ItalyFiat brand has recorded the lowest level ofCO2 emissions in Europe. The milestone wasachieved for the fifth year running and withan average measurement of 118.2 g/km(4.9 g/km less than the 2009 average). This result shows Fiat's commitment to protecting the environment through thedevelopment of simple and ingenious solutions such as the use of alternative fuelsincluding natural gas, a sector in which thebrand is the European leader. This is animportant achievement and a continuingimprovement: over the last 5 years, FiatAutomobiles has reduced its average emissions by 14%, from 137.3 to 118.2g/km of CO2, significantly lower than thetarget set out by the European Union for2015, which has been fixed at 130 g/km.Fiat also ranked first as Group, with 123.3g/km, an improvement of 2.6 g/km on lastyear. The record is certified by JATODynamics, the world's leading automotiveconsultancy and research firm.
LNG jetsBoeing has already developed concepts
for a hybrid-electric passenger jet andnow, under the project SUGAR (SubsonicUltra Green Aircraft Research) Freeze, ithas unveiled its plans for an aircraft powered by natural gas. Boeing’s idea isbeing supported by NASA, whose specialists think that airlines will be usingthis technology by 2045. The aircraftconcept is intended to fly on the power ofcryogenic liquefied natural gas, which willenable it to increase its fuel efficiency by asmuch as 64% compared to the currentpassenger jets. For the moment, SUGARFreeze is being designed for commuteraircraft, because of the relatively low performance needs, but the need togreen up aviation is perpetual, so it willeventually move to long distance travels.NASA had awarded Boeing a year-longextension to its concept studies for "N+3"-generation airliners flying around 2030-35.However, the company launched "N+4"study, targeting the 2040-50 timeframe,as the first plan left a lot of technologies onthe shelf, including LNG, because theywould not be mature enough for use in aircraft entering service around 2030-35.
European NGV NewsUnited KingdomThe bus operator Arriva UK bus willreceive 21 MAN EcoCity biomethane-powered vehicles to service the North East, North West,Yorkshire and Kent. “The cleaner fueledbuses will play an important role in delivering more sustainable transport inthe communities we serve and positivelycontribute towards the air quality actionplans that our local authority partnersare working hard to achieve,” said MikeCooper managing director, Arriva UK Bus.The Department for Transportannounced that £31 million will be spenton 439 low-carbon buses, part of theGovernment’s Green Bus Fund, whichaims to bring down fuel emission and airpollution levels and encourage bus operators and local councils to make theswitch to hybrid-electric, fully electric ornatural gas buses. More than 20 agencies, including Stagecoach, Arrivaand First, are receiving more than £22million, with more than £8 million splitbetween five local authorities.

With a steep increase of the fuelcosts taking place in manyEuropean countries, citizens areincreasingly turning to publictransport in attempt to adapt tothe current gloomy economic situation in the Eurozone. Is therean alternative for heavy duty andcommercial vehicles, which areseeing their costs reaching sky-high levels? The complete shiftto the railway mode is neither apossible, nor a viable short-termsolution and the current emergency might provide an additional reason for truck-driversand companies to convert togreener and cheaper options likenatural gas. In some countries, like Sweden and Italy, this isalready possible thanks to a goodnetwork of filling stations, but toallow trucks and heavy duty vehiclesto travel across Europe, moreinvestments have to be made.
According to the Europeanexperts group on the future transport fuels, natural gas is ableto play “an important role in urbanand medium distance transport inthe mid-term”, with some 15mnvehicles by 2020 and a “highermarket share” that could bereached “towards 2030 andbeyond.” This is a positive estimation, but it might prove fartoo cautious in the light of recentevents. One year ago, when thispivotal EU report was released, the austerity measures in someEU member states did not bringthe oil costs to near 2 euros perliter and the new car registrationswere not in free fall. At the time,
A voice from Brussels
the experts said that “pilot projectsfor heavy duty vehicles running onmethane gas, and projects on synthetic fuels for long distance passenger and freight transport, should be supported.” More than ever, this support should start immediately.
The EU authorities have alreadyincreased the initiatives concerningthe sector of heavy-duty vehicles. They represent about a quarter ofthe road transport Co2 emissionsand some 6% of the total EU emissions, and are also the second-biggest source of greenhouse gaseswithin the transport sector. At thebeginning of 2012, the directorategeneral for Climate Action publisheda study on the reduction and testingof Greenhouse Gas Emissions fromHDV and, on the 22th of February, there has been a public consultationwith the stakeholders. A secondmeeting will take place before thesummer and the ongoing impactassessment should be concluded bythe end of 2012. The aim of theCommission is to adopt its Co2emissions strategy for heavy dutyvehicles in the first semester of2013. This roadmap, according to apresentation made during a meetingin March, might contain some objectives for the emission reductionand some measures targeted atHDV purchase and use.
In the white paper on transport published one year ago, on the 28thof April 2011, the EU Commissionstates that “freight shipments overshort and medium distances (belowsome 300 km) will to a considerableextent remain on trucks”. It is therefore important to “improvetruck efficiency, via the developmentand the uptake of new engines andcleaner fuels, the use of intelligenttransport systems and further measures to enhance marketsmechanisms”. A report on the
meeting which took place inFebruary says that “according to anumber of participants, incentiveswould be welcome to supportindustry initiatives, the use of biofuels, and investments in refueling infrastructure for alternative less GHG intensivefuels”. The main issue has alreadybeen raised: the lack of infrastructurethat prevents truck-drivers to workacross Europe with cleaner, cheaper and available vehicles.
In a recent event for the launch ofthe Green Freight initiative, on the27th of March, the EUCommissioner for Transport, SiimKallas, pointed out that “in thefuture, oil will become harder tofind, more expensive to importand generally more difficult toobtain from unstable parts of theworld”. Nevertheless, the freighttransport is expected to increaseby 80% by 2050. Therefore, “itmakes sense for the sector toreduce its oil dependence bydeveloping cleaner options,”according to the commissioner, who mentioned, as an absolutepriority, to “optimize energy efficiency by using new vehiclesand cleaner fuel technologies.” It is a definitely reasonable andrealistic approach, which has tobe sustained through an all-encompassing strategy.

The current high prices atGerman filling stations are makingdriving an expensive hobby. The average price is currentlyaround 1.62 euro for Super E10and 1.51 euro for diesel. Thesenew record prices have rekindledthe debate on petrol and diesel andthe reliance of road transportationon oil. In the political debate, theremoval of barriers to help alternative fuels such as GAS andBIOGAS to compete has come evenmore under the spotlight. This isalso advocated by erdgas mobil.According to its own calculations,a price increase of 10 euro-centson fuel results in a national
economic loss of around 5 billioneuro a year. If just a tenth of thissum were to be invested in naturalgas filling stations, the number ofstations in Germany would double.Such an expansion would be worthwhilesince the commodity price for NATURAL GAS is no longer linked tothe oil price due to its abundant supply. The average price for theenvironmentally friendly fuel currentlystands at 1.02 euro per kilogram.Adjusted to the equivalent energycontent of premium petrol, this represents a price per litre of just66 cents, which makes it around 50percent cheaper than diesel and 60percent cheaper than Super.

Since 2010, StadtwerkeAugsburg, the city’s municipal utility, has relied exclusively onNATURAL GAS for its bus service. In February 2012 it added tennew natural gas buses and sopassed the magic threshold of100 vehicles. “This is further indication of the utility’s commitment to the environmentally friendly fuel NATURAL GAS,” said Stadtwerkegeneral manager Norbert Walteras the vehicles were handed over
by the manufacturer, MAN Truck &Bus. The new low-floor buses areequipped with extremely economicalgas engines, which also meet thestringent EEV emission standard. A total of 30 solo and 72 articulatedbuses are now powered by naturalgas. Passengers in Augsburg arealso conveyed in a very environmentally friendly manner onaccount of the buses being refuelledentirely with BIOGAS. This reducesCO2 emissions by up to 97 percentcompared to petrol.
Upturn In NGV
NATURAL GAS and BIOGASfuels are becoming increasingly important. This is confirmed by the registration numbers of theFederal Motor TransportAuthority (KBA), which revealthat around 19 percentmore natural gas vehicleswere registered last yearthan in 2010. This is almosttwice the growth rate of theoverall market. The mostpopular natural gas vehicle in2011 was the VW Caddy, which sold 2,682 units. Thetop 5 also includes the VWTouran, VW Passat, OpelZafira and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. On the otherhand, new registrations ofLPG-powered vehicles wereabout 40 percent lower forthe same period, according toKBA. All in all, more than7,500 natural gas passengervehicles and light truckswere registered last year. Some 200 heavy goods vehicles and buses were alsoregistered. This puts NATURAL GAS in the topspot amongst alternativedrive systems, thereby maintaining its position withrespect to LPG, electric andethanol. In 2012 erdgas mobil alsoexpects a greater demandfor natural gas vehicles. In particular, new models likethe Opel Zafira Tourer, OpelCombo and Volkswagen up!are expected to arouse theinterest of buyers. It is alsosafe to assume that somemotorists held back from making a purchase in 2011in order to wait for the newmodels. The current recordprices for petrol and diesel willgenerate even more demandfor natural gas vehicles.

® The role of legislation is essential, therefore continuous communicationto key decision makers and localauthorities is needed to overcomethe market barriers in the development of gas refuelling, biogasproduction and upgrading infrastructure.
® Development of public-privatepartnerships in many cases is crucialfor successful business development. In order to start a project for biogasupgrading and utilization as vehiclefuel, it is best to form a partnershipalong the whole value chain.
® The public opinion of CNG vehicles, especially in terms of environmental behaviour, are very
positive and successfull practicalexamples of the NGV technology areincreasingly boosting the interesttowards using NG/biomethane asfuel in transport. The use of LNG inheavy duty vehicles and in shippingand the L-CNG filling station conceptreinforces this development.
The European Union (EU) has seta 10% binding minimum target forthe market share of fuels fromrenewable sources in road transport, including gaseous fuels, and aims at dramatically reducingoil dependency and reduce GHGemissions by 2020.

Bologna, recognized for its commitment to sustainable transport
Recently, the host city of NGV2012 won the "EuropeanMobility Week Award 2011". The runners-up are Larnaka(Cyprus) and Zagreb (capital of Croatia), respectively. This award further confirms the work carried out byBologna in favor of the environment. And, for this purpose, NGV is one of its major allies:* Emilia Romagna, the region whose capital is preciselyBologna, has 151 NGV stations, 17% of the national total.* Also, the province of Bologna triples the NGV stations’ density of the whole Italy, with 27 dispensing points.
The added value of Bologna Workshops
Manuel Lage, General Manager of NGVA Europe(host of the event), examines which features characterize these workshops and why it is worthattending:"Bologna 2012 will be our next big European -and global- event for the natural gas vehicle industry. After the great success in Madrid, Romeand Berlin, now we meet in Bologna, in the heart ofthe number one European NGV market to seewhat's new in the industry and in particular, to discuss in our workshops about the sustained evolution of technology and applications of bothcompressed and liquefied natural gas in the different types of vehicles: road, railway, ships and aircraft.Natural gas is the only fuel that can be used in twodifferent states: as a gaseous fuel (CNG) and as aliquid fuel (LNG). And this unique feature opens various and great application possibilities. Moreover, the dual source of obtaining methane -as naturalgas from wells or as renewable biomethane produced from municipal, agricultural, livestock and forestry waste- demonstrates it is the alternative fuel most often employed in all types ofvehicles and engines. In various workshops we will study the evolution ofthe term "virtuous cycle" of production and use ofbiomethane in cities, the vision of the growing number of automakers offering factory-built newmodels with CNG option, the interesting field of dualfuel in heavy trucks, the increased use of LNG inmarine propulsion -now also affected by the newexhaust emission regulations from the ECAS(Emission Control Area for Ships)-, several studiesand developments from both sides of the Atlanticregarding use of LNG in airplanes, and much more.In NGVA Europe we are very pleased to witness theincreasing worldwide interest in natural gas as analternative, sustainable and -of course- availablesolution to replace petroleum. Our association isgaining reputation and recognition both in the fieldsof technical and political work, and we are happy topresent our achievements and share our activitieswith the entire NGV sector in Bologna 2012."

WGC2012 – Sustaining Future Global Growth
May 2012 Gas Vehicles Report22
1) In this moment my vision issurely positive and I see very goodexpectations considering the market that is constantly growingalso thanks to the cost of fuel thatmakes easier this development. What should be done for giving astrong impulse everywhere, butspecially in the new markets, would be to expand incentivestructures like refuelling stationsand workshops, but a still fasterdevelopment would be allowed, without doubts, by cheaper conditions to be granted to theend user. Unfortunately, in myopinion, in many Countries endusers are not informed enough, but a solution can be found organizing dedicated events andforums in more Countries andinvolved Companies should promote themselves more, alsothrough advertisements, journals, publication on website, and so on.In this way we can think toimprove the general acknowl-edge that permits to developmuch more the NGV market. Finally, not less important, eachCountry should be providedwith a specific regulation andnational associationsshould be promoted in orderto have around well controlled infrastructures.
2) The most requested product isIG1 injector because this is theproduct that has made history inaftermarket field. It is really wellknown for its reliability, ease ofuse and for its best compromisebetween quality and price.Nevertheless also the demand anddevelopment of other injectors ofour range of products is growing, but when the installer is satisfiedof a particular product is difficultto convince him in regard to theinnovation and new technology.
3) We have several projectsunder development. Some of themhave the purpose to complete ourrange of products for several typeof applications, others are innovative products. Research &Development, together with theIndustrialization, is the area whereRail makes the biggest investments in perspective.
4) The suggestion I would like toexpress is to involve more thelocal institutions, governmentauthorities, local vehicle manufacturers, alternative fuelproducers and suppliers in theNGV event and exhibition that areusually organized.
Valves, accessories and componentsGVR talked to main producers of this field. They gave their opinion about the current globalNGV industry -new and best markets- and their ideas to boost sales. Also, the demands ofthe clients and their cutting-edge developments. This overview is a useful tool to make better decisions. Valuable tips from the protagonists.
1) Please give us your vision about the current NGV market. What should be done to impulse a still faster development?
2) Which is your most requested product and why? 3) Do you have nowadays some project under research/development?4) Is there something else you would like to say?

1) For SEITZ it is very interestingthat the biggest development ofthe NGV markets are happeningin developing countries, such asPakistan, India, China, Thailand,Bangladesh as well as Iran. Therefore, it seems that countriesin Africa are likely to follow. It isamazing, how fast Pakistan hasbuilt up their infrastructure in ashort period of time. In the meantime it seems a rather settled and established market. On the other hand, it is a shamethat Europe (except Italy) is moving very slowly being a pioneerin many environmental issues andeven if CNG is supported by governments with lower taxes. The annual figures of registrationsof CNG and other alternativefuelled cars e.g. in Switzerlandand Germany are lower than 1 %.It is also good to see that itseems that the US NGV-market isgoing through a new “NGV age”with lots of new installations. It isa pity that we have a slowdown ininstallations in the Iran-market dueto the political situation and boycott. Presently it is extremelydifficult to handle and processorders from Iran.
2) The main products from SEITZare high pressure solenoid valveswith pressures up to 350 bar for
the CNG stations. We are supplying these solenoid valves indifferent sizes since the 1990sand supply them to manufacturersof CNG-dispensers and/or compressors as well as packagersof stations. These valves aredesigned and manufactured in amodular system which allows ourcustomers to use them as single- orblock valves. Nearly every configuration is possible even up torather complicated priority panels.Presently the 4th generation ofvalves is in use worldwide. Moreand more block-solutions aredemanded to avoid complicatedinstallation work, tube bending aswell as fittings which is necessaryin case of single valves.
3) Presently, SEITZ is developingthe new generation 5 which willhave a sturdy and solid constructionwith a wider temperature range(ambient – 40 °C up to 60 °C) toensure proper and smooth working functions even with non-filtered gases and/or impureenvironmental conditions. Our customers are demanding us toreplace the presently used ballvalves which are still used forthese special conditions to avoidcomplicated pneumatic suppliesand compressors.
4) SEITZ would like to supply standard valves because only highmanufacturing quantities areresulting in economical prices. But, of course, SEITZ is open forany special technical demand. Wehave the experience, technicalknow-how as well as the test facilities in Switzerland to developspecial solutions together with ourcustomers.

1) OEM NGV manufacturersshould invest more in the marketingof their NGV’s. The driving forcefor the end user is the economicadvantage in comparison tousing liquid fuels, environmentaladvantages are welcome butnot the crucial point.
2) The Automatic Cylinder ValveC350 due to it’s mature technologyof high reliability, lifetime andcorrosion resistance paired with compact unequalled highperformance solenoid valve.
3) Since beginning of 2012Rotarex proposes to the OEMmarket the new mechatronicpressure regulator GALAXY.High precision and high dynamiccontrol of the outlet pressure bythe engine ECU is the concept ofthe future.
4) CNG infrastructure in Europeshould grow from the actualNorth South axis (Scandinavia,Germany, Switzerland , Austria,Italy) into Eastern and Westerndirection. No NGV’s without filling infrastructure.

May 2012 Gas Vehicles Report24
1) The world crisis effected significantly the market of CNGvehicles. While on the one hand the salesof cars dropped drastically, leading to a drop in percentage ofsales of CNG vehicles, OEMs onthe other, are tentatively increasing the range of CNG vehicles to attract those long distance drivers penalized by thenon-stop increase of conventionalfuels.
We are looking at promising openings of new markets inMiddle East, Asia Pacific region ,Africa, South America, U.S.A.There are ambitious programsboth for Heavy Duty transport andfor passenger cars, conversionsfrom diesel to CNG, 0 km CNGconversions and good quality aftermarket. This revitalization ofCNG and NGV as an alternativefuel depends on different factors, according to different nations: fuelcost savings, emissions, to reducedependence on oil. In somenations the use of CNG is growingsteadily while other countries arestill finding the most appropriateway to implement the use of CNG.
The CNG industry now facesstrong challenges to give impulseto the use of CNG as the alternative fuel for excellence atleast for the next 20 years.
There is need to continuouslypromote safety equipment, newrefueling infrastructures, tax andprice CNG policies in order tokeep strong attention on the emission related issues.
Above all, however, we need topromote CNG together withEnergy Companies, Governments,Transport Companies, Fleet
Owners, Media and Press, as thebest alternative fuel choice in orderto reduce dependency on oil and toprovide a clean, cheap, safe fuel forpublic transport and passenger cars.
In upcoming countries, the high priceof the filling stations means thatCNG cars will likely be purchased byfleet owners for the foreseeablefuture. Fleet cars drive in somewhatpredictable orbits relatively close tohome base, which cuts down on theneed for filling stations. To promotethe use of private CNG cars there isthe need to expand usability withportable and modular filling stations, that only need an electrical connection and a gas connection.
2) At the moment our most requested product is our Global HDvalve. This market is growing fast inmost Countries and it is going torepresent a very high share of thefuture CNG business. Cavagna Groupdedicated specific efforts to the HDmarket, developing a high performingand extremely safe automatic CNGcylinder valve for heavy duty vehicles,Cavagna Global HD is suitable forcomposite cylinders type 3 and type 4.
As a matter of fact there are stillimportant issues which requireattention, such as lack of filling stations, extra storage space forextended driving range — but the
environmental and economic bene-fits are such that more and morecities, governments and business-es are fitting their fleets of trucks andbuses CNG systems. Clean-burn-ing natural gas has become the alternative fuel of choice for tran-sit, refuse, and many other heavy-duty vehicles.
3) We have several new projects, but at the moment I cannot dis-close the details.
4) Cavagna Group is the most reliable partner for OEMs and for co-design projects. The Group relies on eight verticallyintegrated production units in Italyand seven other spread on thefive continents. Thanks to a distri-bution network of an additional fif-teen commercial business units, theGroup deals with more than 110countries worldwide. So we canoffer “just in time” delivery due tothe possibility to stock parts inalmost any part of the world. Our Area Sales Managers areeither mother language, or theyhave their area long lived-in experience to better integrate with customers from all over theworld. Customer care and satisfaction are Cavagna Groupmain targets!

1) We believe there should begreater incentives in form of taxsavings for natural gas vehiclemanufacturers, subsidies for buyers of natural gas vehicles andgreater support for natural gasfuel station producers. This wouldmake it more appealing to buy anatural gas vehicle, thereby easingthe burden on our environment asexhaust fumes are reduced.
2) Customer-specific high-pressure solenoid valvemanifolds in a wide range ofdesigns, from 2-fold through to 6-fold high-pressure solenoid valvemanifolds. The reason for this isobvious. Our customers are gaining added value through theuse of our valve manifolds, through the dramatic reduction of assembly parts, such as high-pressure screw connectionsand pipes, and in reduced assembly times and the minimisation of potential leakagepoints. What's more, our solutions offer a highly attractiveprice/performance ratio, even for individual items.
3) Absolutely, innovation is our“bread and butter”! We are, forexample, working on a solution to
convert existing petrol pumps withpneumatically actuated ball valvesto use our high-pressure solenoidvalves instead, all of that with theleast possible expenditure for customers. This delivers a savingin terms of service for the operator as control air is nolonger required.
4) Buschjost is focused on customised solutions, always trying to deliver added value forour customers. As a part of theNorgren Group, our aim is to provide Engineering Advantage, but this does not begin and endwith engineering! It’s about theadvantages we offer as a business. Today, we’re a globalorganisation, with a presence in75 countries offering exceptionallocal service through our KeyAccount Managers and sectorspecialists. We work as oneNorgren, connecting our expertiseand thinking across teams, departments, businesses andcountries. We connect with ourcustomers to understand theirneeds and then we connect ourservices and technologies to create innovative solutions whichsolve their challenges. At Buschjost we also have ourown in-house engineering and production, enabling us torespond quickly to customerrequests and market developments. Also very importantis that Buschjost can offer valveswith ATEX approved solenoids andNEMA Class 1 Division 1approval, and which are certifiedfor use at temperatures as low as-40°C and have EEx d approval.

1) In ouropinion themarketshould behavemorefocus onquality thenon the price.Good quality producedin companies whichare certified in accordance toISO TS 16949 is a fundamental building block for a secure useof CNG in passenger cars, busses and trucks all over theworld. On the other hand, weneed financial incentives for the purchase of CNG vehicles fromthe governments.
2) As we have for differentapplications different valves inour product range, there is nospecific product that wouldhave priority at our customers. It depends on the countries andtheir present regulationswhether magnetic or manualvalves, with or without PPRDwill be ordered.
3) Yes for sure. We are designing at the moment a lowcost automotive valve withreduced requirements, but withthe same safety devices as allof our products for SouthAmerican market and Far East.

1) High interest, high diffusion, low global coordination and singleinterests pass over common andpolitical strategies. It could beone of the biggest actual andfuture business activities, but anunclear worldwide drawing is creating big confusion. The fieldneeds guide lines that will notallow single Country interpretationand rules. The future of alternativefuel technologies is closed from aspasmodic race to low price: thistypical automotive approach maybe acceptable only with fixed universal technical rules, otherwise
it will generate compromises leadingto risks, and passing a distortedimage of the whole sector.
2) MATRIX Automotive Division develops, produces and marketscomponents (injectors, pressurereducers, filters, etc.) in theendothermic engines fed with alternative fuels (CGN-natural gas,LPG, H2). The company will also enter into a strategic alliance with Connexxionat the same time. Connexxion will operate this concession for a period of 10 years under the name of Breng. The contract volume of nearly 12 million m3 per year of Biogas makes this thelargest public transport concession for refined biogas in theNetherlands and unique in Europe. At the end of this year, 225 buseswill be powered by Biogas in the cityarea of Arnhem/Nijmegen in theNetherlands. The existing refuellinglocation in Nijmegen, where 75buses have filled up with natural gas since 2009, will continue to bethe home base for approximately110 of these buses. The addition ofa further 115 city buses means that three new refuelling locationswill be constructed in Arnhem,Duiven and Huissen. CNG Net partner Ballast Nedam IPM isresponsible for the construction of these refuelling locations whichwill be purpose-designed to matchthe specific refuelling patterns of the buses. By the end of 2012, all 225 buses will fill up with Biogas supplied by CNG Net.

The reducer isa key point ofseparatinghigh and low
pressure phase. In the high pressurephase the reducer mechanically controls pressure decrease, resulting in relatively constant lowpressure level. Most typical applications require pressure regulator - reducer, which means thatpressure on the outlet is mechanicallydecreasing in a controlled manner. Asa result relatively constant pressure isobtained on the outlet.
Two the most populartypes of the reducers:
• Single-stage reducer
Single-stage reducers are popular inmost applications, which requirepressure on the outlet to be relativelyconstant during small fluctuations ofsupply pressure.Single-stage reducers are more susceptible to the impact of changesin inlet pressure (SPE – SupplyPressure Effect) than the twin-stageregulators. The decisive factor inchoosing the type of reducer arepressure fluctuations in the highpressure. SPE is the ability of theregulator to adapt to changes inpressure on the supply of high pressure to the regulator. Basicallythe change in pressure at the entrymoves to change the output pressurethe more the larger the SPE. In addition, please note that the effectof SPE increases the output pressureof the reducer as the falling pressurein the tank! SPE depends mainly onthe design of the regulating mechanism of the regulator. In applications where high pressureat the inlet is not subject to largechanges, even with high SPE regulator will provide a steady streamof low pressure outlet. Therefore,single-stage regulator will provide astable outlet pressure only when supply power of high pressure is stable. And this is the biggest disadvantage of single-stage regulators, when economic factors likethe production price make it popular.
• Twin-stage reducer.
The twin-stage regulator consists of atwo single-stage regulators seriallyconnected and made in one piece. The first regulator reduces inletpressures up to the intermediatevalue between the pressure at theinlet and outlet pressure isrequired. The second regulator reducesthe intermediate pressure tothe required pressure at theoutlet. By using two-stage reduction SPE reaches very low values. This allows to use the regulator especially forCNG, where pressure inthe tank varies to a largeextent. The sample of such a regulator is VR-C type of reducer, produced by FHT VERSUSGAS.“When emptying the tank pressure atthe inlet to the regulator drops from200 bar to 10 bar. In this case thevariability of inlet pressure is 190 bar.If the target pressure at the outletshould be around 2 bars, with thetwin-stage regulator it will vary from 2to 1.7 bar. Such small changes are dueto serially connected two regulators sothat the SPE multiplies. SPE coefficientsfor twin-stage regulators are notavailable for single-stage design. In

other words, if the same KIT wouldbe equipped with only a single-stageregulator, the outlet pressure of regulator would change from 2 barto 3.8 bar. This phenomenon is verydisadvantageous.” said Mr. KrzysztofGortych – main technician of FHTVERSUSGAS.
