The next training will be on Sunday 7 at 9am after the radio sched. Also a reminder to all, that this day is a very special day for motoring enthusiasts - the Bathurst 1000. Just saying that is all…LOL. New prospective members are welcome to come along and see what we do. The brigade attended three fire calls for the month; two small rubbish fires and a wash-away after a motor vehicle collision, all supporting Maude and Balliang Fire Brigades. With summer approaching fast, some councils around Victoria are bringing in ‘fire restrictions’ early. This is due to the dryness of fuel loading and lack of rain in some areas. Some parts of the state have already seen some surprising fire activity, which have caught members of brigades and the
public unaware. So now is the time, if not already, start cleaning up around your rural property NOW. Please make sure that “IF” the time arises, the CFA can get fire trucks into your property. We need at least a 3 metre clearance around the driveway to enter your property and be able to turn around at the end.
SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES – Check Your Smoke
Detectors Are In Working Order You can follow the brigade on Facebook “Anakie Fire Brigade”. You can also follow CFA & SES activity on the web site https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/ Fires can happen at ALL times of the year, in all environments,
so be prepared, be safe and have a fire plan

Health News & More... Shingles: (herpes zoster) is a re-activation of the chicken pox virus. Most people over 40 years of age have had chicken pox, after which the virus remains dormant in the cerebro-spinal fluid of the body. A lowered or compromised immune system may re-activate the virus and cause shingles. Shingles can occur at any age but more commonly in people over 50. Symptoms: burning tingling sensations with a red welt-like rash; after 2-3 days blistering occurs accompanied by severe stabbing pain, skin sensitivity, fever, fatigue, itching & headache. Shingles commonly occur on the torso, chest, pelvis or face and on a single side. Until the blisters crust over individuals are contagious. During the condition’s course it is wise to keep away from vulnerable individuals: young children, elderly and those with chronic medical conditions. Treatment: visit your GP immediately you suspect Shingles as anti-viral medication may reduce symptoms and shorten the length of infection. Otherwise treatment is symptomatic: pain relief, rest, lots of fluids. Complications: scarring, long term pain and skin sensitivity. If shingles occurs in the eyes there may be serious vision complications. Vaccination: Zostavax is available free to those aged 71 to 79 (only until the end of 2018) - it can be purchased privately. The ideal age for the vaccine is 60+. E: [email protected] Ph: 0425 731 295 Be well & create your happiness..!!

Gardening working bee
The community house has a
lovely garden, right in the centre of town. The weeds, however are thriving in this warm weather, and a general tidy-up is needed. Can you spare an hour to help with this annual task? If so, join us on Thursday 11 at 11am.
Let’s cook! A hands-on cooking session, where you take a meal home. Monday 15 @ 2pm. Cost: $2, with some ingredients and an electric frypan to bring. And the meal? A surprise package! Ring for details.
Swap stuff! This is the time of year when there can be excess home-grown veges, fruit, eggs or plants. You may have had a spring-clean and found some unopened items or new clothes never worn. Here is a chance to gift them to a new owner and, in the process, find something you can use. Thursday 18 any time between 9am and 4pm. If interested, come at 1pm to see a short video - The Story of Stuff.

Turkish Bride Soup (vegetarian)
¼ cup butter 2 onions 1 teaspoon paprika 1 cup red lentils ½ cup fine Bulguv 2 tablespoons tomato paste 8 cups vegetable stock 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon mint leaves 4 slices lemon ½ teaspoon chopped, dried mint
Melt butter, cook onions until golden brown, stir in the paprika, lentils and bulguv. Add tomato paste, vegetable stock and cayenne pepper. Bring to the boil and cook until soft and creamy (about 1 hour). Crumble dried mint leaves, add to soup and stir. Remove from heat. Garnish with lemon and mint.

Wanted: people to buy local, because our farmers need us to. Your local spend boosts the local economy. Research shows that for every $1 spent at a small regional business provides a boost to the local economy. It’s the ethical thing to do - you can choose not to buy out-of-season vegetables and fruit from overseas and purchase what’s in season from local producers. You can help support local communities - whether it’s at the local general store or a little cafe; your spend helps support local community groups. Without local business, local communities don’t survive either. You might pick up something special or learn something new! There are so many clever and creative people in rural areas - artists, designers, food producers and growers - you might find something completely different and unique to the area - we all know the joy of finding something new!
Want to join us? New members are welcome. Contact Felicity Bolitho on 0427 835 706 if you’d like to attend a meeting.
