~How to protect yourself while holiday shopping online~1. Shop only on secure websites-the URL should have a closed-lock icon or begin with “https.” Hackers may use websites that mimic popular sites to trick you into revealing your personal information. Pay attention to the website address-even for sites you know and trust, there may be a slight change2.Use unique passwords. Consider using a unique phrase with a mix of letters and numbers. 3.Only share information required to make your on-line purchase (typically whatever has an asterisk on it). Avoid providing your personal information (such as your birthday or Social Security number) when it isn’t required. When used together with your financial information, you may be more vulnerable to fraud. 4. Avoid “saving” passwords or financial information on a website. While it may seem convenient to do so, it’s also easier for a hacker to access this information.5.Use prepaid debit cards or cash when possible. 6. Regularly monitor your account using our on-line banking (Horizons@Home) and/or our mobile app. Call 607-724-5876 for details to get set up. 7.Avoid shopping on-line over a public Wi-Fi network.

~Tis the season for scams...beware~1. Phishing emails-Phishing Emails-always popular, phishing scams get even more prevalent before the holi-days. They can take form of bogus delivery confirmation requests seeking your information oreven personalized letter to your child from “Santa”. Be extra careful this holiday season when it comes to sharing your personal information. 2. Bogus Gift Cards-You can save money by buying gift cards through second-hand retailers, but be careful as many may be a front for scammers. Gift cards may be invalid, used or forgeries.3. Fake Charities-Many scammers will capitalize on the goodwill that flourish around this time of year by ask-ing you to make a donation to a charity that does not actually exist. Be sure to verify the authenticity of any charity you’d like to make a contribution to at CharityNavigator.org.4. Package Theft-UPS and Fed-Ex will be dropping off boxes all over the neighborhood. If possible when or-dering something expensive, arrange for a delivery that requires your signature upon receipt. Otherwise track your order and bring it in quickly after it’s dropped off.5. Bogus Sites-You may get lucky and find the perfect gift at a super-low price, but don’t believe any ads or websites that are practically giving away the good stuff for free. Only shop on reputable sites. Remember to check the website address before placing an order.

Do you know these Horizons members?

State law requires financial institutions to turn inactive accounts, unclaimed insurance, and stock dividends and other inactive holdings over to State Comp-trollers. If there has been no activity (other than dividend posting) for three years, the money is considered to be unclaimed or abandoned. Despite ef-forts to contact them, the following members have unclaimed funds with Horizons. The state will act as custodian for these funds until they are claimed by their rightful owners. If you know how to reach any of these members, please contact Horizons Federal Credit Union at (607)724-5876. We would appreci-ate hearing from you before October 31, 2020. If you think you may have funds that have been turned over, please contact us for help in claiming these funds.

United Way of Broome County presented our team leader Melanie Hagopian and

Horizons Federal Credit Union with an award in September. The award was due to the generosity of our staff who participated in our employee based campaign.

We are extremely proud to have employees that are generous and dedicated not only at work, but throughout the community as well.
