Restoration work to begin on Shildon Arches The restoration of Shildon’s three decorative arches is set to begin next week. The scheme to repair and upgrade the three struc- tures follows a consultation exercise at the end of last year, which saw more than 83 per cent of those who took part voting for the arches to be maintained and repaired. The three metal structures were erected in the town’s Main Street, Church Street and Town Square in 2000 as part of the millennium cel- ebrations. However, their condition has since dete- riorated, with flaking paint and rusting metalwork now clearly visible. As a result, there was a public outcry in May last year when it was revealed that Durham County Council intended to demolish the arches as part of a town centre regeneration project ahead of the visit of Flying Scotsman to the town. However, the county council relented after an energetic community campaign, led by towns- folk under the Save Our Arches banner and local councillor, Garry Hunting- ton, forced a second public consultation at which 83% of respondents voted to retain the arches. Almost 350 people respond- ed to the consultation ques- tions, with the majority voting for them to remain. A petition to save the arches was also submitted by the campaigners, containing over 1,000 signatures. The improvement works, which start on Monday 7th August, are expected to take eight weeks to complete and will see all three repainted and treated with anti-corrosion paint on-site. To take part, all children need to do is to head to their local library where they will be given a collector folder to keep a record of their reading journey.
Still time to take on the Summer Reading Challenge
There is still time for children from Shildon to sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.Four to 11 year olds are challenged to borrow and read any six library books during the summer holidays, a time when chil-
dren’s literacy skills tradi-tionally dip. This year’s theme is ‘Animal Agents’, based on a detec-tive agency staffed by all kinds of clever animals – furry, scaly and slippery – who are out to crack a case at the library with a little help from their friends. Tony Ross, the UK’s best-selling children’s illustra-tor (creator of the Little Princess books, illustrator of the Horrid Henry series by Francesca Simon, and of books by David Walliams and Claire Balding), has created this year’s exclu-sive artwork. Sue Wilkinson, CEO of The Reading Agency, which organises the Summer Reading Challenge country-wide said: “At The Reading Agency, we believe that everything changes when we read and we know from our research how much fun families and children have when taking part in the Challenge. This year we hope the wonderful characters created for us by Tony Ross will inspire more
children than ever to take part and make use of their local library throughout the summer and beyond.”To take part, all children need to do is to head to their local library where they will be given a collec-tor folder to keep a record of their reading journey. As children read at least six library books over the summer, they collect stickers which will help them crack the clues and help the Animal Agents find out what’s really been going on behind the scenes! Councillor Joy Allen, Durham County Council cabinet member for trans-formation, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun and engaging way for children to continue their reading through the holidays, when traditionally books are not always high priority. Our libraries offer a wide range of activities through the holidays for children and we would en-courage parents to make use of these free facilities to entertain their children and make the most of the added educational benefits that these activities offer.”The Summer Reading Chal-lenge is being run alongside a programme of associated events, at libraries across the county until Saturday 9th September. A full list of the libraries can be found at www.durham.gov.uk/libraries.

Arches restoration underwayContinued from page 1.
The original columns will also be replaced using Dunhouse stone, with each one engraved with the name of the street it stands on.Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, said: “The arches are clearly very popular among residents, who voted overwhelmingly in favour of retaining them when we asked them last year.“We were more than happy to listen to their feedback
and are now undertaking work that should preserve the arches for many years to come.“As well as repairing and protecting the metalwork, we’re also rebuilding the columns with stone, which will improve the visual ap-pearance and enhance the project.”Residents and motorists are being advised that Main Street and Church Street may be closed on Sunday, 13th August to enable scaf-folding to be erected and on Sunday, 20th August to allow the scaffolding to be removed.

Colour you life - at Greenfield Arts
Greenfield Arts, based on the Newton Aycliffe campus of Greenfield School, is inviting readers to an ex-hibition by members of the Colour your Life art group. The exhibition will showcase approximately 60 pieces of work produced by talented amateur artists, who all attend the Monday morning Colour your Life sessions at the Pioneering Care Centre in Newton
Aycliffe. Colour your Life is a social prescribing project funded by Durham County Council and provides access to activities for the improve-ment of mental health and the development of emo-tional resilience. Sonia Burn is a keen and talented artist and started as a volunteer, she is now employed by PCP to oversee the Monday member’s art group. She states that, “There are so many talented people within our art group, this is a great opportunity to showcase their work and
hopefully make them feel proud. “Some pieces will be for sale and others will be temporarily borrowed from ‘pride of place’ in their homes. “Colour your Life is not just about making art, it’s about making friendships and this exhibition shows the diversity of the artwork produced by the group.” For more information call 01325 379048 or email [email protected]. In the fourth concert in this year’s Bishop Auckland Music Society season, the audience in St Andrew’s Church, South Church, were able to enjoy a wide-ranging programme from clarinettist Matthew Scott and his very able accompa-nist Daniel King Smith.Pianist and music lover John Lowles, after enjoying the concert, commented, “Both are very skilful mu-sicians in their own right; but they also worked together particularly well to make a special musical partnership. “Their programme was very varied and interest-ing, with Martinu, Debussy, Arthur Benjamin and Vaughan Williams’ beauti-ful “6 Studies in English Folk Song” in the first half. In the second, Matthew played the basset clarinet, to get deeper sounds, in Schubert’s “Arpeggione” sonata, so called because the composer wrote the
work for that now rare instrument. Matthew also played it in Ravel’s evoca-tive Pavane for a dead princess.“The two remaining pieces were great fun – Rosenb-latt’s Carmen fantasy and Bela Kovacs’ After you, Mr Gershwin.“Everyone agreed it had been a very successful concert.”Before next year’s very promising programme, there is one more concert scheduled for this year: on Friday, September 8th at 7.30pm the distinguished pianist Noriko Ogawa will be performing works by Mozart, Chopin, Takemit-su, Debussy and Prokofiev. This will be a concert not to be missed.Tickets cost £13.50 and are available from Brotherton’s Music (opposite Morrison’s)or call Brian Varley on 01388 606075. They will also be available on the door, priced at £15.

Mayor of Shildon, Cllr Shirley Quinn, went along to Granville Avenue on Wednesday 26th July, to meet a lovely couple cel-ebrating their Sapphire Wedding Anniversary.Ken and Lydia Vasey were married at St John’s Church when Ken was on leave from the Army in 1952. Lydia recalls it was a very hot day, which was also Durham Miners’ Gala. They celebrated after-wards at Old Shildon Club with family and friends. Lydia was 19 and Ken 21 when they married and still have a strong and loving marriage today. They have lived in various houses around Shildon but settled in Granville Avenue around 30 years ago. Together they had three children, Andrew, Andrea and the late Jacqueline. Andrea has two daugh-ters Leah and Aysha, of whom Ken and Lydia are extremely proud, as they are keen roller skaters and have won many medals and trophies alongside
Shildon couple celebrate 65 happy years together
Andrea.Ken worked as a fitter at Shildon Wagon Works and Shildon Forge until it closed, while Lydia worked at Pages Clothing Factory, but over the years took on many jobs including dinner lady and kitchen assistant at Sunnydale School. Lydia also worked in the Police Station, looking after the ‘young juveniles’, as they where called at the time. Lydia got a great deal of satisfaction from this job and remarked that for many years the young people often stopped to talk to her and thank her for putting them back on the right track. Both Ken and Lydia’s passion is their garden, which they have lovingly tendered for many years.
Ken also trained police dogs and won awards for obedience with his Corgis. He also recalls when he won the 200 yards race at The Shildon Show in 1951. Luckily, Lydia still managed to catch her prize!Over the years they have both enjoyed holiday-ing all around England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of White together and with family. The lovely couple cel-ebrated their Anniversary family lunch and tea party.Mayor Quinn presented the lovely couple with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of Shildon Town Council. “We all wish them the very best in their future years together,” said Shirley.

Attendance is a top priority at Greenfield Community College, with students being set a challenge for 2017/18 academic year to make every day count and aim for at least 96% attend-ance.

Shildon win last friendly before new seasonShildon AFC played their last friendly this week before they start their new season. They travelled to Wil-lington FC on Monday 31st July and came away 2 – 1 victors. Early on Shildon were awarded a penalty but ex Shildon keeper Lewis Graham pulled off a fine save from Adam Burnicle.Minutes later, Micky Rae was through but once again Willington keeper Graham made a great stop. Just before half time
however, Micky Rae scored two cracking goals for the Railwaymen. After the break Shildon manager Daniel ‘Bobby’ Moore completely change the team, leaving only Billy Greulich-Smith and keeper Nick Liversedge on the field from the first team. The rest of the players were all Shildon youngsters and those on trial, who all performed admirably. Near the end Willington’s No 10 Connor Winter scored a good consolation goal for the home side.
Shildon have a very diffi-cult first game when they entertain F.A. Vase 2016 winners Morpeth Town on Saturday 5th August in the F.A. Cup. They also finished 3rd in the league. If Shildon can beat Morpeth on Saturday they will be away to either Stockton Town or Guisborough Town in the next round. Shildon’s first league game is away to Dunston on Tuesday 8th August followed by another away game at Jarrow Roofing on Saturday 12th August.
