Year 6 Open Evening The Year 6 open evening is one of the highlights of the History Department, where not only do we get the opportunity to
show off what our department does, but also to imagine ourselves to be in a diff erent part of History for one night. This
year, we travelled back to 1920s America, which is also part of our controlled assessment unit in Year 9 as well as one of our
Year 9 study Units. As you can see we had a 'swell me'!
The Chess Club connues on WEDNESDAYS, 3.15‐4.15pm in the library, and it has been great to see many new Year 7
students become involved in chess since they joined English Martyrs School in September. The new chess clocks are allowing games to be completed more rapidly and this adds a lile more excitement to games. Players may well be leading in some
games, but may lose on me instead! Don’t forget that chess sets and boards are always available from the librarians
throughout the week, so why not have a game before school starts, at lunchmes, or aer school if you can’t make
Wednesdays?
We are currently trying to arrange a SPEED CHESS TOURNAMENT (with
prizes) in the run up to Christmas, to take place one aernoon in school
me. Places will be limited, but if you are interested you can always
contact Mr Edwards in advance of the formal announcement. More
details will follow soon.
Finally, a number of complete beginners have come to Chess Club to
learn about the game. To help these ‐and others who might be a lile unsure about geng involved in chess as a hobby – we will be
producing a short guide to chess, outlining the basic moves and a few
basic ideas on strategy, hints, ps etc. Once you know the value of the
pieces and how they move – then it’s just pracce and experience (even
if you inially lose more than you win!) and you’ll soon find yourself
Naonals Netball The U14, 16 and 19 teams competed in the county round of the Naonal School Compeon with some outstanding results.
The U14 team held off tough compeon to become Cleveland County Champions beang schools such as Yarm, Red House
and Barnard Castle. The U16’s were runners up in their secon playing some fantasc netball and included some brand new
players into their squad who contributed well throughout the tournament. Finally the U19’s came 3rd narrowly missing out
on a trip to the next round of the compeon. The U16 and U14 teams have now qualified and will progress to the North
East Round of the compeon in January where they will face the best school teams in the North East. Congratulaons to all and good luck in the next round.
talented, professional and specialist staff , speak to our current students and

Alton Towers Sixth Form Trip
63 Sixth Form students and 5 staff enjoyed a fantasc day out at Alton Towers Theme Park in Staff ordshire. The day was aimed at bringing the Sixth Form
together. A very early start was required but everyone seemed to enjoy the
various rides and aracons the theme park has to off er. Mr Roberts did not
appreciate the many horror based acvies as our visit coincided with the start of
‘Scarefest’. This trip is just another example of the fantasc extra curricular
acvies we off er at EMS6! Who is coming on the trip next year?!
European Day of Languages The European Day of Languages is celebrated every year on 26
th September. To
mark the event this year all Year 7 classes learnt a song in a foreign language and
then performed it to the rest of the year group. There was a fabulous range of
songs in French, German and Spanish and some budding musical and linguisc
stars! The winning class was 7U1A with their song ‘as‐tu un animal?’ and the
runners up with their tuneful rendion of ‘allouee’ were 7X2A.
On Thursday 25th September, ten year 8 Students, selected for their hard work and enthusiasm in language lessons, took part in a celebraon day for the European Day of Languages at St John’s School and Sixth Form College, Bishop Auckland. On
arrival, they were served with fresh croissants and hot chocolate and the event was kick‐started with a performance by the
amazing Pearl of Africa Youth choir. Throughout the day, students completed workshops in French, Modern Greek, Japanese
and Hindi. An excellent day was had by all and each one of the students conducted themselves brilliantly! Special
congratulaons go to Joshua Cain who won a prize for his contribuon to the day’s acvies.
