OCTOBER ANNOUNCEMENTS
David Simons
is the Featured Artist at our October 10th
General Meeting
David Simons, a self- taught artist from Tubac Arizona, has been painting for over 30 years. His oil paintings of southwest scenes, seascapes, portraits and still fife, have gained him recognition as one of the most notable artists in the Southwest.
David’s work has been published in local and national magazines such as Southwest Art, Art Talk Magazine and Arizona Highways. His artwork extends to collectors worldwide. David shares his painting experience and knowledge by hosting oil painting workshops in Tubac and Green Valley. “Oil painting for me is a meditative experience—essential to my well-being. A necessary part of my life. Painting brings me great joy. I hope it uplifts the hearts of those who view my work. I like to explore the subtle ways that light affects the subject. I also enjoy color, but the value relationships in a scene are what interest me most. I also like the emphasize the abstract nature of what surrounds us.”
President’s Letter
As we move into Fall many of our members are returning and that’s a signal of our “busy” season for SRAL. We can hardly wait to start thinking about our show season and all the excitement it brings. Before we get too excited, November is also an important month for SRAL. Our November General Meeting, which will be considered an “Official” meeting, we will be voting for the 2020 Board Members. It is VERY important that you attend the November meeting to cast your vote as we need a quorum of members to adopt the new Board. The 1st VP position is not filled at this time. If you have interest in helping out in a big way, please contact Cindy Hasse at [email protected] October is the time to think about renewing your membership. You must fill out a membership/renewal form and submit with your $35.00 which will give you the privilege of being a member from October 2019 to December 31st, 2020. Remember if you do not renew by January 1, 2020 the fee rises to $40.00! For those who have not arrived in Green Valley you may mail your membership fee and use the online membership form at https://srart.org/forms/membership_appl.php . Please use the P.O. 264, Green Valley, AZ 85622 for any written correspondence. Happy Painting to all of you! Nancy Wesorick
Important Notice!
The SRAL Studio will be closed on Monday, October 7th. GVR is installing a video projector and screen. They have asked that the Studio be closed for liability reasons while they are working. They do not want to drop things on our heads!!! The video projector will be used by Special Interest Groups after leaders have been trained on it’s use. More to come on this later.
The Oil Painters of the Art League (OPAL) Group begins its third year on
Saturday, Oct 12, from 9am ‘til noon in the main studio. The group is open to all members who have paid their dues and it’s free. The focus is on oil painting but also includes art history, current trends, experimentation, and new avenues in art. During each session there is usually some art instruction presenting oil painting techniques followed by the group applying those techniques. In addition as a group, we visit galleries to talk to the artists and gallery managers, as well as museums to keep aware of classical trends. The members are encouraged to enter SRAL art shows, such as the Old Masters Show in January -- OPAL will have it own show during March at the Canoa Ranch Social Center gallery. If you are interested in oil painting, please attend a session (even if it’s just to see what’s happening) – we meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month until April. We would love to have you join us. For more information, visit: http://www.artleague.info/opal http://www.artleague.info/opal-sessions
On Saturday, Oct 19, there will be a special session to introduce members who would like to begin using oil paints but feel like they may lack sufficient knowledge as to where to begin. This will be a simple, “introduction to oil painting” session. The meeting will be held in the Main Studio from 9am to noon. The session will cover: Best practices for using oils What to know before you begin Choosing a composition Preparing a painting palette Mixing colors Most effective color combinations 1st layer, 2nd layer, 3rd layer When do you stop? And, finishing your masterpiece

The Art League's annual Masters Show will begin in January 2020 at GVR's West Center Gallery. Reproductions of paintings created before 1940 are eligible for the show. In addition, there will be a special section highlighting works by Birger Sandzen (known as The American Van Gogh) and works by the six founding members of The Taos Society of Artists (Joseph Henry Sharp, E. Irving Couse, Oscar E. Berninghaus, W. Herbert Dunton, Ernest Blumenschein, & Bert Phillips). The Masters Show is probably one of the most popular SRAL shows because of the high quality of art completed by our members, and it is held during the busiest month for activities in the West Center.

WATERCOLOR
The Santa Rita Art League Watercolor Group meets on Friday mornings from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. We usually utilize the lighting and space in the large Media Room. However, on occasion we work in Studio A when the Media Room is used for classes or large meetings. We are a diversified group using a multitude of techniques from beginners to those who have honed their approach over the years. It is an informal fun gathering with no instruction or critiquing, although we often elect to ask for advice from fellow painters. SRAL has a wonderful section on Watercolors in it's library! Grab your watercolors and come join us! During the summer and early fall, Brian Bauman and Sharon Irish will oversee the group opening and closing the facility.
