GAME 10: NO. 3/2 OKLAHOMA VS. HAWAII (DIAMOND HEAD CLASSIC SEMIFINALS) GAME NOTES

WEDNESDAY’S GAME BASICS No. 3 Oklahoma continues play at the 2015 Diamond Head Classic versus Hawaii in the winner’s bracket Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT in Hono-lulu inside Stan Sheriff Center. OU is 1-1 all-time against the Rainbow Warriors. OU advanced by beating Washington State on Tuesday, 88-60, while UH defeated Northern Iowa, 68-52, in the final game of day one. Wednesday’s contest will air on the Sooner Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM “The Franchise” in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa) with Toby Rowland and Scott Thompson announcing. The game will be televised by ESPN2 with Roxy Bernstein and Brad Daughtery calling the action.

WASHINGTON STATE REVISITED

Oklahoma improved to 9-0 on the season with its win over Wash-ington State on Tuesday night. It’s OU’s best start to a season since the 2008-09 campaign (started 12-0 that year). After leading by seven at halftime, 38-31, the Sooners outscored the Cougars by a 50-29 margin in the second half to secure the 88-60 win. Oklahoma has never trailed at the half this season. OU, which entered the contest ranked No. 2 in the country in field goal percentage defense, held the Cougars to .348 (24-69) shooting, including .238 (5-21) from 3-point range. Washington State entered the game ranked 10th nationally in field goal percentage shooting (.506). Four Sooners scored in double digits, marking the fifth time this season Oklahoma has had four players record double figure performances. OU has had at least three players score 10 or more points in all nine games. OU, which led by as many as 32 in the game, shot 10-23 (.435) from 3-point range on the night. Oklahoma entered the contest ranked second nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.477). Oklahoma improved to 7-0 this season when outrebounding its opponents by outboarding WSU by a 42-32 clip. The Sooner bench outscored the Cougar reserves by a 34 to 22 clip. With the victory, OU advances to play Hawaii (8-1) on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 8 p.m. CT (ESPN2) inside Stan Sheriff Center. Buddy Hield led all scorers with 25 points (8-13 FG, 5-8 3FG, 4-4 FT). It marked the third straight game of 25 or more points for the senior. The Bahamas native is now averaging a Big 12-best 23.7 points this season. It also marked the fifth game this season Hield has knocked down at least four treys. Also scoring in double figures for Oklahoma was Isaiah Cousins (13), Dante Buford (11) and Jordan Woodard (10). It marked the sixth consecutive game Cousins has scored in double digits. The 11 points marked a career high for the freshman Buford. Ryan Spangler led the Sooners with eight rebounds on the night. On the season, the senior is averaging 9.8 boards per game. Khadeem Lattin added five rebounds, marking the eighth consecutive game the sophomore has recorded four or more boards. Jordan Woodard and Isaiah Cousins paced Oklahoma with six and five assists, respectively. Cousins has 27 assists in the last four outings.

SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WARRIORS Hawaii is 8-1 overall on the season under first year head coach Eran Ganot. The school is off to its best start to a season since 2004-05 (8-0). The Rainbow Warriors are led in scoring by Aaron Valdes, who is averaging 17.8 points. He ranks second in the Big West in both scoring and field goal percentage (.570). Also averaging double figure scoring for UH are Stefan Jankovic and Isaac Fleming with 14.5 and 11.9 points per game, respectively. OU HEAD COACH LON KRUGER Lon Kruger was named Oklahoma’s 14th head men’s basketball coach on April 1, 2011.

RETURNING PLAYERS Oklahoma returned 75 percent of its scoring, 69 percent of its rebounding and 83 percent of its assists from last season’s NCAA Sweet 16 squad. Has played in 10 career games during OU career (4 this season), posting 3 points and 1 assist. A walk-on who averaged 7.8 points and 4.4 assists per game as a senior at Norman HS. Sister (Danielle) lettered for OU women’s hoops team in 1996-97 (Sherri Coale’s 1st season). Father (Gary) was student manager on OU’s 1999-00 women’s team (reached Sweet 16).
