As our bodies age, it is important to continue developing, nourishing and car-ing for all parts of who we are. Three experts from Covenant HealthCare will walk you through the mind and our emotions, how regular exercise can prevent (and in some instances treat) diseases and disorders, and the impact of spirituality on our health.

Amanda Schafer-Johnson, PhD, ABPP-CN will explore the complex matters of the mind. As people age, they commonly encounter shoulder pain. While many conditions are amendable to non-operative treatment, surgical procedures may be required. To best understand what is causing pain, a clear understanding of anatomy and potential conditions is essential. Dr. Colleen Linehan will provide a basic review of the shoulder, its anatomy, common shoulder disorders, and treatment options. Dr. Linehan is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Covenant Center for Advanced Orthopaedic Surgery. As a general orthopaedic surgeon, she specializes in the evaluation of bone and joint injuries; shoulder and knee arthroscopy; pediatric and adult fracture care, and joint replacements. As a former Harvard hockey player and team cap-tain, she has a special interest in the shoulder. Science, Nature & Health

Overview of SVSU’s SBESI (101)The Saginaw Bay Environmental Science Institute was established by SVSU in 2013. It is an umbrella organization which includes multiple watershed research and development efforts involving numerous faculty, students, and disciplines. It works to develop educa-tional, scientific, governmental, and com-munity partnerships in the watershed through mutually beneficial collaborations. In the first class, Dave Karpovich, the Institute’s director and H.H. Dow Endowed Chair in Chemistry, will give an overview of the Insti-tute’s numerous projects and partnerships. In the second session, Dave Stanton, an SVSU biology professor, will discuss his project, which involves DNA fingerprinting of wall-eye to determine genetic diversity. The final session will be held on SVSU’s Cardinal II, a pontoon which serves as a classroom and research vessel. Participants will be split into a morning and afternoon group for the cruise as the boat only holds ten. The class maxi-mum is 18.Fridays: September 12, 19 & 26 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C128/Off Site

Fun with Fungi (102)If you think hunting for morels in the spring is all there is to “mushrooms,” you will be surprised at the diversity of fungi in the fall woods! In this three-part class, naturalist Janea Little, of Little’s Touch of Nature, will introduce you to the complex life history

of various fungi, and teach you some of the basics of identifying them. The first two sessions will be in the classroom, where with slides and specimens, Janea will cover everything from slime moulds and jelly fungi to the better-known “sac” fungi (aka, morels and their relatives) and gilled “shrooms.” The third class will be a field trip to hunt for mushrooms, meeting offsite at a natural area in the region. The exact location will be determined by where the best mushrooms are sprouting at the time. Although edibility of various mushrooms will be discussed, this class is NOT meant as a replacement for a “poisonous versus edible” class.Tuesdays: September 16, 23 & 30 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C129/Off- Site

Fingerprints & Firearms (103)Since the early 1900s, fingerprint detection and analysis has been one the most com-mon and important forms of crime scene forensic investigation. In fact, more crimes have been solved through the use of finger-prints than any other evidence. The use of firearm evidence will also be discussed. You will learn how these types of evidence were used to solve some specific cases, includ-ing some local ones. The class will be led by Elaine Dougherty, a Forensic Scientist with the Michigan State Police Bridge-port Lab who is also an adjunct professor for the SVSU criminal justice program. Please note that this class may include some graphic photographs.Wednesdays: October 22, 29 & November 5 • 6 - 8 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C129

You’ll take a trip through the “Everglades” of Michigan with Wil Hufton III, owner of Johnny Pan-ther Quests Adventure Trips. You’ll travel through one of the largest bald eagle habi-tats and migratory flyways in the Midwest. Hufton has explored the ecology of this region for over 40 years and has a first-hand understanding of what is happening to our watershed. Sign up quickly -- each cruise is limited to 10 participants. Both trips depart from the Saginaw Marina off Lee Street in Saginaw. You will receive a letter with logistical information about one week prior to the trip.Saturday early cruise (104): October 4 • 8 - 11 a.m.Saturday late cruise (105): October 4 • 4 - 7 p.m.Price: $42 Members; $62 Non-Members Room: Off-Site

Plumbing the Mysteries of Microbes (106)Much interest has recently been generated by the discovery of planets orbiting stars far beyond the eight planets of our own solar system and by the intriguing possibility of life on some of those exoplanets. However, mysteries at the macrocosmic level are not the only ones to grab and hold our atten-tion. Right here on Earth, by focusing on life viewed under the microscope, scien-tific research and the newest technologies have revealed mysteries at the microscopic level equally as profound – challenging human understanding and demanding further exploration. This class, facilitated by OLLI member and retired science teacher, Bob Enszer, will consider the world of microbes and their relationships to humankind. We will investigate the variety of microbes in the invisible realm, the saga of germ theory in human history, the arms race between ourselves and microbes, the strategies that microbes use to survive and thrive, the hu-man combative immune system, microbes as weapons of war, and microbes as nature’s allies. Mondays: November 17, 24, December 1 & 8 •1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

Manifest What You Desire: Creating Vision Boards (107)Have you ever wondered how some people seem to be able to manifest whatever they want in a relatively short time? Join Linda Thomas, RN CBT QNRT, in an interactive and creative class where we will explore how to manifest what we want in our lives. In the first class, Linda will present informa-tion regarding how our thoughts and inner beliefs affect our external world and our ability to manifest our goals and desires. We will explore how a vision board can be used as a tool to assist us in creating a future that we consciously and intentionally choose. In the second and third class, we will be creat-ing our own individual vision boards and discussing other methods to attract what we desire in our lives. During the first class, you will be provided a list of supplies you will need to bring to create your vision board.Mondays: September 15, 22 & 29 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C129

active lifestyle for people of all ages. It’s never too late to begin a path of improved health!Thursdays: September 18, 25 & October 2 • 4 - 6 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C129

Win-Win Solutions to Resolving Conflict in Today’s World (109)From playgrounds to elder care to global sit-uations, people are being trained to mediate conflicts for a win-win outcome. Given that conflict is an inevitable part of life, we will discuss pros and cons of nonviolent conflict resolution, see mediation in action, and learn basic skills that can be effective in dealing with real-life situations. Peer Mediation and related skills have been effectively prac-ticed in schools. Movies & Literature

A Look at Jorge Borges: Labyrinths (156)In this class we will explore the life and works of Jorge Louis Borges. He writes unique little essays and short narratives which are great because of their intelli-gence, their wealth of invention, and their tight, almost mathematical style. Argentine by birth and temperament, Borges cre-ates outside time and space, imaginary and symbolic worlds. He is akin to Kafka, Poe, sometimes to Henry James and Wells, and always to Valery by the abrupt projection of his paradoxes in what has been called “his private metaphysics.” We will use the book Labyrinths (New Directions Paperback), any edition. Please read the preface and pages one - 36 for the first class. Should your edition differ from the class leader’s, titles for the first class include: Tion, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, The Garden of Forking Paths, and The Lottery in Babylon. The class will be led by OLLI member Steve Parkhurst.Wednesdays: October 1, 8 & 15 • 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C129

Watching Movies With Plato: Ethical Themes in Films (158)This course is dedicated to the discussion of ethical topics as presented in contemporary films. In Plato’s dialogues, Socrates claims that an unexamined life is not worth living. This then leads to the ultimate question, how ought we live? Today, compared to the Dia-logues, film is an even more powerful force shaping our cultural and social ideals. In this class, contemporary films will be viewed and discussed to examine their ethical themes. Our first two films will include Stories We Tell and Philomena. The class will be involved in deciding on the last two films which might include Her, Mud or Amour. Discussion will be led by OLLI member, Larry Kammer, who has worked in health care and higher education.Mondays: October 6, 13, 20 & 27 • 1 - 4:30 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

downs of our lives. It is a practice which helps to create a more peaceful mind and heart open to deeper wisdom. Controlled clinical studies of mindfulness-based medita-tion have documented reduction of physi-cal and emotional distress and increase in greater health and well being. Our leader is Nan Spence, who for the past 11 years has studied mindfulness with respected teachers and has been authorized to teach it by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Nan holds a Master’s Degree in Theology with an emphasis in spirituality. Buddhist Psychology: The Six Perfections (162)Among the many practices carried forward by the living traditions of Buddhist mind-training are the “Six Perfections” or “Six Paramitas.” A person who wishes to develop on the Path of compassionate action and wisdom relies on the Six Perfections: 1) generosity; 2) fidelity to moral precepts; 3) patience as the antidote to anger; 4) resolute effort; 5) mental concentration; and 6) wis-dom. We will discuss the Perfections from a traditional Indo-Tibetan Buddhist viewpoint, and consider how they are relevant to our contemporary lives. The class will be led by SVSU psychology professor Eric De Vos, who also leads the OLLI Buddhist Psychol-ogy Interest Group.Tuesdays: October 7, 14, 21 & 28 • 3 - 5 p.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129

History & Philosophy of God (163)Human beings appear to have spiritual brains – brains that are capable of feeling deeply connected to something greater than themselves. Spirituality also appears to have positive, and sometimes negative, effects on people’s mental and physical health. Spiri-tual practices, beliefs and phenomena are expressed and experienced in all kinds of ways and now modern neuroscience can offer new insights into the meaning and nature of spirituality. We will look at the brain’s action in near death experiences, myth develop-ment, revelation, salvation philosophy, and many more interesting topics. We will also study the role the brain has in religion and mental health, religion and brain dysfunction,

and religion and health, to name a few. We will use a Teaching Company DVD which features Dr. Andrew Newberg, a neuroimag-ing specialist. The class will be led by OLLI member Ron Taylor.Thursdays: October 23, 30, November 6, 13 & 20 9:30 a.m. - NoonPrice: $32 Members; $62 Non-Members Room: C129

Death and Dying: An Exploration of Mind and Medical Ethics (164)In this class we’ll interweave and explore a number of questions about the mind and medical ethics in the context of dying and the dead. In session one we’ll explore ethical controversies surrounding the brain death protocol and the cardio-pulmonary crite-ria. Is one dead when the body is alive and psychological states forever cease? No one wants to die badly, and the war against death is not winnable, yet most Americans die in an intensive care unit (ICU). In the next session, we will explore the notion of a good death in the context of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) and dying in an ICU. When a patient refuses a life-sustaining treatment they hasten their death; PAS also hastens death. What are the ethically relevant differ-ences? This thought-provoking class will be led by SVSU philosophy professor James Hitt.Tuesdays: October 28 & November 410 a.m. - NoonPrice: $18 Members; $36 Non-Members Room: C129

World Political Update (177)The world seems to be increasingly dynamic and in many respects less stable. Twice each year we analyze recent developments in political events around the globe. Since our last course we have witnessed continued de-stabilization in Ukraine, the horrific actions of Boko Haram in Nigeria, bloodshed in the Central African Republic, the continuing carnage in Syria, and the most recent (and predicted) demise of Iraq as a functioning nation state, now under assault by ISIL. In this course we take a deeper dive into the dynamics behind the surface treatment given to these important issues in the media. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.Fridays: September 19, 26 & October 31:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C224

Key Issues in the Supreme Court’s 2013-14 Term (178)The Supreme Court is the final arbiter of what our Constitution says and means, and each term it is called upon to decide impor-tant questions that balance the powers of our governments and the rights of our citizens. Similarly to other courses led by Eric Gilb-ertson, course discussion will focus on rul-ings from recent cases decided by the United States Supreme Court in the 2013-14 term. These will include cases involving political contributions, prayer in public meetings and events, affirmative action, capital punishment and other controversial and critical issues. Gilbertson returns to campus this fall as a professor.Tuesdays: October 14 & 21 • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.Price: $18 Members; $36 Non-Members Room: Banquet C, Curtiss Hall

The Enigma of Israel (179)Israel is often portrayed by presidents, sena-tors and congressmen as “America’s closet ally” in the Middle East and a beacon of democracy in an unstable part of the world. Failing to endorse the policies of Israel may result in political suicide for any aspiring politician. Each year the United States pro-vides more foreign aid to Israel than to any other nation in the world. Your tax dollars contribute an enormous portion of the annual defense budget for Israel. But what do we receive in return? What is the “true” cost to America? In this course we will explore the complex political lobbying and public rela-tions campaigns waged by Israel in Washing-ton. The class will be led by Jim Johnson, an adjunct political science professor and attorney.Fridays: November 7, 14, & 21 •1:30 - 3:30 p.m.Price: $22 Members; $44 Non-Members Room: C224

Issues in the News (180)This class will discuss various issues cur-rently in the news. There will be two topics each class period. A 15-20 minute video from TED will present one speaker’s view of the issue. Discussion of the issue will follow each talk. Likely topics will be the rise of the new global rich, how income inequality harms society, should we trust the market system with our civic life, the one-party po-litical system in China, reforming our politi-cal system, science denial, good leadership, and tools for a better world. The class will be moderated by OLLI member Carol Gohm.Mondays: November 24, December 1, 8, & 15 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.Price: $27 Members; $54 Non-Members Room: C129
