CLCC Family
The Membership has spoken, and loudly! At the Special Meeting heldon September 19th to discuss the proposed Bar Expansion, PatioPlan, and Pool Screen Porch projects, the vote was overwhelmingly infavor of proceeding with the Plan. Very soon, work will commence onthe Patio Plan segment of the work. When finished, there will be noother area Club with as beautiful and functional an outdoor, upscalemeeting place for Members and guests to enjoy the excellent foodand spirits CLCC offers. In early January, work will commence on theBar Expansion, transforming the existing screen room into anextension of the main bar, with all new windows, flooring, doors, heating and cooling, and updated interior. By Spring, 2017, thepoolside Screen Porch will be completed, offering protected seatingfor swimmers by day and casual diners by night.
We have hired Bill Maddock of Maddock Builders, Inc. for the BarExpansion, Patio Outside Bar, and Poolside Screen Porch. Bill is atalented General, Remodeling, and Carpentry Contractor, with vastexperience in all facets of the trade. Our Landscape Contractor isTom Alford, of Unity Landscapes. Tom has presented a gorgeousCrystal Lake Country Club design that incorporates stone, granite, pavers, lighting, fire pits, plants, trees and more. We have the best ofthe best working for us, and the finished result will transform ourfacilities to best in class.
We are lucky to have Luke Wehrheim on the team! When the Boardof Directors promoted Luke from maintenance man to FacilitiesManager last year, it was to recognize Luke for past accomplishmentsand future responsibilities. He has been invaluable in the processtoward fruition of the Expansion Plans, and will be the Club’severyday liaison between Contractors and Board of Directors as theprojects unfold.
Crystal Lake Country Club will indeed have a very differentatmosphere next year. It will become a destination place forMembers, who will bring Guests, who will become Members. You mayrecall a while back I quoted David Bowie’s “Changes” as a musicalreference to what I felt was happening at the Club. It is appropriate,in a lot of ways, to change that theme to the Chamber Brothers“Time Has Come Today”.
Twenty-five Tradition guests have taken advantage of themonth long honorary membership at CLCC. They areplaying golf, dining with their families and guests, whileenjoying the comradery of or current membership. Webelieve this has been a rewarding experience for all, andwe hope to realize new members as a result of thissuccessful endeavor.
In speaking with our members, your Membershipcommittee has learned that membership is becoming tiredof all the different promotions used to increase the numberof members. The Membership committee designed apromotion that we believe will continue to grow ourmembership, The CLCC board of directors agreed and thisprogram went into effect September 1st.

On behalf of the Foundation, thank you for your supportthis year. We have two main events that you’ve supportedthe Fritz Franz Golf Day and the September $25 donationdrive. Thank you.
The Fritz Franz Golf Day is our most important and biggestfunding source (about 80% of our total), and I am pleased toreport that this year’s event was well supported (as you’veprobably seen on the activities updates on the screens inthe bar and foyer). We netted $45,268 running our FF GolfDay, 9-year total to over $360,000. We receive about$9,000 from our September donation drive, and we thankyou for that too.
Last year we awarded $54,400 in scholarships to 19 CLCCstudents (almost $2900 per person), and we donated$10,000 to the WGA’s Evans Scholarship Foundation. Thisyear we have already received 19 applications from ourstudents and the CLCC Foundation will meet next month toreview and award 2016 scholarships. I will provide an updatelater in the year.
So again, thank you for your support this year. We lookforward to your participation in our golf day event next year.
Gratefully,

November 4th is the first Golf Tournament/SocialEvent designed by me. After watching the TGIF andTwilighter events all summer, I was so sad to seethem come to an end. I felt the die-hard membersmight be up for one more golf tournament/socialmixer before the clubs collect dust over the winter. So with room for 9 foursomes we are hosting the firstannual “CLCC Burry Scurry” Golf tournament. Thisis a 9 hole tournament played relay style (see Caseyor Jeff for details). Our shotgun will begin promptlyat 4pm and end when daylight is gone (Daylightsavings is Monday November 7th). We hope to get in9 holes because each hole will have a special warmcocktail to enjoy while playing. We will come up with9 different warm cocktails to offer our Members, sothis should be really fun for all that participate. Youwill get golf and carts, special on-course cocktails, a“CLCC Burry Scurry” logoed stocking cap and foodbuffet after the tournament for a total cost of$55/player. Guests and non-golf members arewelcome to play. Sign your team up soon and makesure your funny bone is in the bag, because this willbe a hoot!
As the golf season begins wind down, the GreensCommittee starts to evaluate how our year went in aquantitative fashion. Led by Steve Van Acker, Greens andGrounds continues to work towards a better golf course. An important part of our evaluation is the communicationthat we receive from you, our membership. There are afew areas that seem to be discussed more than othersthat include bunkers, rough height, playability, trees andoverall condition. But the most discussed by far, has to dowith our greens.
My guess is like most Greens Chairperson, I had lots ofthoughts on the matter at first (and I still do.) But ofcourse, once I started to learn and ask questions aboutour greens, the answers became a bit more complicatedthan the questions. But with that said, I would like toshare my thoughts on our greens. And maybe it may shift, ever so slightly, your own expectations and views.
In the last two years when members come up to me todiscuss our greens, many times the conversation startsout “I played at Course X the other day and their greenswere perfect!” This mean something different todayversus when I started as Greens Chair two years ago.Let me try to explain…
Our greens are a varied mix of age, soil composition andgrass strains. This has a lot to do with the fact ourcourse is almost 100 years old. Our greens were all notcreated in the same year. Throw in the poa annua andthe mixed amount of sun each green receives and youhave to work differently per green to stay healthy andconsistent (a testament to Steve.) But I have come tobelieve that our soil composition causes us the biggestchallenge. The good news is that CLCC resides on avery fertile piece of property. But it also has a lot ofclay that continues to push up towards the surface. Thiscauses Steve and his crew the need to steel tine punchand sand our greens 2 x a month.
USGA style greens use a very precise mixture of soil/sandthat is different than what we have here at CLCC. USGAroot systems can be as deep as 8-12. The deeper rootsystems allow Superintendents to care differently for theirgreens than what CLCC has to do. Since we have arelatively shallow root system due to our soil composition, our care is a bit more cyclical. We tend to ramp up ourspeeds with an eye towards specific dates on thecalendar. And then back off to allow our greens to healand nourish. We also have to factor in a fair but fiscallyconservative staff budget.
Additionally, we hear the word “consistency”. “I justwant our greens to be consistent.” You can look atconsistency in many different ways, but we tend to hearthe word consistency in the manner of having greenspeeds run the same all the time. This is a challenge forthe reason explained previously, but we have workedvery hard this year and in previous years to achieve thisconsistency. We measure consistency a little different.Overall, our greens will stimp (the method of measuringgreens speeds) 9-12 throughout the week. This is not awide margin but understand where one would want thatspread tighter. But the variance of speed from thisWednesday to next Wednesday has been veryconsistent (something we measure.) Same goes fromFriday and Sunday when we measure green speeds. Soon each day of the week, our speeds have been prettyconsistent from that same day last week.
More to the comment that we hear from members thatplay on other courses and discuss their positive greenexperiences on those courses. Our course is not anexception but rather the norm, especially in the Midwest.Where are they (other courses) at in their process ofgreen care? Are they at their peak condition or are theybacking off and replenishing their greens when you playedon that particular day?
Finally and for what it is worth, I would like to give you myimpression of our greens. They run smooth without a lotof bumping and the balls continue down the line you hitthem on. With the years of sanding that Steve has done, they are also fairly receptive. I use the term fairly in thesense that they reward a good shot with a fair amount ofrelease once your shot has hit the green. And I alsobelieve they are plenty fast on the days that I get a chanceto play. I still need another putting lesson however!
18th Fairway ImprovementAlong with the 6th hole greenside pond/wall project, wewill also be moving the 18th fairway over about 15 yards atits most extreme. This will be done to route shots to theright off the tee and enhance the visual of the 18thpond/green for your second shot. The green will remainopen while this work is being done.
Our Tournament Golf season has come to a close. Even though theleaves are starting to fall and the temperatures are getting cooler, there are still several weeks of great golf left to play at CLCCbefore winter sets in.
That being said, please make sure that you keep posting yourscores for handicap purposes through October 31 for roundsplayed locally. Starting on November 1 we will no longer be postingscores played here in northern Illinois. When you go to Florida,Arizona or other locations that post year round, you must also postthese scores even though our season here is over.
On September 16th we held our inaugural Celebration ofChampions event. At that event we crowned our Men’s and LadiesChampion Golfer of the Year. Congratulations to Jeff Gindorf andJanet Priesz, our respective champion Golfer of the Year asdetermined by challenge cup points.
I would like to thank all of our members for supporting ourTournaments, Ladies Leagues, Junior Golf, TGIF Events andCaddy Program this year. We had a great season with goodparticipation at all levels.
Even though our 2016 season is barely in the rearview mirror, theGolf committee will begin the review and planning for our 2017season over the next few months.
As always your comments and questions are welcome.
