods are the happy owners of 3 1/2 year old Attila, a Doberman pinscher. Attila was born to a breeder in Milan, Italy and lived with him for the first two and a half years. There he was trained as a Companion dog.He then went to Germany to be trained as a Protection Dog. He has Schutzund training, which we don’t have here in the U.S., and has graduated as a Certified Service Dog. The new owners met Attila at the K9 Working Dogs International, LLC in Langford, Kansas. While they had to learn German to communicatewith him, he had to learn English. The Doberman originated in Germany over 100 years ago. Today, this elegant, obedient and resourceful breed is a companion and service dog all over the world. Dobermans are puppy-like until about 4 years old. Attila is full of energy and likes to get up early. After playing for about an hour in themorning his owners alternate taking him for his 45 minute walk. During the day he takes short naps. He entertains them with his goofy side of his personality and enjoys chasing squirrels out the backyard. After his squirrel hunt it takes him quite a while to calm down.

I AM the 99%According to the news reports and the demonstrators

I’ve heard interviewed during the various “Occupy” protests, I am one of the 99% they are talking about that should be protesting the 1% of the top wage earners in the country. So I painted a sign and got ready to head down to my local town center to join in with others to protest “The Man”.

As I got ready to head out, I realized it was only 7:30 in the morning and I still had a full day of work to do so I could pay my federal, state and local taxes as well as my social security money I’ll never see and the various other deductions that pay for god knows what else. When my work day had ended, I got ready to head down to the protesters but realized I had responsibilities at home that my family needed me to tend to. Once I got all of this stuff out of the way, I was ready to go.

I drove down to my town center to join in and a funny thing happened…..there wasn’t anyone there. Only various businesses operating with people of all age groups and a wide range of salaries working to deliver goods and services to people like you and me. Some people there make more money than others and some of the business owners make more money than others but that’s what it’s like in a free, democratic, capitalistic society. Some people earn more than others because they have worked harder or went to college for a better education. And then it hit me, I AM one of the 99% of Americans who think these protestors need to get a job, get a life or get the hell out of dodge.

Act Right

More Questions From The Internet . . .

Hello Charlie, I am an actor just starting out in Sacramento. I was wondering what you would suggest I do first? Should I join a class or just start showing up to auditions? Should I move to San Francisco or LA or should I try to get experience here in Sacramento first? Can I use any headshot from a digital camera or is important to get a professional picture done? Thank you for your time.L.G.Thanks for your questions, L.G. Just showing up at auditions without really knowing how to audition probably isn’t the best idea. People remember their first impression of you for a long time, and if you aren’t prepared, it can take a long time to get back to see them again. You need some experience before hitting the “big city.” Partly for the same reason as stated above. To go to LA without being in the Screen Actors Guild makes it about 50 times harder to get any work, or an agent, etc. Don’t be in a hurry! The single most important tool an actor has is a good headshot. Spend the money to get a good one. I can make some recommendations. You can contact me at [email protected], or there are a couple of links to good photographers on my web site, www.charlieactor.com.Charlie

If you have a question for Charlie, just email it to [email protected].

Lawyers and the Economy Despite some popular belief to the contrary, business and real estate (and other) lawyers assist (and some would argue enable) our private enterprise econ-omy to function. Lawyers enable deals to be made, and businesses to be formed, purchased and sold. Lawyers also work to resolve business and contract disputes peacefully, and indeed to make it possible to enforce private contracts in the first place in many situations. Such work is essential to the successful operation of our diverse, tech-driven and competitive economy. If you have a job or own a business, thank an attorney.

Calculate Your Ideal Stock Portfolio With New (Free) Tool Riskalyze

Congratulations to local serial entrepreneur Aaron Klein, who launched his new startup’s product, Riskalyze, last week.

Riskalyze is a free investing tool that uses questions and math to help you determine what your risk profile is as an investor. Then, it helps you create a portfolio that fits your “risk profile.”

“Investing is broken, and we’re on a mission to fix it,” said Aaron Klein, Riskalyze’s CEO. “We’re taking the emotion and conflict out of investing, replacing it with quantitative math, and allowing people to calculate an optimal portfolio of investments that truly fit them.”

Riskalyze’s technology is based on the premise that, even as the Internet has transformed much of our lives during the last few years, our human process for making risk/reward decisions hasn’t changed. “Until Riskalyze, technology really wasn’t able to capture the subjectivity of risk tolerance,” said Klein. “This is a revolutionary change for the world of investing.”

The Risk Fingerprint Capture process is a short series of questions that are used to identify how you make risk/reward decisions.

The resulting set of risk/reward decisions allows Riskalyze algorithms to construct a unique and personal “Risk Fingerprint” for you, classifying you all the way from “Gardeners” who like to nurture and grow their investments over time, to “Astronauts” who have the risk tolerance to shoot for the stars.

The goal is an actionable portfolio that takes the emotion and conflict out of investing - it’s entirely based on your tolerance for risk and beliefs about the future of the financial world.

Aaron asked me to construct a portfolio for Riskalyze. I took the risk questionnaire and was shocked to find myself in the “highest risk tolerance” bucket!

My portfolio is not quite that of an optimistic gunslinger, though, and instead reflects an anticipation that the financial world will continue to limp along at best. You can check it out here.

You can check out Riskalyze in public beta, for free, at Riskalyze.com.

Californians Should Cut Back Legislator Hours

With California’s unemployment hovering at around 12.5 percent, the second highest in the nation and the state’s world economic ranking being dropped to number 8, when it was once number 5, it has become apparent that state government officials cannot fix the economy. It’s not that they don’t want to fix it, it’s because they don’t know how.

Nearly 950 pieces of legislation were introduced in the Senate alone this past legislative session, with few actually targeted at fixing the state’s economic crisis, and most being a clarification or re-writing of an existing law. Clarifying and re-writing existing laws does not require a full-time legislature. A full-time administrative employee can accomplish the same, thus, begging the question, why do we have a full-time legislature?

The 2012 election year will test California voter’s true beliefs as the new “top-two vote getters” concept will be implemented. This is where the top two vote getters in the spring primary election, without regard to party affiliation, will face each other in the fall general election. Its intent was to send a message to legislators that they need to tend to the needs of Californians, like the economy. Instead, it appears legislators missed or opted to ignore the message. Perhaps they’ll respond to a referendum on making the legislature part-time.

Today’s legislators see their policy development role as a career with salaries, benefits and a retirement plan, as long as they can get themselves reelected. This role should not be a career, but a duty to the people of California. A part-time legislature, which will probably be on next year’s ballot as an initiative, should narrow their focus and what is really troubling California and not on special interest needs.

National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)/CA - The Voice of Small Business

Final Tally of Bill Vetoes and Signings Leaves Small Business Wondering

Good news is: A number of bills important to small business and supported by NFIB were signed by the Governor. Specifically, we witnessed the signing of Senate Bill 617 (Calderon and Pavley), which requires a thorough economic analysis for every regulation with an economic impact of over $50 million.

One of the most important bills that NFIB defeated was Senate Bill 104 (Steinberg) was strongly opposed by NFIB and would have allowed employees within the agricultural industry to organize unions in the workplace through an undemocratic, intimidation-based “card check” process, not through a private balloting process.

There were some bills that NFIB strongly advocated for that sadly the Governor vetoed. Perhaps the most important was Assembly Bill 135 (Hagman). The measure required one of the members of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to be a small business owner. It is critical that one of the most powerful regulatory agencies, with enormous authority over the cost of doing business in California, has input from the business owners that it regulates. Environmentalists have been opposed to businesses being heard in the regulatory process, seeing them as the enemy of the environment, and the Sierra Club and others came out in full opposition to this bill.

So at the end of the day, where is small business left? We were able to stop some bad bills and get some good laws signed. With an important election year right around the corner, now is the time for our leaders to walk the talk – and for all of us on Main Street to hold their feet to the fire to make it happen.

Moments of Happiness

Buy it Yourself My son told me he needed a suit for some of his potential business meetings. He didn’t ask me to buy it for him. He figured he’d have to save the money to get a nice quality suit. I’ve tried to share with my 3 kids to pay cash (don’t charge it). They have learned to earn before they purchase something. The same goes for major purchases, like a car. All three of my kids in their young 20’s have no car payments. I didn’t give any money to them for their cars. I’m proud of my kids and I enjoy seeing them mature. I decided to buy a good quality suit for my son. I set it up for him at Design Tailor. Ando (the owner) knows quality suits. My son was very thankful when I told him about buying him a suit. I told him when I could meet to select a suit. A few days later I called my son to let him know I wouldn’t be available to go certain days. I was starting to suggest to him to call and make an appointment with Ando, when he told me that he’s ahead of me.My son had already made an appointment with Ando. As surprising as that was to me, it made me happy to know he’s pro-active in getting things done. We raise our kids so they can stand on their own. He’s showing the effort. It was a relief and a good happy feeling finding out, I didn’t have to follow up on a maturing young man.

“Did You Know This?”In raw numbers, California collects more tax than

any other state, as you might expect. Receipts rang in at $104.8 billion in 2010, according to U.S. Census data. Even though the sales tax declined by a percentage point on July 1, it remains among the country’s highest. Gas taxes are the second highest in the nation. In July 2011, the state doubled the motor vehicle fuel tax from 17.3 cents per gallon to 35.3 cents per gallon.

Where’s all that money going??? Every time I put 20 gallons of gas in my pickup the State gets over $7 (over SEVEN dollars). What are they doing with all that money?

If you can answer who is in charge of that money and where it’s distributed, we’d like to know. You can email [email protected].

Playing To Win Or Just PlayingI was at my grandson’s soccer game the other day and very quickly found out

that we could not yell at the kids or coaches. I wanted so to correct what I perceived to be in error, but I listened to my daughter and kept my mouth shut. That is the first rule in grand parenting you know. These kids were having so much fun and there was no pressure on them. Yes the coach did some correcting but in love and with compassion. There was no score and therefore no winner or loser. They were just having fun. They got excited when they scored a goal but not so upset when the other team did as well. When did we stop playing and have to win all the time at any cost? I have gotten to be such a fair weather sports fan that if my team is not winning I have trouble watching the game. We have completely lost our loyalty not only in sports but in the family, in the community and especially our nation. We need to capture the heart of the little children and try to get back what we have lost. We can you know. The best way out of the mess we are in is in serving others and having fun doing it. There are plenty of people out there that need help and there are plenty of people able to help. We need a method like “kids soccer” to put into play and take back our life. What is the difference between playing to play or playing to win? I love some thoughts from Karen Kimsey-House, CEO and co-founder CFI.

One is in the moment and the other is outcome or results focused. Playing to play has that special blend of joy and gratitude. In playing to play, there is aliveness and celebration and connection in each moment. When the victory comes, it’s a cool surprise – “Oh wow…I won!!!” – Instead of the result of a hard-fought battle.

In playing to win, there is dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction with the game, with one’s own abilities, and more important with the other players. There is only one thing that will fit the bill and that is winning. And somehow when the victory comes, it’s not that sweet. The build-up has been too tense and the price of winning too high. One realizes that somehow they lost themselves a little in the battle. Lost presence. Lost the in-the-moment aliveness that comes with playing to play. This just isn’t about soccer, it’s about life. Let go and play and you will be amazed how much you win.

Investment Real Estate Group

Adult PretendingA dollar saved (on taxes) is a dollar earned (in untaxed

income.) Now, I’m no tax or legal expert – and you should always consult your financial advisor before doing anything with your money. But there are many different ways to take advantage of owning real estate to shelter your finances from the withering effect of taxes – especially as you earn more and more money!

For example, one method many investors take advantage of is the use of ‘depreciation.’ We investors call depreciation ‘adult pretending.’ According to the government, after 27.5 years (for residential property) your house will turn into a pile of dust and not exist anymore. You can claim the entire value of the home in taxes over that period of time. Different parts of the home depreciate at different rates – the concrete, walk way etc is on a 15 year depreciation schedule while thing like the fridge and dishwasher are on a shorter schedule – 7 years. If you wanted to take things a step further, you could go ahead and itemize these things further – the roof for instance can be on its own 27.5 year schedule. When you replace it at year 6, you claim the rest of the value immediately and get to set up another schedule for the new roof. Not only that, but if you don’t use all the depreciation you’ve claimed in a given year, it rolls on forever like a reverse bank account. Does no more taxes ever sound good to you? Then get to your local REIA and start investing!

Pomp And Pomegranates Pomegranates are an ancient fruit. It is reported that they were on of the items brought to Moses to prove that the “promised land” was fertile. The Bible has many references of this fruit and describes high priests with pomegranates embroidered on their robes. Throughout the ages the pomegranate has been a symbol of splendor and magnificence. Skylake Ranch located in Durham brings this “miracle fruit” to our doorstep. In 2006, Gail Brown, surrounded by walnut, almond and olive orchards decided to plant 20 acres of the family farm in pomegranates. In a short time they were harvesting by hand 150,000 of these sweet red gems. The fruits really like the valley environment with irrigation and sun (but at the right time or they will burst). They are very hardy and do not require any kind of spraying. Gail along with her son and daughter-in-law are partners in this endeavor that make this a complete family run operation with hands on skills. Gail judges when they are ready which varies every year usually between October and November. Family and friends head for the field to do the picking. The Browns press the whole pomegranate to bring out the best flavor of the juice. They develop each of the products and great recipe suggestions. I particularly enjoyed the “The Perfect Pomegranate Martini”. The fruit spread is Gail’s recipe and has half the amount of sugar of jam and contains 60% pomegranate juice. It is yummy. While at the ranch I tasted their newest product in development – balsamic pomegranate vinegar. That is one that will become part of my vinegar collection. Skylake Ranch products are found at Corti Bros. and at the Sunrise Mall Farmer’s Market. Their website includes products to order and best of all the recipes.

Fashion’s NightOut Sacramento is not typically considered a city of fashion. We usually think of New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles as mega centers of haut couture and runway shows that set the stylish trends for America. A capital city of politics, insurance and conservatism, Sacramento seems to have appeared on the quiet, safe, timid side and so is the way its people dress. That’s why I was thrilled to witness for the first time the Fashion’s NightOut organized at Arden Mall on September 8th. It was definitely not the first nor the best soiree fashion event we have in Sac. However, it was the first NightOut happening at the same time with other fashionable sister cities in the nation, a fact showing that Sac is now connecting to the national network of fashion and thus embarking on evolving itself to a metropolitan of higher level of sophistication. This growth to me is so needed to bring Sac on par with the city modernly dynamic changes we are seeing. Fashion as an art form is not mere superficial vanity. Like art, it needs to be properly appreciated. We don’t necessarily wear fanciful haut couture or runway creations for daily living. To embrace fashion is to know the in style trends and fit them to your own personality, making it fun and interesting, and most importantly, a true reflection of your inner beauty. As your beauty is not skin deep, isn’t presenting its best potential to the world a worthy effort? Believe it or not, such efforts do not always require much time or money. It starts with the desire to look good, which will motivate you to observe and discover what styles and colors work the magic on you. Focus on emphasizing your great features that in turn will downplay the flaws you may have. Take a little risk and use your imagination to create something unique for your own signature look. Be trendy and be different! It is quite achievable!

Boy Scout Troop 281 joined with Pack 281 of Gold River for Sugar Pine Point

Camping Trip The Boy Scouts of Troop 281 in Gold River CA recently went on a camping trip to historic Sugar Pine Point State Park in Lake Tahoe CA. Joining them were the Webelos of Pack 281 also from Gold River. During this camping trip the older Boy Scouts had the opportunity to help

guide and teach the younger scouts many of the skills necessary for their advancement to become Boy Scouts themselves during the next step of their progression in Scouting. Along with learning to pitch a tent and outdoor fire building and safety the boys worked on meal preparation,

essentials for hiking, knots and rope fusing.

As you would expect after a full day of activities there was a big campfire where Scouts, Leaders and Parents all joined in roasting marshmallows for S’mores, telling stories and jokes and even holding a special flag retirement

“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” . . . . Robert Byrne: A leading chess player and newspaper columnist

It’s the one question all of us ask, but few of us can answer. What is our purpose in life? Is your life’s purpose to receive career promotions and become rich? Of course not. But your purpose could very well be to provide for your family, give them the comfort they deserve, and use wealth to change your family tree. Once you realize your purpose, wealth follows.

Niello Concourse at Serrano The weather was perfect on this autumn afternoon of elegance. With 200 motorcars on display, spanning nearly one hundred years, there was something for everyone to enjoy. From a 1915 Hudson, to the newest models from Ferrari and Maserati, with a strolling fashion show by Brooks Brothers and the ever popular Hennessy Cigar & Cognac Lounge, it was an exciting event. Grand Marshal Chris Cord, grandson of the event’s featured marque of Cord Motorcar’s founder, brought his 1930 L29 Cord to Serrano all the way from Ketchum, Idaho. Event organizers, Brian and Michele Moore, were pleased with the array of automobiles and agreed with the majority of attendees, “This was the best Niello Concours at Serrano ever.”

Ask Betty

Worried in Prospect VillageDear Betty,

I understand that you help people with hearing loss. Well, my husband has a hearing loss and he even has hearing aids but he rarely wears them. He’ll put them on when we go out but complains they are too loud. So they end up back in their case. He’s so stubborn. All of our children and their families are coming home for Thanksgiving. It’s like a family reunion and there will be 17 of us. I’m worried that my husband won’t be able to participate in all of this wonderful family time. What should I do? Worried in Prospect Village

Dear Worried,I hear this often…no pun intended! It takes a lot for someone to admit a hearing

loss and then spend thousands of dollars to hear better, only to rarely wear their hearing aids. We call this the “hearing aids in a drawer” syndrome. Your husband is not necessarily stubborn. More than likely, his hearing aids are not properly programmed to match his hearing loss. He may be hearing everything louder but not clearer.

At Avalon Hearing, we specialize in helping people who are unhappy with their hearing aids. We may be able to help your husband. This requires retesting his hearing, reprogramming his current hearing aids and educating him on the importance of wearing his hearing aids full-time, every day. Since we’re Gold River neighbors, I would be honored to do this as a courtesy to you and your husband. So let’s get him in right now before your family arrives for Thanksgiving

What people don’t realize is that properly fit, hearing aids are like exercise machines that stimulate what’s left of your hearing. Over time, your brain can forget how to process sounds including speech without this stimulation. This “if you don’t use it, you lose it” phenomenon is called Auditory Deprivation. And it’s another reason to make an appointment right now, before it’s too late.

We’ve all been brought up with the idea that every spring we should clean our homes from end to end and freshen up for our health. This might have come from the idea that in spring, things are fresh and new and cleaning the home will renew your feelings about yourself.

1. Improve Your Health Without Diets Or Pills

Pollens, mold, and mildew spores are dumped into the air at incred-ible intensity. Pollutants from car exhaust, burning fields, and cigarette smoke were also dumped into the stagnant air. All this gunk drifted into your home and when you closed the house up, where do you suppose it’s been ever since? It got trapped in your home. Thanks to today’s air tight, energy efficient homes, your family and guests have been breathing that recycled air-garbage. 2. Your Home Is Your Personal Breeding Ground For Invisible Crit-ters And Varmints In addition to the air-garbage from outside, you have uncontrolled vermin inside. Too tiny to see, dust mites live in your carpet, upholstery, bedding and drapes by the millions. By now their dead bodies and dung are in your house by the billions. They live off your dead skin as do billions of bacteria in your home, including those that cause staph and strep infections. Ever wonder why so many people get strep as soon as it cools off outside? Now you know. Plus, fleas brought into your house last summer don’t die off like they do outside when it freezes. Bacteria and germs have been breeding in the warm fibers of your carpet.

3. Does Your Bedroom Smell Like A Gerbil? Here’s Why…

Besides being Harmful to our health, all the germs, bacteria and crit-ters that live off dead skin from us and our pets, stink. They eat skin and along with other excretions, put out tainted methane gas which smells bad. 4. Heavy Soil From Outside Sifts Deep Into Your Carpet Never To Be Seen Again Until the winter rains have washed the sand soil from the roads and sidewalks, heavy soils from outside are tracked onto your carpet, wiggle down deeper than your vacuum can reach and stay there, grinding your carpet down into worthless fibers. You’ll find them in your vacuum bag.

Choosing a company can be treacherous. I’ll tell you up front that my service is not for everybody, but here are some reasons to choose me: If all you want is a cheap, brush-the-dirt-off-the-sur-face cleaning, lots of companies can help you. Choose us when you want deep, thorough cleaning. We’ll give you the fluffiest, freshest, healthiest, longest lasting, clean carpets possible . . .

. . . Guaranteed!!!

S Carpet CleaningDo You Know These Secrets That Save You Time, Money, Frustration And Your Health?

Cleaning now, will get rid of sandy soils before they do lots of damage or get too deep.

5. Finally – Someone Who Can Remove Those Ugly Black Lines By The Walls, or Crevice of Steps I’ve had new clients call us to evaluate some embarrassing black lines where the carpet meets the wall and at the edges of steps and jagged lines under curtains. They told me no carpet cleaner could get them out and in some cases they had tried up to five different firms. But the black remained. I inspected these lines and found the cause to be an air filtration problem. With extra effort and knowledge on our part, the ugly black lines can be removed. I told the client this and they were apprehensive. I also told them if it didn’t come clean as I described, they would not have to pay us. How’s that for confidence? Yes, we cleaned the ugly black lines. Yes, our clients were happy. 6. Do-It-Yourself Folks Get What They Paid For… …Nothing The problems I have described here can’t be fixed very

well with any home remedy. Sure you can dust and do the basic cleaning just fine. But drapes, fine rugs and upholstery often cannot be safely cleaned except by a professional. Let’s face it. If those puny little cleaning systems could even come close to the effectiveness of a trained professional using a $55,000.00 steam cleaning system, no one would pay the money for them. But There’s Still One Thing You Should Know . . .
