To help raise funds to support Yates Mill, he'll be dressed up Victorian style inside the old mill. Have your picture taken with Santa for a small fee – he'll be "receiving callers" on a first-come, first-serve basis. While you wait, play some "reindeer games" and try out some old-time toys. Mill Heritage and Local History Tours October 5, 12 & 26, and November 2, 9, 23 & 30; from 2–3 pm Discover Historic Yates Mill - a place of business, community and exciting local history! Explore the inner workings of the mill itself and witness the power of water as it turns the milling machinery. For all ages; fee: $5/Adult, $4/Senior (ages 60+), $3/Child (ages 7-16), Children ages 6 & younger are free. Most appropriate for ages 7 and older. Preregistration is encouraged. Weekend Mill Tours A variety of tour types are available. All funds raised through tours go to the non-profit group Yates Mill Associates (www.yatesmill.org) and support the mill’s ongoing maintenance and operations. Saturdays at the Old Mill Tours October 4, 11 & 25, and November 1, 8, 22 & 29; between 1–3 pm Join us for a half-hour guided tour (starting at 1 pm, 1:30 pm, 2 pm, 2:30 pm or 3 pm) to view the historic mill’s main power drive and milling machinery, and explore aspects of the mill's history and preservation. For all ages; fee: $5/Adult, $4/Senior (ages 60+), $3/Child (ages 7-16), Children ages 6 & younger are free. Preregistration is encouraged. Corn Milling Demonstrations Yates Mill’s full corn grinding operation is demonstrated on the third weekend of each month from March through November and can be viewed by taking a half-hour corn grinding tour with a costumed guide. Costumed Corn Grinding Tours Saturdays, October 18 & November 15; 10 am–12 pm & 1–4 pm Sundays, October 19 & November 16; 1–4 pm It`s 1863 at Yates Mill and the yard is alive with activity! Step back in time with our 19th century costumed interpreters and watch the millstones at work grinding corn into meal. Tour fee: $5/Adult, $4/Senior (ages 60 & over), $3/Child (ages 7-16), Children ages 6 & under are free. Preregistration is encouraged. Tours are not available between 12-1 pm and the last tour of the day begins at 3:40 pm. Historic Trades Demonstrations Preregistration is not required. Stop by anytime! The Cooper Saturday, October 18; between 1-4 pm Do you know what job a cooper does? This trade goes back centuries and has remained almost unchanged. Coopers make barrels, casks, and buckets. The Tupperware of their day, these wooden containers held flour, gunpowder, beer, distilled beverages, and much more. Take the barrel bean bag toss challenge and learn more about this interesting historic trade. Clothiers, Mercers and Haberdashers Saturday, November 15; between 1-4 pm The haberdashery shop is open! Come out anytime between 1-4 PM to explore several historic textile related trades. Learn how these jobs evolved over time and play some games to see if you can distinguish between the traditional roles of clothiers, mercers and haberdashers. Also find out if these jobs are still around today! Yates Mill merchandise is for sale during the corn grinding weekends, while stone-ground cornmeal and mill postcards are available daily 8:30 am to 5 pm in the visitor center. Organized groups and schools can explore the mill’s history and operations by participating in a guided mill tour and other hands-on park programs such as pond studies, nature hikes and more. Weekday Mill Tours & School Programs Tip Top to Bottom Mill Technology Tour Saturday, October 25; 10 am–12 pm Opportunities to explore all 4 levels of the mill don’t happen often! Learn the history of milling in NC, test your mill trivia, and discover what interesting machinery is preserved throughout the old mill. Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs! For ages 10 & up (most appropriate for ages 14 & older); fee: $10/Adult, $8/Senior (ages 60+) and $6/Child (ages 10-16). Preregistration is required.
