Entec West Marine Diesel Generator The Entec West EW4200D/EW3500D is the result of over 35 years experience in field installation, service, and customer suggestions. It is powered by a single cylinder, high power to weight ratio, Farymann Diesel engine. The engine has a roller bearing supported crankshaft and a ball bearing supported camshaft. It can be hand crank started in an emergency. The fresh water cooling system cools the engine cylinder, cylinder head, the oil cooler, and the generator. The fresh water to sea water heat exchanger prevents sea water from contaminating the engine and generator. The unit does not require any outside air for cooling. Waste engine heat can be used for hot water heating. The control system includes an automatic shutdown system for low oil pressure, high engine coolant temperature, and high exhaust manifold temperature (lack of sea water flow). A special feature includes pre-flooding the engine bearings with lubrication before the engine starts. The layout is uncluttered and allows easy access for routine maintenance. All regular serviceable components are accessible from the front of the unit. The power output exactly matches the 15-amp dockside power system – anything that you run at the dock will run just the same while away.

STARTING BATTERIES Starting batteries need to supply heavy current (or high power) for a short period of time. Starting a healthy engine consumes only a small amount of overall energy. For example, the energy required to crank a 120-amp starter motor for 5 seconds would be around 0.17 amp-hours. (5 seconds x 120-amps = .17 amp-hours). - Or about the same amount of energy required to run an anchor light for 10 minutes. Starting batteries have a thin plate construction to maximise the plate surface area to efficiently deliver a burst of current suitable for starting. When a battery is charged and discharged, a small amount of plate material is eroded for each cycle - this is one of the wear out mechanisms for a lead-acid battery. The thin plate construction is not so much an issue for starting type batteries because they're designed to be kept fully charged all of the time.
HOUSE BATTERIES A house battery on the other hand is required to deliver lower amps for longer periods of time before charging. Deep-cycle batteries have thicker plates that allow them to withstand many more discharge/charge cycles before wearing out. It is important to correctly size the house battery system for the application.
BATTERY CHEMISTRY Lead-acid type batteries (flooded, gel and AGM) store energy in a reversible electrochemical reaction that takes place between lead plates and sulphuric acid. While discharging a battery, there is a chemical change of ions (lead and lead oxide) to suspended salts (lead sulphate). When a flooded cell battery is further discharged, a higher concentration of lead sulphate occurs to the point where some will precipitate out and fall to the bottom. It's possible for a layer to build up that can eventually short out a plate. Leaving flooded batteries in a discharged state can cause irreversible damage. While charging, the suspended salts convert back to ions. The reaction however is not perfect. Some salts fall out of suspension and become unstable. Some energy is lost to heat. Water is broken down to hydrogen and oxygen and escapes. And when the electrons leave the lead plates, a small amount of lead is lost to electrolysis. The electrical efficiency of a battery is governed by the extent that these losses are controlled. Up to 25% of energy used to charge a flooded cell battery may be lost. Gel and AGM batteries were developed to overcome the deficiencies of flooded cell technology.
GEL BATTERIES The electrolyte of a gel battery is held in a jelly state, which inhibits the precipitation of lead sulphate. Gel batteries can be left in a discharged state for a longer period of time and still recover. However, the same jelly inhibits the mobility of the suspended ions; they require thinner plates to create more surface area. And the slower movement requires a longer time for the ion
concentration to become uniform, which has some undesirable side effects. When a lead-acid technology battery approaches a fully charged state, there is a congregation of charged ions at the positive plate and some provide the energy to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen. In a wet cell battery, the gases escape. In a gel battery, the gases cause voids that momentarily increase the resistance and can cause damage through heat. Gel batteries require very strict control over charging voltage and will need to rest after rapid charging before true charge state is known.
ABSORBED GLASS MAT BATTERIES These are state of the art batteries. The acid is suspended in a special glass mat that overcomes the ion mobility problems associated with gels and in fact accelerates ion mobility to a level far better then flooded batteries. What results is a dramatic increase in charge acceptance rate and battery efficiency over both gel and flooded batteries. They are not as susceptible as gels to damage caused by lack of charge voltage control. And like gels they do not require periodic topping up and do not spill liquid if the case is fractured. AGM batteries are available in both deep cycle and starting battery configurations. The thinner plate starting battery versions deliver high starting current and are resilient to damage caused by leaving in a discharged state. The thicker plate deep-cycle versions are optimised for a far greater number of discharge and charge cycles. They have the ability to deliver prolonged higher currents over the duration of battery capacity, which makes them desirable for high inverter loads.
BATTERY EFFICIENCY Battery efficiency effects two aspects of an energy system: Higher efficiency means less wasted energy. For any charging source, a percentage gain in battery efficiency can be represented as a gain of charging source. For example, three solar panels connected to a 98% efficient battery would yield about the same stored energy as four panels connected to a battery exhibiting 75% efficiency. Efficiency also effects charge acceptance rate - the ability to sustain higher charge rates for the duration of the charge cycle. For systems using higher output alternators, engine run-time can be dramatically reduced.
USING FLOODED BATTERIES Flooded batteries should be located in a cool space well ventilated outside of the living area because of emissions of arsine and stabine gasses. Ventilation is also required to remove the explosive hydrogen and oxygen gas mixture.
• secure against movement in all directions • mount in a watertight tray big enough to hold all of
the electrolyte in the event of a case fracture • maintain with a charging system (charger, alternator
etc.) that senses battery temperature and corrects the applied charging voltage accordingly
• periodically check and top up to required electrolyte levels
An instrumentation system should be connected to provide alarms for abnormal conditions including high & low battery voltage, high battery temperature, high battery current and low state of charge. If multi-step charging is used, the system should be designed so that it trips from the absorption voltage to float voltage based on volts and amps through the battery - rather than just using a timer. The batteries should be periodically equalised to remove built up sulphates. A higher voltage is required and manufacturer specifications must be followed.
USING GEL BATTERIES Gel batteries should be used the same as flooded batteries with the following possible exceptions:
• A gel battery case fracture will result in an oozing of gel rather than a flood of electrolyte. A spill-proof enclosure is advised
• gel batteries don't normally gas but in the event that they do, the same explosive and toxic gas is emitted.
• Gel batteries should never be equalised. If attempted, risk of explosion is very high.
Gel batteries require a different charging profile to
flooded cell batteries. Manufacturer recommendations must be followed. USING AGM BATTERIES AGM batteries should be used the same as flooded batteries with the following exceptions:
• A starved electrolyte AGM battery such as Lifeline will not spill acid if the case is fractured. If using other AGM batteries, follow manufacturer recommendations regarding enclosures.
• Lifeline AGM batteries will not gas under normal operating conditions. However, under severe overcharge conditions gassing to some degree is probable.
• Lifeline AGM batteries can be equalised but only under controlled constant current conditions. Always follow manufacturer recommendations for the correct charging voltage profile.
SUMMARY AGM batteries are superior for marine and RV applications. Be sure however to differentiate between starter and deep-cycle applications. No matter what battery technology is used, manufacturers’ recommendations must be followed and safety standards adhered to. It's common for batteries to never wear out - they are typically killed through abuse and lack of system design.

Level Measuring Level measuring is available for fuel (diesel or petrol), water and holding tanks. Each meter requires a sensor that varies resistance between 0 and 180 ohms proportionate to the level in the tank. Multiple sensors can be switched to a common meter. The meters share the same 52mm diameter and are visually compatible with other WEMA meter indicators. S2 series tank level sensors have a stainless steel shaft for compatibility with fuel or water. The W2 series are plastic for water only. Holding tank sensors have an integral particle barrier and are equipped with a nipple for attachment of a flushing hose for sensor cleaning. An optional alarm is available to warn that the holding tank is full. A range of sensor mounting flanges Level Gauges and Accessories WEM#IPFR Fuel Level Gauge for use with S2 series
