On Sunday, January 18, 2014, the Omega Eta Zeta Chapter came together to celebrated 94 years of sisterhood, service, scholarship and finer womanhood. The chapter celebrated with dinner at the ALBA restaurant in Quincy, MA where we were able bond and build on a great sisterhood together. During this time, Sorors participated in a community service project to continue the tradition of one of our organization’s principles - service. Every Soror in attendance donated book bags and school supplies to help our “Adopt-A-School program at the Elihu Greenwood Leadership Academy. The chapter believed this was a fantastic way to not only commemorate our organization’s principles but to continue Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream that all children should have an equal education.

During our dinner, we had a special moment when every Soror shared with each other a brief synopsis about their Zeta journey. This was a great way to build on our principle of sisterhood while exchanging gifts. Yes, gifts were exchanged and they were beautiful! This was such an excellent event to celebrate not only with our chapter members but connecting with Sorors who are trying to find a Zeta home.

Partnership SpotlightFather Bill’s & MainSpring

This issue we will be introducing a new section that will be featured in our newsletter – Partnership Spotlight. This section was created to highlight our local partnerships in the state of Massachusetts, specifically the South Shore community. Our first feature spotlight for this issue is Father Bill’s & MainSpring in Quincy, MA.

Father Bill’s Place is a community-based shelter and social service agency that was created by Reverend Williams “Father Bill” McCarthy and other local clergy, community leaders, and social service professionals in 1984. Since 2007, Father Bill’s Place and the MainSpring Coalition for the Homeless have come together to continue their efforts in ending homelessness in the South Shore.

Our partnership began in November 2012, when the chapter served home cooked meals to the homeless following Thanksgiving. The chapter, in conjunction with the Christian Community Church in Neponset, served over 50 patrons who were in need of a home cooked meal to warm up their spirits. In December 2013, the chapter held our first canned food drive to donate to the shelter as our community service event for Founders’ Day. At the conclusion of the drive, the chapter collected and donated over 50 cans of food to the shelter. The chapter recently visited Father Bill’s and served home cooked meals to those in need in December.

We are excited to be working with Father Bill’s and are looking forward to continuing our partnership for many months to come.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. 100 Years of Brotherhood, Scholarship & ServiceBy Joy Ajayi-Carrier

100 years ago, three courageous men came together and created a brotherhood based on the motto of “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity”. On January 9th, the Distinguished Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated came together to honor their courageous Founders: Most Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Most Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Most Honorable Charles I. Brown, for creating the foundation for their organization to day.

In 1914, their Honorable Founders sought to create an organization as ‘a part of ’ the general community rather than ‘apart from’ the general community.” A brotherhood that would be “devoted to the ‘inclusive we’ rather than the ‘exclusive we’.” With the guidance of their 34th International President, Honorable Jonathan Mason, the Brothers of

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated continues to exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. Since its inception, over 150, 000 college-educated men have joined with notable members including Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (first President of Nigeria), Dr. Kwame Nkrumah (first President of Ghana), Civil Rights Activist and current U.S. Congressman John Lewis, Honorable Member President William Jefferson Clinton, and newly inducted Honorable Member Harry Belafonte.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated have created partnerships with organizations such as the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society (ACS), Boy Scouts of America, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Some of these partnerships include their National Initiatives focusing on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Project Vote, Project SEED (Sigma Economic

Empowerment Development Project), and the Sigma Beta Club. Ninety-four years ago, with the guidance of Most Honorable A. Langston Taylor and Honorable Charles R.S. Taylor, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded and thus created the ONLY Constitutionally bounded Fraternity and Sorority.

The Ladies of the Omega Eta Zeta Chapter would like to wish the Brothers around the globe a Happy Centennial Founders’ Day and we wish you a 100 years more!

A New Year, A Healthier You

As the New Year commences, one of the yearly traditions bringing in the New Year are creating New Year resolutions. One of the most popular types of revolves around health and wellness. In a recent study conducted in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, people who created resolutions were 10 times more likely to change their lifestyle than those who didn’t. However, in another study published in the same journal, 54% of individuals who created resolutions failed to complete them after six months. So if you’re wondering, how you can increase your chances of accomplishing your fitness goals, here are a few tips that will help you with your journey:

Tip #1 - Dream BigSelect a long term goal that may seem “impossible” but are achievable. This can range from completing an obstacle course to completing a set of un-assisted pull-ups. You want to select a goal that not only challenges you physically and mentally but can be easily modified as time progresses.

Tip #2 - Baby StepsRome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect to see results overnight. Take your fitness journey one day at a time without obsessing over quick results. Creating short-term goals will allow you to stay on track and act as a checklist towards completing your long term goal. Tip #3 – Tools for SuccessWith today’s technology, scales and gym memberships are no longer the quintessential tools needed to become fit. There are plenty of apps, home fitness programs, and online communities that are focused on providing individuals guidance during their journey. Fitness challenges on social media are one of the newest ways of connecting with people and completing your fitness goals without a $20/month gym membership. Planning is also key to succeed on your journey. From scheduling the time of day for your workouts to planning your meals for the week, planning is an essential tool needed towards completing your journey.

Tip #4 – Tracking Your Results

“Selfies” are not only used to share your personal adventures but a great way to track your results. However, if this is too advance or intrusive for you to incorporate, you may use the good old scale, measuring tape, and journal to track your progress. Just keep in mind that scale lacks the capability of distinguishing fat loss and muscle growth. So if you’re noticing that you’re gaining weight but you’re still fitting into your jeans, you’re heading on the right path towards your fitness goals!

Tip #5 – Reward YourselfOnce you’ve accomplished your short/long term goals, reward yourself ! A great way to do so is by purchasing fitness apparel or treating yourself to massages. This will help keep you motivated and energized towards completing your fitness goals.

Tip #6 - “Dust Yourself Off and Try Again”There are 365 days in the year and no one is perfect. It is always okay to take a short reprieve if you ever feeling overwhelmed or drained. If you are, this may be a sign of overtraining. Everyone will have their bad days but like everything in life, stay focus and keep your eye on the prize. In regards to nutrition, view it as 80/20; focus on eating clean 80% of the week while 20% may be used to treating yourself wisely.I hope these tips will help you in building a foundation on completing your goals. May the New Year bring you a new and healthy you!

Fitness App Spotlight:For this edition of the Health and Wellness Blog, a great app that I would recommend to everyone in aid of completing their fitness goal is an app called Fitocracy. This app allows you to track your exercises, in which you receive points for completing and logging your workouts. Fitocracy is not only an app but an online fitness community that incorporates fitness challenges and offer nutritional and training advice. If you would like more information on this app, please visit https://www.fitocracy.com .

Prematurity Awareness MonthOn November 10th, 2013 the chapter participated in the sorority's annual Zeta Prematurity Awareness Month campaign as part of our partnership with the March of Dimes and their National Prematurity Awareness Month®. The purpose of prematurity awareness is to educate the public on prematurity births and provide support and education to reduce the occurrence of premature births globally. Since its inception in 2003, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. have impacted more than 500,000 men, women, and children in the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

We were welcomed into New Life Christian Ministries in Brockton, MA for a 9:30 am service. The service went well and the church’s pastor, Pastor Orlando Harris, preached a moving sermon about being thankful for what you have even when you believe you have nothing. When the service was over we had the opportunity to distribute brochures and fliers, provided by the March of Dimes, to church members and their guests.

Father Bill’s & MainSpringOn Dec.15th, members of the chapter volunteered at the local shelter of one of our local community partners, Father Bill’s & MainSpring. We arrived around 10:30 am and prepared meals which were to be served to those in need of a home cooked meal. The chapter was able to serve meals to over 50 residents in the community that day.

There will be more work in the next upcoming months as we celebrate Founders Day and Finer Womanhood Month in the beginning of the year. Until then, we hope you enjoy the New Year!

Step into the spotlight Soror and Pop Your Collar! This is the corner where we recognize our chapter’s Sorors for their great work; both in Zeta and in their personal lives. For our second issue of the year, January’s Newsletter Soror Spotlight features Soror Santresa Greenridge!

Santresa Greenidge is a full time student at Northeastern University who will be graduating in May 2014 with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Virginia State University in December 2004. While at VSU, Santresa was a member of the track team and became an All American in the Triple Jump. She later went on to receive her Massage Therapy Certification and worked as a Licensed Massage Therapist at physical therapy clinic in Richmond, VA. Santresa is very passionate about health and wellness. As a Sergeant in the Army Reserves, Santresa felt that it was always important to lead by example. She worked very hard to set an example for her soldiers by maxing out her Army physical fitness tests. She also pushed her soldiers to do so as well. It was that moment when she realized she really enjoyed helping others achieve their fitness goals. She began to lead physical training sessions during drill weekends. Eventually, Santresa became a Certified Personal Trainer and worked as one of the personal trainers for the American Family Fitness Center’s Biggest Loser Program. Santresa decided that it was finally time to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a physical therapist and enrolled in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program at Northeastern University. Over the years she has realized all the benefits of being a physical therapist. She gets to incorporate everything that she is passionate about into one career and really help others improve their quality of life. She hopes to add Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist to her list of certifications and use that to focus her physical therapy career on treating athletes with various sports related injuries.

It is her dream to work as a physical therapist on the US Olympic team with track and field athletes.
