Hecreatedustobeimmortalandtoliveinharmonyinthegarden.Becauseoforiginalsin,however,andsubsequentlyourownsinfuldecisions,wenowtastethestingofdeath.EventheSonofGodunderwentdeath,allforthepurposesofourredemption,sothatwecouldagainenjoyenterallife.BecauseofthisdisruptioninGod’screation,thisiswhyweseeblackwornatourMassestoday,whytheAltarisshroudedinpurple,andtheliturgiestakeonasorrowfultone. Today,deathhasturnedintoacelebrationofone’slife,butwemustrememberwhatdeathisandrememberthatdeathisnotoriginaltohumanity.Wehaveachoice,wemaysufferourconsequencesinthislife,orwewillsuffertheminthenext.ItwillnotbeGodwhojudgesus,butitwillbeourownconscienc-esthatwilljudgeuswhenwestandbeforethejudg-mentseatofGod.TodaythewholeChurchpraysforthesoulsofallthefaithfuldepartedwhoareunder
goingtheirpurificationstostandbeforeGod.Theycannotintercedeforthemselves,sothattheChurchonearthmakesintercessionforthem.Mayweespe-ciallyprayforourfamilyandfriends,andforthosesoulswhohavenooneelsetoprayforthem.IleaveuswiththisreflectionfromSt.CatherineofGenoa: “AndthusthisblessedSoul,illuminatedbythedivineray,said:WouldthatIcoulduttersostrongacrythatitwouldstrikeallmenwithterror,andsaytothem:Owretchedbeings!whyareyousoblindedbythisworldthatyoumake,asyouwillfindatthehourofdeath,noprovisionforthegreatnecessitythatwillthencomeuponyou?YoushelteryourselvesbeneathyourhopeinthemercyofGod,whichyouunceas-inglyexalt,notseeingthatitisyourresistancetohisgreatgoodnesswhichwillbeyourcondemnation.Hisgoodnessshouldconstrainyoutohiswill,notencour-ageyoutopersevereinyourown.Sincehisjusticeisunfailingitmustbeinsomewayfullysatisfied.Havenottheboldnesstosay:IwillgotoconfessionandgainaplenaryindulgenceandthusIshallbesaved.”
